Christopher Priest's run on the Black Panther was not that bad when I read it. I think I got a copy of the TPB stashed away somewhere. It was the first Black Panther comic I read and I was in high school. Didn't read many of the issues on Huddlin's run. I was reading DC and indie comics during that time. I will have to read the Huddlin' run.

He's already been through this when he lost vibranium after the Doom War and redeemed himself when he discovered that going back in time, to his ancestors to find vibranium in the universe, which became the foundation of the Wakandan Galactic Empire.
Something I've said for sometime now is that Black writers cannot write Black characters. Black Panther written by Jonathan Hickman, Russos>>>>>>>Black Panther written by John Ridley, Coogler, Coates.
I don’t think the race of the writer is really the problem. The problem is the agenda being pushed. Most of the black writers you mentioned are from the modern age of comics. And we all know how trash it is.
@@bigevil1001 Jonathan Hickman, and even we can throw in Jason Aaron are from the modern era of comics and they had a significantly better portrayal of T'Challa than the Black writers listed did. David Liss also had a better BP run than them. Sure the race is not relevant to a writer's talent but it is a pattern I think that needs to be acknowledged.
@@sjbrigante4845 In the case of Jason Aaron's Black panther being one of the few redeemable things from an otherwise very mediocre Avengers run imo Outside of the other Avengers I feel like he was the only one that wrote both Black panther and Captain Marvel well as characters Unfortunately the same cannot be said for how he wrote She-Hulk, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man.
I've said that there is so much hate towards T'Challa these days. Like even the Coogler films nerfed the man, and now the comics have the whole kingdom hating on the man in every arc, starting with that Coates horrible run. What is the issue, like honestly? Actually its almost similar to the damage they have been doing to Batman. These people are ruining iconic characters like they aren't making money off them. I don't get the self sabotage.
The reason for the grey skin is the combination of digital recoloring for rereleases AND the limited color palette of the 60s. This went for all black characters back then such as Bill Foster.
Blade - basically sideline by his owb daughter and put in a very mediocre Avengers comic by Jason Arron Bishop - what was even the point of turning an evil not once but twice Blue Marvel - why hasn't he been made leader of a main Avengers team since ultimates Luke Cage - where has the character been since that unnecessary melodrama between him and Jessica that made it seem like the two were going through a divorce Falcon - I put some of the blame on the writing teams that they get for the 616 Captain America comics, all of them are copy & paste Ed Brubaker's Captain America comics.
@NaquanGreen-zt4gr blade hasn't had anything since the 2010s and had been on hiatus with solo titles in-between his black spliotation 60s appearance to the motorcycle fetish S curl leather jacket light skin phase to the carbon copy Wesley snipes & sticky fingers era and he's only a side guest character like helping out vampire jubilee and wolverine but other than that the character has been sidelined by a made up daughter character when for the longest he's been single and a loner he has no development.
@NaquanGreen-zt4gr yeah bishop and shard in those comics gets the shaft it's like he's just there to be the token angry black man on the team he has no solo villains or character arch like wolverine has the weapon x alpha flight sabertooth department k the summers gets to have family and children and marrital affairs and be the choosen ones of all mutantdum gambit gets to have a whole solo series with a cajun thieves and assassins guild was integral nuances with the mutant massacre gets married to rogue, rogue mystique nightcrawler graden creed azael and Sabertooth all gets development together as a pseudo surrogate family magneto and charles Xavier he's just there to be an antagonist to cable and hope summers or to accuse people of commitng crimes before they happen like a time cop what does bishop have other than that ?
@NaquanGreen-zt4gr yeah they straight up cucked Luke cage and upstage him with his white wife Jessica Jones they dont know what to do with blue marvel they could either make him a magneto type character or just a boring o.p. character with no rogues and solo stories to tell with him.
@@tyronleung5276 Wasn't it revealed in one of Jessica Jones last comic runs that her daughter had purple skin? I don't know the whole story but I think the whole thing was meant to reveal that Jessica under the influence and control of the purple man was SA by him and as a result of the unprotected EX messed with her DNA. Resulting in her and Luke's daughter to have purple skin similar to that of the purple man Don't know if that makes Luke Cage a cuckold since the whole thing between purple man and Jessica was due to the effects of mind control/manipulation and nothing that Jessica would do willingly.
The one thing that you’re missing is that the first half of Coates run was actually selling well. I believe issue #1 sold damn near 500000 copies. And I personally love the first half of Coates run, the second half where he’s in space…. Not so much lol
