I'd like to share one of the scariest afternoons of my life so far. I had a large shark come up and give my kayak a whack while fishing off the Sunshine coast in Queensland Australia. My kayak is much smaller than this one and probably not built for offshore fishing but I was young and didn't really care at the time. I headed for the nearest place I could safely get to shore which was about 2.5km around the steep headland and the shark was never more than 5 or 6 metres from me the whole way. When I rounded the headland the swell had kicked right up after the tide change so I battled through big choppy swell for the last kilometre or so, at times so much water was breaking on me that the kayak was 90% underwater as it couldn't drain out fast enough. I'm sure you can guess how that feels with a 3.5 - 4m shark a few metres under me. Visibility wasn't great that day so I never got a real good look at what type of shark it was but I'm pretty sure I could see stripes the first time I saw it after it hit the kayak, so I think it was a tiger. It almost flipped me when it hit but there were no teeth marks so it just hit me with it's nose behind where I sat. The jolt was so hard that it knocked one rod out of the holder and it sunk to the bottom. The other rod was still trailing out the back with a pilchard on it the whole way, both times I stopped paddling to reel it in the shark moved right in close so I decided to leave it. The last 500m was awful, I was in pretty close to the rocks where the swell was the worst but I was hoping to find a spot to get out. But it was all steep sharp rocks with waves breaking on them so I had to push on basically paddling with the whole rear of the kayak including myself underwater up to the waist. The fucking shark never moved away at all and followed right until the kayak touched the shore and I clambered up onto the rocky bit where I launched.
Glad you’re safe! Although it just kind of sounds like the shark was just trying to get your fish/bait or hope you’d throw out chum, more than actively trying to attack you! Must’ve booped its head on accident
@@monikakalinowska3499 generally I think animal biopsy are adorable. But if a shark decided to boop me or my boat I'd probably have a heart attack haha
The point where your kayak began filling up with water must have been terrifying. I thought sharks would leave a kayak alone! Thank God that you safely made it. My next day’s paper would read: “Kayak for Sale”!
❤️right on Adam would have appreciated that. He’s almost passed a year now. My brother, being I never had one. If you met him, and maybe you did he would be your friend for life. God I miss him. When you feel the world shift to happy I know he’s helping Take care
I have the same ability as an Octopus under stress, while in the water, around aggressive sharks, I can create a huge brown cloud and quickly disappear!
@marcus24000 yes, because we aren't ruthless warriors who have probably trained their entire lives in the art of combat and have learnt not to fear any dangers
@marcus24000 That's a little too simple in the case of a shark... There's an evolutionary basis for that fear. It's even inherently creepy to swim in deep water where you just can't see the bottom and I bet these fears were also common for our ancestors.
About 12 years ago, I was kayaking about a half mile off the Gulf Coast and saw a huge "volkswagon beetle looking thing with a reptile head" surface nearby. Anything you see from a kayak offshore can be frightening. Turns out I was running from a sea turtle 😁.
@marcus24000 he was in no harm, are you serious? Abusing the shark? You sir, seem to have zero survival instinct, and no sense of danger. Do you also try to pet and feed wild animals?
You know you live in a place filled with stupid people when a person need to explain himself in a situation like this. Mate, you did an amazing job ! Defended yourself as he was probably defending his territory or whatever. Don’t listen to any criticism. It’s just plain ignorance!
If he didn’t keep hitting it then it probably would have left him alone. The most it probably would have done was bite the kayak and figured out it wasn’t food then left.
Looks like paddles could do with a small spear tip at the end of the paddle blade...not enough to kill with one hit, just enough to fuck up such a shark to make it go away quickly.
That was just a juvenile shark, though still dangerous. That is why the attention he paid to you, was a juvenile who was curious, an adult would not have wasted so much energy. Great video and way to keep cool
Hey bud, as a ocean kayaker myself you handled the situation fine. Don’t let trolls behind keyboards bother you as most of people are too 🐱 to go out in the ocean on a kayak by themselves.

