      The cemetery and crematorium were operated as a commercial concern until the 1990s, but their income had dropped significantly. When first built in the 1920s, Arno's Vale was the first crematorium in the south west of England, but between 1956 and 1961 (if I remember correctly) Bristol city council had opened two municipal crematoria of more modern design, in competition. With decreasing income, as burials became less common and the cremations taking place elsewhere, the owners were no longer to maintain their grounds, which became overgrown, their buildings which fell into disrepair, and their crematory equipment became unreliable. To try to keep the grounds under control, they brought in a lot of young people on a government scheme which provided cheap labour in exchange for training, and sent them out to cut down the tree growth; however, all this did was coppice the trees, which grew back even more in subsequent years. In the end, the lack of money meant that the owners could not update the crematorium to meet modern emissions standards, and they lost their operating licence in the late 1990s. The owner then proposed a scheme to clear the graveyard and sell the land for housing development, but this caused a public outcry, and in the end the cemetery was bought by the council, then passed to a charitable trust. The trust has done brilliant work, but their task is huge. Most of the buildings, semi-derelict by the time they took over, have been restored to a high standard, and are used for weddings and as a visitor destination. The grounds are tidier and safer than they were twenty years ago.

      @@SerenitySueGraveyards yes, a shame they are covered up and lost. However, here in Michigan, we have a few *green* burial cemeteries and they are meant to be that way which is a fairly new trend here. No embalming. Only biodegradable caskets or shrouds allowed, and no head stones, GPS is used to locate your loved ones burial plot, i believe. I've seen one that's a woodland setting and another that is an open prairie with beautiful settings. Do you have these types of cemeteries in Ireland?

    This is a very beautiful cemetery. I love the old headstones and monuments. I am surprised that the inscriptions on some of these old monuments are still legible. The overgrowth is the worst I have seen
    in a long time. I would Imagine that this cemetery has a small grounds crew, and relies heavily on volunteers. It would probably take
    an entire Army division, armed with
    weed trimmers, clippers, chain saws
    and trucks to really clean the cemetery up. It is probably a safe assumption, that the families of many of those interred here have all passed away, and there is no one to visit these graves anymore. Thank you very much for a great video Sue,
    It was very enjoyable.

    What an amazing Cemetery. I rather like this type of cemetery it’s the ones in places that have not been cur !when it belonged to a church once. That is so wrong. Even if the church is no longer in use those graves are still on their land. . Churches have done this time and time again .They are not that poor that they cannot respect their graveyards. But this one is beautiful,I love how the trees are so well developed it’s like walking in the woods.It’s peaceful and relaxing and a nice place to go for walks. The Victorians and possibly before would go and have picnics with their loved ones and make an afternoon of it. Especially in cities and bigger towns where there was not much greenery to go to like parks or Arboretum’s so it was a good day out for them..Thank you Sue for the beautiful walk around,I thoroughly enjoyed it ..Love n Light to you both 🥰

    There's a story attached to the coffin lift in the crematorium (45'15"). The chap who worked it was very deaf, and didn't realise what a tremendous lot of noise it made in operation. My wife bears this out: she attended a cremation there in the 1970s, when it was still a busy facility, and she said that there was a great deal of clanging and clattering when the lift lowered the coffin from the chapel.

    As a german I always love to see British/Irish cemeteries. Most of our old ones sadly don't have most of their original graves anymore. The Blackberry shrubs are a problem everywhere, if you don't poison them they grow back like hair over and over again. But you can't poison them with all the other little shrubbery and those gorgeous trees around.

    • @SerenitySueGraveyards
      @SerenitySueGraveyards  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I guess that all the wild plants add to the ambiance of the place and all of the graves you've looked at are at least 100 years old so it adds also to the age of the place and it's cool that way