I never said that it didn’t sale well. I literally said in the video that although his comics weren’t really looked at as great, they still were pretty successful. There was a lot of hype going on around black panther because he appeared in the civil war movie, and later got his own movie, so I think that’s why so many people were reading Coates’ run, because it was easily accessible
I think it was about 300K for the first issue and the sales dropped after the first 4-6 issues and then spikes for variants, legacy number relaunch and a second new 1 and ten immediately tapered off. It was selling a little over 20K by the end. World of Wakanda was cancelled by issue 6 and The Crew was cancelled by the time issue 2 came out and went to issue 6. The only good books in that period was Rise of the Black Panther and the Killmonger miniseres
The only GOOD Black Panther comic right now is Ultimate Black Panther. I can’t touch anything else being released right now because just like Spidey’s main line comics they are destroying my boys. Why can’t Marvel actually hire people who want to write GOOD stories for our mainline heroes?? Don’t even get me started on how catastrophic the MCU is treating T’Challa and the BP franchise smh 🤦🏾♂️
I don't think Ross's creation is quiet for the reasons you're saying. Racists aren't going to pick up a Black Panther book, no matter how many white characters you put in it. It sounds more like Ross is a POV character. One made to give non-black people someone to act as a stand in if they don't know who T'challa is or what motivates him.
Characters that have an unspoken rule that the writer has to share their identity tend to suffer writing wise. Brian Azzarelo isn't a woman but his new 52 take on Wonder Woman was fantastic. I tried reading Coates' Black Panther run but it was too 'written' and thus, boring. He couldn't adapt his writing style to comics. The idea that being black alone makes him qualified is ridiculous. I want to read the best pitch from the best writers regardless of their identity. I never read Bryan Hill's run but his recent Blade series was excellent. I hope Bryan Hill gets a shot at any character he wants regardless of their identity.
For real. Look at Al Ewing, Jonathan Hickman and David liss. Look at Jason Aaron as well. They write black panther better than every black black panther writer since hudlin. Bryan Hill seems to be a bit of an exception because of the recent blade series being good, and the amazing killmonger series he wrote. I think right now we should wait and see what Hill does with ultimate BP before we allow him to write 616 BP, because as of right now, I'm cautious of whatever writer will write BP. One more thing is that I think the recent black oanther writers were allowed to write BP simply because they were black and nothing more. Otherwise I don't know why John Ridley or Eve Ewing are writing t'challa. John clearly has mental problems and eve has no experience or resume required to write a compelling story, with writing not even being her main profession.
Ngl, I think you needed to do a lot more research for this video. You significantly undermined the importance of Priest's run, choosing to mostly harp on the few aspects that didn't age well instead. Also almost everything that's wrong with modern Black Panther can be traced almost directly to the foundation of Coates run, which you did absolutely no analysis on, instead just saying "ya everyone didn't like it." I'm a big hater of the Coates run, but I'm objective enough to know that's not true. There is a particular segment that really enjoys it and it would've been good to explain why. Sorry but this video kinda sounds like Ridley's Black Panther run is the only BP run you've actually read start to finish. No offense 🤷🏾♂️
Not sure if you actually watched the whole video, but i literally delved into what I liked about Priest's run, and how it really revolutionized T'Challas actual character (being the Man with the Plan, Mysterious Hero). This video was never about Priest's run, so of course I wasn't going to dive into EVERYTHING it did well, (although I might do so in the future because upon rereading it, I appreciate it alot more). Coate's run wasnt very well received within ACTUAL fans of the Black Panther mythos, and thats not my opinion, its just facts. I brought the omnibus and started reading it after posting this video, and it doesn't tarnish the Black Panther legacy whatsoever. Sure you can say its boring, and a bit wordy, but saying that EVERYTHING wrong with modern Black Panther can be traced to his run is a bit insane. Coates introduced MANY original concepts, and characters to the Black Panther mythos that I think serve the mythos well. You are right though, this video was originally made to be a deconstruction of John RIdley's Black Panther run, and i probably should have just made it that, rather than adding all of the character's history because I feel like I rushed the video alot, and it would have been better if it were JUST about John Ridleys run.
