14:42 thats the same train from the Quanah cam a couple days ago on the last grab bag Must of went off the Red River Valley Subdivision onto the Transcon
great grab bag. I really liked being able to see the Repair In Place for that traction motor on the engine. Also, I didn't know you put a camera in my backyard (Norwalk, CT). The split where either go to Pnn Station or start the third rail going to Grand Central.
Does VRF have a system by which to contact the railroad when it sees something such as a locomotive on fire?? It used to be that there was a reward for reporting things such as this that could cause major accidents and disruptions (where the train could be stopped and the problem stopped ... before it became an accident and/or disruption).
14:05: Is that blue No.309 unit behind the two lead locos a dumb power unit or what? Just never seen one before that small. In the UK we had "cow & calf" units which were just a second loco permanantly attached with the cab and control gear removed but otherwise a normal loco. Just not seen these before...
I'm still kind of new to watching this awesome channel, so I was wondering if one of you Railfans could tell me what was going on at 12:25 +/- with the smoking/burning NS locomotive? I have seen similar in a previous video and am not sure if this is a catastrophic engine failure or something else? I'm sure the engineer is aware of this through instrumentation, and/or seeing the smoke on long curves. Is there a fire suppression system on each locomotive? Thank you in advance for answering 👍
Most likely a turbo on the engine is bad and letting oil in to the exhaust system or a seal somewhere else letting oil in. I'm not sure if the engineer can see it or not but it should run fine until a safe spot to shut it down then they can free-wheel (like a train car) it to a repair shop.
This may be a strange question but I've always wondered how fast one of those engines can actually go top speed but I'm sure they wouldn't want to risk trying it could derail
most freight locomotives are rated about 65-70mph. some mainline speeds are up to 50 for freight, but usually have long curves or superelevation. Amtrak's diesels can hit 110-120mph (hence designation AMD-110 for the P42)
Derailing isn't actually the biggest concern with engine top speed, unless you're doing your speed test on windy track. It mostly has to do with how the traction motors are geared. The most common gear ratios on freight power have an absolute maximum speed of 70-75 before damage is caused to the motors. Most locomotives (especially newer ones) have overspeed protections to prevent that speed being exceeded. Passenger power can get up to over 100, but the gear ratio means pulling power is considerably reduced. On the other end of the scale, DMIR had their locomotives geared for sheer pulling power to haul iron ore, but the maximum speed of those engines was 50 (or you'd trash the motors). That wasn't a problem on home rails, and even other roads liked the pulling power when they were leased out during lulls in ore traffic
cams that dont handle the dark well don't deserve VR Grab Bag status. I find them difficult sometimes to see anything but blur and pixelization. Sry, I love the grab bags, but there should be better quality cams at night.
Always love seeing the "Rocky Mountaineer" cool name and cooler paint scheme!
That paint design on the Rocky Mountaineer is just awesome.
yes
Glad to see the LaPlata friction fire from yesterday and today’s engine lift ‘repair’ made it in the grab bag. Thanks! Always a treasure.
A whole. lotta. power. that's. clean
Was watching the serious exhaust
problem. Fire could be the next stop
for that one. if they don't get serviced
was on duty when that fire happened…pretty cool that we were able to use the VRF cam to see which motor it was and the seriousness of the problem.
See! We _are_ useful!
Absolutely love your grab bags!! Thank you!

Just RailFantastic....Awesome people , Nature and human injinuity...
Great Grab Bag....🌴👍😎🌴
Cool vid of the Owl !
12:40 I see NS units are trying to pretend they are Steam Locomotives again.
Hearing distant signal say the sponsor made me smile.
I recognize that voice anywhere at the beginning of the video. It's distant signal!

Red River Valley Sub, Boise Sub, Dalhart Sub, Plainview Sub, and the Transcon all converge in Amarillo, TX. There needs to be a cam in Amarillo.
@@jayvanbebber5656 i agree! Amarillo is a busy hub, idk why they dont have one there
Amarillo would be a great spot for cams.

Awesome Grab Bag as always VRF
Were those the dulcid tones of Danny Harmon, Distant signal on the lead in?

Awesome grab bag thanks
Michael my friend! How's your day today??

How could everyone know every time of another great grab bag!

Was that Distant Signal’s voice at the sponsor?
Yup
Do Engineers wave at each other as they pass and is there competition on who pulls the longest or heaviest train?
I was actually in Galesburg during the time of this grab bag.
Nice
Time for everyine to stay home and watch couple of came during weekend
I wonder if the train crew uses your live camera feed to inspect the train while they are passing the camera.
Maybe, but I'd think they'd get in trouble for being on their phones.
The smoke in Revelstoke is really thick. Looks live the whole province is on fire.

It’s a slug it just has traction motors and a lot of weight in it. It gets its power from the switcher it’s connected to.
Plz reply I Love These GB Keep Up The Great Work
Anyone know where that Belt Railway of Chicago slug is heading towards?
I got my first Athearn Genesis loco today.

Lots of action!
Ns's horns really stand out
I often wonder about the motorists in La Grange as they so seem to fear the trains yet one false move could cause absolute carnage. 🤓 🤓 🏍️ 💙 💙
If they "fear the trains" then why don't they haul a$$ when they're in the way???
