Jenine the violinist appears to be working quite hard at some passages. I don't see anyone else put up offsets to the movements so... 00:00 I. Andante (Though it does get kinda lively as it progresses) 11:56 II. Vivace (Scherzando) OK, I dare you to get a handle on the meter of this obvious practical joke on the listener. Without seeing the score, of course! :-) 20:37 III. Adagio 32:03 IV. Poco a poco piu vivace. Hard to really tell; it is contiguous with the Adagio and starts rather gently. Then picks up something fierce. 40:07: Applause. Well earned!
9/8? but it plays tricks at you because the stresses are placed such that the first 6 out of 9 are split in 3 blocks of 2 and the last 3 are just a block of 3. so it sounds like 3 blocks of 2 and 1 block of 3.
Brava and bravo! I've had a deep love of Bartok's music since age 14 (65 years ago), but I'm astonished by this music, which came to my attention only within the last year. This is gorgeous, brilliant, fun, lively even mercurial, but, sofar as I can tell, very soundly constructed. I've always loved the boldness and daring of his music, its energy and mysteriousness, and its rhythmic complexity, dissonance, and acerbity, all of which he handled with flawless constructive genius--never a note out of place. But here is proof the young Bartok could write late-romantic music with the best of them! (Several years ago I heard an even earlier Symphony in E[?], which didn't impress me, and I don't much like his Violin Concerto no. 1. But in his String Quartet no. 1 [all six of them were among the very first of his works I heard and loved], composed 4-5 years after this work I believe, he has already passed over into modernism, of which he is one of the greatest exponents.) Thank you for posting this.
Thank You so much for presenting this great music showing the big changes at the beginning of 20th century! A lovely mix of old and new at the time. The former Bártók always is present in his rhethms and in his unique was to wright "nightmusics"! Janine Jansen with her friends are great!
As I was listening to this quartet I had indeed the impression that it's an early composition by Bartok, because it's a little known piece and also because it's less innovative it seems to me than his better known works.
I was just wondering how the heck was this Bartók? I could swear I thought they mistaken the composer for somoene else or the man had just fallen deeply in Love with the woman of her dreams while writing this work...
In what country do these beautiful musicians live and what are their names, including the lady that turns pages for the pianist? Thank you for playing young Bartok with such feeling and being so brave in your interpretation!
The movements are: I. Andante - (Accelerando al) Allegro - Meno mosso - Allegro molto II. Vivace scherzando - Moderato - Vivace scherzando - Vivo - Moderato III. Adagio - Adagio molto - Meno adagio, maestoso - Adagio molto - Maestoso - Adagio molto - Agitato - Maestoso IV. Poco a poco più vivace - Vivace - Vivace molto - Moderato - Vivace molto - Vivo - Vivace - poco a poco più agitato - Maestoso (meno vivo) - A tempo più vivo - Presto - Meno mosso - Moderato - Prestissimo - Ritardando
Ci vuole solo Janine per farmi digerire Bartòk... Grazie Janine, nessun'altro ci sarebbe mai riuscito!
+P.L. Crosley He did. This was written in his earlier years before he discovered folk music. The fact that he renumbered his opus numbers after he discovered folk music shows that he probably wanted us to "forget" this earlier style of his.
+John Wells "This was writtenin his earlier years before he discovered folk music. The fact that he renumbered his opus numbers after he discovered folk music shows that he probably wanted us to "forget" this earlier style of his." - slateflash Sounds like it is.
Each time I come back listening to this *majestic* performance, l'm grateful to Mrs Jansen for her so charming smile...
Sorry, you'd better shut up with your sexist and ridiculous "...so charming smile..." She is just a marvelous violinist (m/f)!!!
Just heard this live yesterday. Simply exquisite!!!

Mr. Friends performed very well in this performance with master violinist and world-famous musicianperson celebrity Janine Jansen

Bartok was 22 years old when he wrote this piece.
sonicsnap117 I always thought it was in his final years.

@@nocturnallsnake4228 Listen to some late Bartok and compete it with this!
"compare" , not "compete", sorry

12:25 I love this guy haha
Love this quintet and the performance… 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Beautiful and comfort. Thanks.

Excellent performance!

Bravo~~ 👏👏👏 👏 👏
plenty of Hungarian flavours in this gorgeous piece!

The violist is Amihai Grosz, in brilliant form, as are they all.
Wonderful!

Which idiot could give thumbs down for this great piece of music and inspired performance.
He must be a guy without any culture nor any taste... (But this thumb down must have been removed: don't see it.)
Ci vuole solo Janine per farmi digerire Bartòk... Grazie Janine, nessun'altro ci sarebbe mai riuscito!
Composed in 1904, but revised by Bartok in 1921.
The credits are at the end
This is wonderful Bartok but did he even write it?
+P.L. Crosley He did. This was written in his earlier years before he discovered folk music. The fact that he renumbered his opus numbers after he discovered folk music shows that he probably wanted us to "forget" this earlier style of his.
+slateflash Thank you! Wow I love that man even more.
If this is Bela Bartok, it must be a very early composition.

Sounds like it is.
he was only 22

Sorry for mistakes: "The later Bártók", and "rhythms" and "unique ways" would be ok
This is the piece Frazier wanted to introduce his radio show.
