In 1497 John Cabot sailed west in his ship, The Matthew, to search for a new trade route to the riches of The East. His famous voyage led him to Bonavista, Newfoundland and the discovery of North America.
500 years later in 2007, Bristolians wanted to mark the historic achievement - but how should they celebrate? This film tells the story behind building the replica Matthew ship and the historic voyage.
    Stunning photography captures:-
    - The planning and construction of John Cabot's Matthew
    - The excitement of the launch
    - The colour and spirit of The Festival of the Sea
    - The exuberance and pride as The Matthew departs
    - The tremendous welcome in North America for the Newfoundland 500 years celebrations
Key questions are answered by The Matthew ship designer, project manager and project chairman:-
    - Whose idea was the reconstruction?
    - How do you design a 500 year old ship?
    - How accurate is the replica?
    - What is the future of The Matthew?
Skipper, David Alan-Williams and his crew discuss the challenges of the voyage ahead during preparations on the eve of departure.
Members of the crew provide a fascinating insight into their voyage of a lifetime.

I was born in Bonavista, Cape Bonavista in Bonavista Bay, in Newfoundland, Canada where John Cabot discovered North America with the Matthew in 1497. They also later built another replica of this boat and its in Bonavista.