I'm really amazed! I've always been under the impression you can give a shark a good poke with something and it will take off because you are not their normal food. But you tagged it pretty hard several times and it chased you a mile to kick you out of his pool!
Yeah he surprisingly seemed really chill for being whacked? He didn’t approach too aggressively either and if that shark wanted to try and attack it would’ve made it’s move
@@FlowceanSoul Absolutely right. That shark could have dumped him in the ocean anytime he wanted to. The vast majority of sharks want nothing to do with us, which is why attacks are so rare. And when they do interact with us, it's almost always out of curiosity or mistaken identity. Most people swimming off Cape Cod or the southeast coast of Florida or the other hot spots don't realize how often they're sharing the immediate vicinity with sharks -- sometimes within 100 yards or less. The fact that they almost never make themselves known -- let alone attack us -- shows how they'd rather steer clear of us 99% of the time.
@@RMR1 Exactly! There’s a channel on here called TheMalibuArtist and they do drone footage of sharks, it’s SO interesting to see just how many sharks are just hanging out around us or coming over to check us out and just swimming away. He even filmed an incident where a surfer paddled RIGHT over a shark, looks like he even touched it, and the shark just kept going on with his business.

Thats dangerous because you will never be as fast as a shark. You gotta hit them to let them know you are defensive. Not something that flees like prey. Natural selection decided that you have a high chance to die when in danger by your own actions.

Dang that's scary!! Glad you made it to shore
Glad you’re safe! Although it just kind of sounds like the shark was just trying to get your fish/bait or hope you’d throw out chum, more than actively trying to attack you! Must’ve booped its head on accident

@marcus24000 yes, because we aren't ruthless warriors who have probably trained their entire lives in the art of combat and have learnt not to fear any dangers
I'd pay a lot of money to swim with sharks..

Being afraid to take a kayak out that far in the ocean is called common sense.
@@whiskers4me Common sense for people not living their lives and dying with regrets. I’d rather live the way I want to live my life as there are millions of ways to die and I’d rather be happy outside doing something I love rather staying safe and live a boring life.
@@KL-gu7kc You do make a good point. But not everyone is brave or adventurous enough to try some of these things. And some people are happy to live a bland life. To each his own.
@@KL-gu7kc Also it really depends on where ya are. I'd definitely be afraid to go kayak out in the ocean because I've never really spent any amount of time living near a coast. I'm not too familiar with either kayaking or the sea to be frank. Just as I'm sure plenty folks would be afraid to go hunting or hiking around here because of bears or cougars, but you learn your environment don't ya know? Doesn't mean I'm not living my life.
well you've just confirmed my fear of the ocean..He was persistent. Glad you're okay.
I'm really amazed! I've always been under the impression you can give a shark a good poke with something and it will take off because you are not their normal food. But you tagged it pretty hard several times and it chased you a mile to kick you out of his pool!
I think the shark was really, really hungry

He kept paddling. But, never seemed to be getting any closer to the beach. Almost like spinning your tires on the street.
He was pretty far out tbf, doesn’t really look like it but he was
What's padding?
That goes to show how far out he was. Being in a kayak I'll bet he was actually moving pretty fast. He was very lucky.
Current and tide
Like one of those dream where you are running as fast as you van and getting nowhere
The shark seemed more curious than anything. He certainly didn't seem fazed by the paddle whacks.
It’s crazy how easily they can just go by invisible to us even when they’re literally right under our noses! He even filmed an incident where a surfer paddled RIGHT over a shark, looks like he even touched it, and the shark just kept going on with his business.
He's lucky it was a small one.

+molon labe Yea we rode our Kawasaki 3 seater wave runner's there time to time if we didnt feel like trailing them too far. And have seen some hammerheads there. But the last time we rode there we had a run in with a 10foot bull shark who like to bunk into the side of the ski and circle us just off the Hula Bay Club islands there. He was relentless and persistent. He scared the crap out of us. That day i can say we were glad we had the turbo skis to high tail it out of there and back to picnic island and not ride there again..Took a year to get the wife back on the skis somewhere else.. That channel by the Gandy bridge is deep and no joke...Sharks come in there to breed certain times the year. How Kayakers fish out there is nut's.