@@shinecomics you said the general public also didn't like Coates run. I'm saying that part isn't true, it was a lot of ppl's first BP run and for those ppl it was well received. You asked how Coates was able to write for so long and the reason is his first issue sold like, 350k+ units and was a critical darling in those non-comic reader literary circles. This is key information imo, cuz it shows why editorial is continuing down this path with BP - Coates made them A LOT of money at first while "elevating" the title. My point about everything wrong with modern Black Panther being traced to Coates run is true bro. Your complaint about Wakanda being written like it's neo-fascist starts with HIM, not Ridley. Coates' run is the start of the heavy deconstruction of T'Challa as a king/superhero and Wakanda as a state. You gotta actually finish it first bro. Coates introduced the idea of r*pe camps in Wakanda that apparently both T'Challa and the crown didn't give af about, retconned Wakanda into being colonizers that killed and displaced the original inhabitants (the Originators) of the land, and then made them space colonizers with the IGE (which he also made T'Challa "responsible" for). The entire first arc of a Nation Under Our Feet is pretty much T'Challa as the antagonist, with Ayo/Aneka as the protags. Coates literally had T'Challa meet with fascist dictators to get advice on how to stop revolutions. This is the light he painted T'Challa in and it all culminates with the Dora chanting "No one man!" and turning the country into a democracy (one of the single worst contributions of his). Also Coates is the start of the trend of Black Panther writers who's main acclaim isn't from comic writing but other literary works. Coates is an essayist first, Ridley is more known as a screenwriter (Twleve Years a Slave) and E Ewing's main bag is as a sociology professor. Coates is the inception of multiple trends and downward spirals of the BP comic franchise.
@@shinecomicsWithout Priest, Black Panther would have been garbage. The reason Black Panther sucks is because coates came and trashed it bit by bit. In fact, BP written from the point of view of Black Americans who haven't done research on the motherland hurts the series itself. Stan Lee created Wakanda but didn't know what the heck to do with the World until Priest became their literary messiah that saved the Characters's legacy. Priest also did much research on África which helped to built the nation of wakanda from scratch. Even basing the Dora Milaje on historical female African warriors that appeared decades later in cinema in the woman king.
RESPECTFULLY, I gotta disagree. Hudlin’s run is inferior in every way. Priest’s run was a deconstruction & social commentary on American Culture, Black culture, Interracial relations, and comic book culture. Hudlin straight up just wrote an action comic. It felt dumbed down & T’Chala was written as a “black superman”. Priest wrote T’Chala as a flawed man trying his best in a complicated world. Please revisit Priests run, I really think you got it wrong. RESPECTFULLY
I like Priest's run the most, but I also enjoy Hudlin's dumb, cartoon version and wish there had been 200 issues like that done in the Silver/Bronze Age to build up the character. For me, it was refreshing to read a streamlined, ass kicking version of the character that wasn't mopey and dour.
Hudlins run was amazing but it felt episodic more so. It was a bit more cartoon-like and is easily tchallas funniest run. It's still considered one of black panthers best comic runs. The arc of "who is the black panther?" is considered one of the best Black panther stories, and was so good it even got a television series. Man without fear is an underrated run in my opinion. It showed black panthers competence even without his resources. It showed us his detective work, skill and especially his intelligence despite having taken a different identity while having limited resources.
@@dubialexander9802 totally agree, and "Who is the Black Panther" is the movie the fans deserved- the one we got is ok, but ultimately has done more damage than good to the character, his mythos and "brand" imo..and I didn't mean "dumb, cartoon version" as a diss, there's definitely a place for that in superhero comics and I will take that over Coates' dreary and miserable pseudo-intellectualism any day.
@@nivekleveb8872 fr. Coated run is what bad writers think black panther should be portrayed when leaning into more depth of the character. @@dubialexander9802 I liked the first few issues of the Intergalactic Empire storyline, it just went too long and Zenzi's redemption or whatever that was is unearned and the last few issues as a whole are dumb. I hate to get political, but the same people that consider themselves patriots rn, would 100% be considered too extreme 20 years ago.
that whole Ridley run was just weird. it may not have been boring but it wasnt good either, at least not to me. i feel like ridley was projecting his own life story into his bp run. thats why it seems so far left to the continuity.
Shine comics can you please do a video on the comic book version of killmonger because i think the mcu and Michael b Jordan ruined the killmonger character
I haven’t liked the Black Panther series since Secret Wars. I didn’t like what Coates, Ridley or the latest fired writer. Why are they constantly putting him at odds with Wakanda? What we like about this imaginary city is the unity within and threats only come from external forces. They turned Wakanda into every other city on earth and thought we would love it. These writers really think subverting expectations is a mandate. People don’t usually like for their heroes to be defanged punching bags.
I mean this is the same company that created Tar Baby And also made a ridiculous storyline about black panther being the Pink Panther having to do with some sort of homoactual story line. The movie was successful because it had real black people and the Cowards that make the terrible storylines you usually see were hiding like the cowardly roaches they are. And it got a chance to thrive with real people.
The writer HIMSELF said that he made the Ross the main character to get more white people to buy the book. His words, not mine. The book is told from Everett Ross's perspective so that white audience's were more likely to buy the book.

