Don’t live with a fistula like I did for two years. Get the damn surgery. It’s an outpatient procedure and not that bad at all. I was out of surgery, on a plane, and back home in less than 5 hours. I was so afraid of fly home the same day I was having anxiety attacks leading up to the surgery. It was a waste of time. I felt no pain leaving the hospital and felt no pain till two days later. Advil every 6 hours did it for me. It worked fine. I was so afraid of the pain during recovery I had my surgeon prescribed oxycodone just in case. The surgeon prescribed me 12. I didn’t take one. I was tripping out of my mind. Don’t let being afraid of pain/recovery stop/postpone your surgery. It’s not that bad.

I was getting a abscess every 3 weeks before I started this trial with raw honey, I'm proof that it works, and I'm very happy that I don't have to go through that pain anymore.

The previous doctor after doing multiple surgeries, he just let me be. The new doctor have some hope. He gave me two options; cutting seton or an endorectal flap. I understand that cutting Seton is the tighten up up the Seton. Does this method cause a lot of pain and discomfort including fecal incontinence?

Thanks for all that you do, Dr. Chung!! I have a question about anal fistula and hoping you have some answers.... I developed anal fistula about a year ago, which was painful with pus discharge for first 6+ months. But then the symptoms started to improve and for the past 3 months, there are no symptoms (pain, itch, discharge etc). And in the past 2 weeks, the outer fistula opening on the skin also seems to have closed. Is this a problem, Dr Chung? You had mentioned that the passageway should remain open else it will build up infection/abscess . What can I do to reopen the outer opening - if you have any suggestions then please do let me know..... Also, in your opinion - can anal fistula heal like this on its own? I did not go through any surgery or take any medicine; I just do my best to prevent constipation and also, avoid certain foods.

A Fistula is a tract from the inside of the anus to the outer skin. This is caused by an abscess which is caused by a bacterial infection, that eventually bores it's way through muscle tissue etc to the outer of your body. A fissure is a tare usually around or inside the Anus. I have unfortunately had both and they are extremely painful. Hope this explains what they are.

I had my sigmoid colon, rectum and anus removed 9 years ago due to cancer. Both incisions healed quickly and with no issues. Several months ago I noticed a clear, pale pink discharge in my intergluteal cleft. Not a large amount at first but over the past 2 weeks it has turned pinker and if I don’t keep it bandaged, it will leak through my clothing. The incision is a little swollen and tender(especially when sitting) but not so painful that I can’t deal with it. Just curious why the is would suddenly occur 9 years later. Thanks!

Nope. It was one research journal article, which in my opinion was a very weak study.

Hi doc, just want to ask, i got fistulectomy april 11, 2023 and during recovery i notice small hole was deform and small amount of watery with thicker yellowish transfarent but no bad smell that hole located near anus base in your experience how long should the drainage last? There was small string left by the doctor because during operation they just put the string to stop small bleeding. And i notice it almost 1 month now that hole till now did not close. But i believe it will close because when i check it become small and small. One thing that i worried is those small amount of watery and tchiker yellowish transfarent . And what should I do?
    Your advice is much appriciated.
    Thank you doc.

Remember your anal glands themselves help create natural mucus. ( because they are so close in proximity to the newly formed tract of scar tissue healing around the medical string ) watery or thicker discharge can and probably will come out of the small hole for a while.. Also many foods and drinks ( especially alcohol ) can ramp up and increase inflammation and mucus production.. if you have some problems with drainage, it may be tied to dietary choices.
