SEIJI OZAWA
Born in Shenyang, China (then Mukden, Manchuria) in 1935, Ozawa studied conducting at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo in the 1950’s under Hideo Saito (1902-74). In 1959, he placed first in the International Besançon Competition for Young Conductors. After apprenticing under the tutelage of Herbert von Karajan (1908-89), he went on to serve as assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Leonard Bernstein (1918-90). Thereafter, he successively served as musical director for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), among others. Since 1992 Ozawa has led the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto, which was renamed the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival in 2015. He has also been avidly instructing budding musicians at such places as the Seiji Ozawa Ongaku-juku. In 2011, he won the 23rd Praemium Imperiale in Honor of Prince Takamatsu, a global arts prize awarded annually by the Japan Art Association. In 2015, he became the first-ever Japanese recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors award in the United States. In 2016, his recording of Ravel’s L’Enfant et Les Sortileges (“The Child and the Spells”), with the Saito Kinen Orchestra under his direction, won the Grammy award for best opera recording. Also, he was awarded honorary membership of the Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) in 2010, and of the Berliner Philharmoniker (Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra) in 2015. In 2013, he became the new director general of Art Tower Mito (ATM), succeeding Hidekazu Yoshida (1913-2012), the first person to hold that position.

For me this movement is the embodiment of "faith in humanity restored." To think Beethoven was physically in the pits of suffering and despair, yet still produced this piece of utmost hope, overcoming, and triumph. The amount of passion and faith he must've had within him. Thank you Ozawa-san, for bringing this magnificent piece to life and imbuing it with grace and vitality.
RIP Maestro Seiji Ozawa, September 1, 1935 - February 6, 2024
Spent my first decade of life in love with Seiji-san's musical skill. My father was lucky enough to sing under his conducting with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I still think he was the best conductor the BSO ever had.
For some reason I found this recording and have been playing it all week along with other Ozawa recordings. I was young in the 1960s and 70s when Ozawa was director of the Ravinia Festival near where I grew up. Ravinia was the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The extent to which the Maestro introduced me to so much of classical music at Ravinia has surprised me in retrospect and I've been reliving my experience of him this week and feeling immense gratitude. About 30 minutes ago I found out that he passed away 6 days ago, about the time I began thinking of him so intensely. I feel like a family member has left my world. Rest in peace, Maestro, You were loved and most deeply respected. Thank you for giving me music.
❤
Seiji Ozawa was a name I could count on when I lived in a time of civil society.
RIP SEIJI (2/13/24) This is my favorite Symphony score!! Our high school band played it for our schools Madrigal Choir concerts This version brought tears to my eyes. 😢
When a soul enters the gates of Heaven, there is absolute quiet, not a note heard but there is heavenly music all throughout he eternal realm praising and glorifying God from eternity to eternity. 🕊️ 🙏🕊️🙏
I was listening to this when I found out that Seiji Ozawa died days ago. I was in tears especially he was the one he has done Beethoven's 9th (for me) as perfect as it is.
Rest in peace, maestro.
Ozawa is Japan's leading conductor and has made great achievements around the world.
my pride
Burst into tears of gratitude and admiration after the last note. How I love(d) watching Seiji conduct. Such a passion and pure living embodiment of the music. And his deep appreciation and honoring of the musicians and vocalists so apparent. What a blessing he was to us; what a privilege to have shared the same lifetime.
The passing of Seiji Ozawa marks a significant loss to the world of classical music. His contributions are indelibly etched in the annals of musical excellence. As one reflects upon his vast discography, it becomes evident that each recording encapsulates a profound artistic vision. These performances, resplendent with emotional depth and technical mastery, stand as enduring tributes to his extraordinary virtuosity. The rarity of such a confluence of talent and charisma underscores the magnitude of this bereavement. Yet, through these recordings, Seiji Ozawa's legacy will continue to inspire and resonate with future generations.
How small the world is. Another inappropriate comment. What are you really looking for a balance of power with narcissistic words. That's well what I saw in you during the exchanges. My musical knowledge will always be greater than yours because you have a lot to learn in the way of writing musically. On this subject, no one appreciated your redaction (Carl Nielsen). What do you want, the natural selection does in sort that there is leaders and followers. As God is beneficent ! Why delete your comments since you constantly seek to demean the debate, not musical but that of others in the occurrence my person. I forbid you to call me a coward because it demonstrates your nature short of arguments. You are egocentric and sociopath: Coward yourself ! The formula 'Polemic is the puissance of the powerless' sticks well to you. By learning music we understand human nature better. You'll learn it the hard way sooner or later. People like you have no place serving music. *Lucien*
Here is our hearts singing to you.
I am also very saddened our marvellous friend & most conscientious conductor has passed on, as he had become a special person whom many of us music loversoved so much.We hope he rests in peace.Amen.
Such a passionate performance. You Van see this is really personal to maestro, and everyone picks it up.
Gracias maestro. 🙏🌿💮
All this genius applied to something not war and ugliness! 😌👏👏👏

Thank you, that was fantastic.🎶❤
Did really watch so many vids of greats conduct this, but somehow this is more piercing then the rest - cleanness and pristine of sound is beyond heavens , or it could simply be me at this point in time after the sad news tat Maestro is no more... RIP dear sir.
Bravo!!! Seiji
Gracias Maestro, tu Música vivirá siempre. 09/02/2024
Amen!!
The greatest conductors (like Seiji) can do so little and get both the most detail and the most joy out of music! Killer performance! Gassho
Absolute perfection.
By far the greatest piece of music ever written and this is a superb rendition thereof.
When those four heavenly voices come in at 8:45 it is transcendent.
Gorgeous
- R.I.P Grande Maestro Seiji Ozawa!!!
Wonderful voice !

Seiji is Legend!❤❤❤
I have lost a precious person. I am grateful to those who will preserve Mr. Ozawa for a new era.
It is perfection. Like Beethoven actually came to play for me.
I'm in Venezuela and I say that.... This concert is really really really AMAZING 😍🤩🤩🤩🤩
RIP
RIP maestro
SUBLIME! MAGISTRAL! GLORIOSO!
95* wasn’t it??
I resonated with what you said about liveliness of voice! I thought the tenor did a terrific job of conveying lightness and joy! Not all caught up in the somber Beethoven mythos!
What video were you watching? Ozawa rarely used a baton, and he didn't here.
Quelle merveille !
RIP . ❤
... tears kept filling my eyes...

It is easy to see/hear why this is regarded as the greatest piece in the classical music repertoire.
R.I.P. Ozawa-san, we dedicate this selection to his loving memory.

Gorgeous! Great Maestro! What year is this recording from? Thank you so much.
Magnifique! Grand Maestro! De quelle année cette enregistrement ? Merci beaucoup.
Your welcome! Concert held on 2017