Coates' is very boring (or atleast the first half). Ridley's run is ALOT of things, but boring isnt one of them.
@shinecomics that comic run was all over the place and brought nothing to the character overall you even say it took away from the character
First Mr.Fantastic get's cucked by Namor, then poor Colossus get's left at the altar, now Black Panther get's played! I have one word in the word of Farooq, DAMN!!!!!
Coates came in arouhd the all new all different era. Lots of non comic writers flooded in, many of which cared more about activism alone than any kind of good story telling. That kind change torpedoed marvel and dc to this day

Why do comic creators always character assassin the good characters
Because you can’t really assassinate a character that already poorly written.

He doesn't pronounce the "th" lo
Exactly what I was thinking
Storm and t"challa broke up way before coates and ridley run their relationship ended after namor flood wakanda and t'challa ended it because storm chose to be on the x men side instead of his
I know, but in Coates/Ridleys run, they were rekindling their relationship, and you can tekll they were going to get back together. Ridley however just destroyed it all and changed both Storm and T'challa for his story
Intergalactic of wakanda was 🔥. They put storm and tchalla back together and he became an emperor.

Thank you. It's a disgrace. I'm so tired of the deconstruction of characters just to build them back up. This is getting very old. He's already been through this when he lost vibranium after the Doom War and redeemed himself when he discovered that going back in time, to his ancestors to find vibranium in the universe, which became the foundation of the Wakandan Galactic Empire.
at this pace, im content reading manga and indie comics and i have no regrets nor do i miss anything from the big two
At least we still have Ultimate Black Panther
I mean....all comic book characters have had bad runs.
8 years and 3 consecutive writers, though?

Ta-Nehisi Coates did well with the Killmonger mini series, but to me his writing is not good for a long run.
That was Bryan Hill
That wasn't even Coates that wrote that. It was Bryan hill
Bruh these recent comics are looking like a modern day lynching lol.

In the case of Jason Aaron's Black panther being one of the few redeemable things from an otherwise very mediocre Avengers run imo
Outside of the other Avengers I feel like he was the only one that wrote both Black panther and Captain Marvel well as characters
Unfortunately the same cannot be said for how he wrote She-Hulk, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man.
@@sjbrigante4845Priest runs were the best that's it.
They got spider-man and gambit and ironman!!!! Now they got black panther!!!! They do that to our marvel heroes!!!!!!!!!!!
Spider-man: first time?
The reason for the grey skin is the combination of digital recoloring for rereleases AND the limited color palette of the 60s. This went for all black characters back then such as Bill Foster.
I wanna see black panther in more media and videos and everywhere 😂his my favorite hero
Yeah they fucked over black panther blade luke cage falcon bishop blue marvel etc
Blade - basically sideline by his owb daughter and put in a very mediocre Avengers comic by Jason Arron
Bishop - what was even the point of turning an evil not once but twice
Blue Marvel - why hasn't he been made leader of a main Avengers team since ultimates
Luke Cage - where has the character been since that unnecessary melodrama between him and Jessica that made it seem like the two were going through a divorce
Falcon - I put some of the blame on the writing teams that they get for the 616 Captain America comics, all of them are copy & paste Ed Brubaker's Captain America comics.
@@tyronleung5276
Wasn't it revealed in one of Jessica Jones last comic runs that her daughter had purple skin?
I don't know the whole story but I think the whole thing was meant to reveal that Jessica under the influence and control of the purple man was SA by him and as a result of the unprotected EX messed with her DNA. Resulting in her and Luke's daughter to have purple skin similar to that of the purple man
Don't know if that makes Luke Cage a cuckold since the whole thing between purple man and Jessica was due to the effects of mind control/manipulation and nothing that Jessica would do willingly.
Of course he sold well. The movie had just come out.
Dude, you DON’T KNOW COMICS!??
Besides Kirby, Priest kick the door down!
Storm with Black Panther …..DUD!

Wh9 do you think was the best ARTIST in the black panther series? I liked Stelfreeze
What’s on marvel and DC comics in Hollywood in general hiring activates and every time they fail they fail upward
And this is why i got classic comics
The truth is I could create the best one. But I am gonna start my own individual series with my own product.
Ngl, I think you needed to do a lot more research for this video. You significantly undermined the importance of Priest's run, choosing to mostly harp on the few aspects that didn't age well instead. Also almost everything that's wrong with modern Black Panther can be traced almost directly to the foundation of Coates run, which you did absolutely no analysis on, instead just saying "ya everyone didn't like it."
I'm a big hater of the Coates run, but I'm objective enough to know that's not true.
I think Wakanda needs more Wakandan based heroes inside Wakanda itself.
Coates was boring but Ridley was better? Ok.
