I wish we had more of the happy-ever-after endings, I am a total romantic. We need more of normal every day lives that we live too but with a good helping of seduction. Love all your takes, can't get enough.
Two words...”Kyss Mig” or in English “Kiss Me”. You’ll thank me and …You’re welcome. Words cannot describe adequately the pivotal love scene. It has to be experienced.
I love period films because I enjoy aesthetics, romanticism, and repressed feelings. But I would love more modern films where Lesbian characters say, "I am a lesbian" and live a relatable life. But I don't want fewer Lesbian Period Films, I just want more Lesbian Contemporary Films. Variety is the game. The people want variety.
@bubbly ms116 Basically, all the stories in which women are in a secret/illegal at the time relationships may at first seem sexy and fun, but when the film is directed by a man, it turns into an opportunity for them to look in on what is supposed to be a private moment, in an often creepy way. Many lesbians films place you in the position of this creepy man, without realising it.
the only thing I really like about period films when they're set in times where it was much less safe for most women to come out: the way they discover that the other is also gay. the looks, the stares, the touches... THE TENSION. it's less about the forbidden part for me but more about finding out WHOA SHE'S A LESBIAN TOO!
Forbidden love is exciting. I love period pieces. But an earlier repressed era also means there is much more of a chance of a miserable ending. Another part of our history of representation is the endless angst-filled unhappy endings as listed in the Celluloid Closet. Sometimes I get tired.
I agree too, but was thinking what about a movie when a woman travels back in time and meets another woman and in the end they come back together and live on happy ever after
Thank you for addressing the general lack of diversity in these lesbian period films!! Don’t get me wrong, I love them and I’m going to watch them every time (lol) but more woc representation-specifically black women-would be great. Also, Ammonite was my favorite film of 2020 too!
This breakdown narration was fantastic! Here is my summation. In order to get the big studios to create more modern and up-to-date lesbian films we must support the Indi-films and smaller studios that do make current time movies such as Elana Undone. That cue will spark the big studios to move in that direction. Or just communicate to them what we want on social media platforms. Be gregarious and ostentatious in our desire through social media 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
There are many layers to this. You have to keep making them but maybe get in more diverse films. Maybe more A-list actresses to play in these roles. Awesome breakdown Evelyn!!
Lesbian period films are the best. The visual the chemistry the tension the story, EVERYTHING is there. People need to make more of these ASAP it's been a while
Evelyn, thank you so much for this video on Lesbian Period Films. I’m old enough to remember when finding any film with a wlw theme was few and far between. Over the years the quantity and quality has gotten so much better. I will always support wlw films with my $$$. I also keep an eye on fundraising web sites for female filmmakers who are looking to make wlw films. Period pieces most often have heartbreaking endings due to the reality of those times, but there are so many stories to tell of women who found love with each other despite the odds. Hopefully the success of Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Ammonite and The World to Come will inspire more wlw films to be made, no matter what period the story takes place.
Love this mini video essay style! I agreed with basically everything you said in the video. We definitely need more diversity in storytelling and casting, but the forbidden love trope that comes with period drama is very relatable. 😉 I miss comedies like D.E.B.S and But I’m A Cheerleader. Can we have more shamelessly silly, hilarious lesbian movies? Like Booksmart but more adult and gay.
Me: Oh god why lesbian period dramas are so few? I've watched probably just 3 of them! I'm honestly so tired of modern lesbian movies! *Meanwhile every lesbian film released being a period drama and watched by me*
You shouldn't be discouraged from writing lesbian period dramas. There are actually far more "straight" period films made in total numbers and proportions as compared to all lesbian and LGBTQ period films made combined. I encourage you to continue telling these stories.
There should be more variety in historical eras covered by these movies. Why is every movie set during the 1800's? Why not movies set in ancient Rome, or 15th Century Ottoman Empire, or France in the 17th Century?
I absolutely love lesbian period films! Am currently obsessed with The World to Come. Saw it three times at the theater. So beautifully done and the chemistry is ridiculous! I love when the actors are all in! Also loved Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Both more than Ammonite, but that was also good. Looking forward to the upcoming releases! Love your vids. 🙂
I watch and love period movies since i was kid and i was not even aware of myself. So lesbian period movies are my ultimate jam and i want as much as possible of them 😂 wonder why so much focus on emily dickinson and why no one ever made one about the OG lesbian Sappho
A lesbian love story is such a beautiful thing, and period films with their warm, lavish, or distinguished, classy costumes and settings are so beautiful. Put them together, and you have near-perfection! I say keep'em coming, and maybe they will help inspire that kind of thing more and more in real life.
You know what I'd love... futuristic lesbian movies, still with that forbidden love romance. Unfortunately I don't have the patience to write a screenplay but i have a promising idea. Also i really want to watch the World to Come but i would have to drive 2 hours to another state just to see it. Crazy 😧
I love these types of films. Forbidden love in repressive eras? Girl I'm there lol. It is true that we need more diverse lesbian period films though. White women weren't the only ones ripping a bodice or two.
You're right, it's very debatable. Ohhhh, the happiest season issue :))) I agree with your slide where you said that not every film is for everyone. Awesome video, as always!
