Over time it comes to be a lens through which they comprehend virtually everything. I'm stunned at how many people tell me, "I thought you were politically left. I mean, you're so nice." This branding effort by the left has been very effective, but it is an utter falsehood. The deepest differences between the left and right have to do with certain profound principles. Probably the two biggest are Individual vs. group identity; and equality of opportunity vs. equality of outcome. People on the right are just as good, kind, nice, friendly, honest, etc., as people on the left. And they care just as much about big issues like poverty and the environment. The difference is in HOW those issues should be addressed. Of course, the left doesn't want people to understand this. It serves their purposes to paint the right as greedy and mean spirited.

I think most people start out as a leftist with the best of intentions but as they get older and mature, they realise that they find more reasoning and tolerance away from them.
It's a matter of getting a job with real responsibility, and seeing how complicated it is to change things, even when everyone wants it to change. When you can't even simplify the pain-in-the-ass expense report procedure, you realize something like switching to sustainable energy won't be as simple as putting people who are passionate about that goal into the highest levels of government. Any work towards that goal is going to have to be incremental. So why complicate things with radical politics, class war and the like Socialism is great if your in college and think that any problem can be solved with grit, hard work, and goodwill, the way an essay can.
I think maybe that's also why a lot of artists and writers remain socialists their whole lives. They work relatively independently and are to some extent insulated from the breathtaking complexity of any moderate to large size organization. I'm still a leftist though, and think the change is really just a rejection of radicalism generally. You don't see 40 year-olds joining far-right organizations at anywhere near the rate of teenagers either. The problem is, when you go from radical left to a more pragmatic stance, in comparison to much of your peer group you've moved to the right.As i understand it, peoples actual positions on real-world political questions (like gay marriage or union rights) don't actually change all that much as they age.

I learned I wasn't a leftist 20 years ago, when I was 20 years old and working at my first real job. I mentioned to a Union coworker that I had *listened* to a conservative talk radio episode. A single episode. I was curious about viewpoints that I had never heard before. I asked him if he had ever thought about the topics. The result was my co-worker going into a red faced froth spitting tirade. He literally screamed in my face that not only was I an embarrassment to my "race" but that my parents were utter failures. In his words- all Hispanics must vote and think 100% Democrat or they are race traitors. This from a lily-white guy telling me how I was allowed to think and allowed to live. This didn't turn out to be a single one-off interaction but a very typical one as timed passed. I'm sorry you had to go through the ordeal you've been through but there is no better teacher in life than going through these kinds of trials. They left claims they care about discrimination and yet to meet this goal they enforce horrific discrimination. They claim to love freedom of expression, yet they must censor people to "protect" people from the wrong kind of expression. Every time careful examination into their causes is looked into you will find the truth isn't so simple as their stated reasons. You are a strong person and deserve credit for standing up and thinking for yourself.

While I do believe in "climate change", I am unconvinced about how much is caused by man and what realistically could or even should be done about it. And I don't have a problem with gay marriage. There is a much broader range of opinions on the right than the left wants you to think.

I used to be a leftist too but never intolerant and certainly didn't have a victim mentality. I knew nothing about conservatism, capitalism, free market, and the fundamental principles of the constitution. I am an atheist, a vegetarian, am pro-gay-marriage (and heterosexual marriage!), treat random members of different races the same, think that the climate is changing and on the aggregate getting warmer and this is due mostly to human influences, I am for protecting the environment... This branding effort by the left has been very effective, but it is an utter falsehood. The deepest differences between the left and right have to do with certain profound principles. Probably the two biggest are Individual vs. group identity; and equality of opportunity vs. equality of outcome.
People on the right are just as good, kind, nice, friendly, honest, etc., as people on the left. And they care just as much about big issues like poverty and the environment.
The difference is in HOW those issues should be addressed. Of course, the left doesn't want people to understand this. It serves their purposes to paint the right as greedy and mean spirited.

It seems that anyone who wants to fight for freedom of speech or has a different opinion from the mainstream narrative on things such as gun control or immigration is categorized as an alt-right extremist. I think most people start out as a leftist with the best of intentions but as they get older and mature, they realise that they find more reasoning and tolerance away from them.
It's a matter of getting a job with real responsibility, and seeing how complicated it is to change things, even when everyone wants it to change. When you can't even simplify the pain-in-the-ass expense report procedure, you realize something like switching to sustainable energy won't be as simple as putting people who are passionate about that goal into the highest levels of government. Any work towards that goal is going to have to be incremental. So why complicate things with radical politics, class war and the like Socialism is great if your in college and think that any problem can be solved with grit, hard work, and goodwill, the way an essay can.
I think maybe that's also why a lot of artists and writers remain socialists their whole lives. They work relatively independently and are to some extent insulated from the breathtaking complexity of any moderate to large size organization.
I'm still a leftist though, and think the change is really just a rejection of radicalism generally. You don't see 40 year-olds joining far-right organizations at anywhere near the rate of teenagers either. The problem is, when you go from radical left to a more pragmatic stance, in comparison to much of your peer group you've moved to the right.As i understand it, peoples actual positions on real-world political questions (like gay marriage or union rights) don't actually change all that much as they age.

I learned I wasn't a leftist 20 years ago, when I was 20 years old and working at my first real job. I mentioned to a Union coworker that I had *listened* to a conservative talk radio episode. A single episode. I was curious about viewpoints that I had never heard before. I asked him if he had ever thought about the topics. The result was my co-worker going into a red faced froth spitting tirade. He literally screamed in my face that not only was I an embarrassment to my "race" but that my parents were utter failures. In his words- all Hispanics must vote and think 100% Democrat or they are race traitors. This from a lily-white guy telling me how I was allowed to think and allowed to live. This didn't turn out to be a single one-off interaction but a very typical one as timed passed.
I'm sorry you had to go through the ordeal you've been through but there is no better teacher in life than going through these kinds of trials. They left claims they care about discrimination and yet to meet this goal they enforce horrific discrimination. They claim to love freedom of expression, yet they must censor people to "protect" people from the wrong kind of expression. Every time careful examination into their causes is looked into you will find the truth isn't so simple as their stated reasons.

I am an atheist, a vegetarian, am pro-gay-marriage (and heterosexual marriage!), treat random members of different races the same, think that the climate is changing and on the aggregate getting warmer and this is due mostly to human influences, I am for protecting the environment... We need open mindedness, however we need to do what’s best for our Country and what we hold as Canadians.