It's the mutual pining/forbidden love for me. I just wish they could have more happy endings. That's why I read books - authors of period lesbian romance books pretty much always find a way to give the wlw a HEA. Great video Evelyn!
aww you reviewed Between Summer and fall ( zwischen sommer und herbst) on your patreon?!! I don't know why but I really like that movie!! but back to the current program. I am with you on this. I LOVE all these period drama's, ALL OF THEM and it is a Catch-22. I notice different things now when I re-watch movies.. I am more tuned to the feminism, but also the BIPOC cast of it. LIke La Belle Saison for example.. they misrepresented those women I think. I am excited to see Summerland, with Gugu Mbatha-Raw who was also in San Junipero.. is that a period movie?? :) great video!! as always!
Interesting video! As far as representation goes, my thoughts have always been that if we want something, the best thing to do is to make it ourselves. I know that means that you don't get a big budget and it won't be in theaters and might be harder to market, but I still think that a lot can be done with a small budget and that's what we should be working on. Hollywood only cares about money, and I've never understood the reaction that people have to just complain about content instead of endeavoring to make their own. We're not at their mercy, and we have our own stories to tell. I'm a musician and I have a bunch of lesbian songs, and it's just a hobby so it's taking me a while to get good at it, but someday I'd really love to be able to contribute music to lesbian webseries or other low budget projects that can just bypass Hollywood. That's my take on it, anyway. We can't change Hollywood, but we can tell our own stories!
I love period films because I am a history lover and I know there is more to history than what was written in our school books love ya and love the vids
So funny and true. i showed my spouse this, who said thanks for showing me that, loved your editing and found the whole thing very entertaining. also, thanks for posting the list. i was amazed to find ones i had not seen. i agree with everything you did say and kind of sort of maybe said. many times you made me laugh out loud. Summerland was a step in the right direction.
There are actually far more "straight" period films made in total numbers and proportions (%) as compared to all lesbian and LGBTQ period films made combined. The total number of lesbian period films amounts to probably 0.5% of the total number of "straight" period films. I actually love, appreciate, and support these lesbians films. If I was a screenwriter, filmmaker and producer, your video "Not Another Lesbian Period Film" would discourage me from making more lesbian period films. I don't want to discourage more lesbian (period) films from being made. I want to positively support them, not discourage them. There is room for straight and lesbian period films.
Girl, I'm drunk! I love period films, lesbian or not, but I agree with you about the lesbian ones, they provide an easy to digest form of lady gayness. For this reason probably, and I say probably for a reason, sometimes they are overcast. I mean, Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron or Cate Blanchett gay? For a man it is more erotic than ever, for a woman... well, it is the same. And while it is obvious to me why they are deemed to be more palatable for the audience, I'd dare you to make a video about that, even if you don't have the time to do it ;)
TV shows are the more diverse and more contemporary, and don't always have the forbidden love premise.. period dramas as you well said are about that and put the relationship, the struggles, the opression in the center. Sadly that is still happening around the world to a lot of women and there's probably tons of stories that are worth a movie, but because it's so actual it becomes more like a documentary like A secret love... This is why i'm usually more drawn to TV shows, and my favourite one's aren't about the difficulties of coming out or being opressed in a heteropatriarcal world, but about cool plots and with a lesbian relationship in the center like Humans, Orphan Black, the 100, But at the same time I also like some representation and visibility of the struggles like south of nowhere, gentleman jack, skins, the wilds, skam germany (skam france is more about the stuggles of a relationship in general)... TV SHOWS are usually more experimental and open.
Although i adore lesbian period dramas and honestly want them to keep coming i'd also like them to be more inclusive. modern dramas would be appreciated too, a wide diverse selection is always good
Danish movie "A Soap" is a well made movie and it gives you diversity for sure and social realism. Search YT for Nimbus Film: "A Soap (2006) - Official Trailer HQ - England Subtitles"
One film can't "represent" everything and everyone. I'd be nice to just enjoy a film instead of focusing on the bad things (which is what many people do). Of course it's not enough, but not long age we didn't have anything at all. ps: I love lesbian period films ♥
While I'm not a huge fan of period films in general, the main reason why I don't like a majority of these films is that it brings up our community's trauma and it's just so sad. Like for example, Tell it to the Bees was a pretty good movie but then at the end, they had to show very graphically the violence of "being turned straight". It brought up so much for me and I was in tears panicking. Like I just wanted to watch a romantic movie that I could relate to with the woman I was dating. I understand that these movies are important because it shows history, but I'm just tired of it. I wish they would invest more money into contemporary films with queer women, where we are just existing without the trauma. It feels like in order to see a decent movie with queer women in it, that you have to watch these period pieces. I think we have enough of them, and our lives/experiences need to be represented in a multitude of ways, and not always from the angle of our trauma.
Honestly carol gets a pass because I am a sucker for cate blanchet and the handmaiden is just…special but overall I am tired. Because we don’t just get much of a appropriate amount of representation in present films.
They should make more! At least they have lesbian movies. I wish they made more yuri manga. But there is mostly yaoi. So let me enjoy lesbian period films.
Truth I feel like it’s partially on the aspect of the forbidden romance. Most movies about that kind of stuff require the aspect of the person(s) fearing the outcome of them telling who they are Nowadays when a person does that they are met with acceptance and encouragement to follow who they are. Movies set well into the past have that motif of fear. So to a sense they make lesbian period movies just to keep the taboo aspect
I LOVE Lesbian Period Films, I want MORE and I can't get enough of them. I want MORE diversity in upcoming Lesbian period films and was VERY happy to see "Summerland" which I bought. I don't want downer films, I want them ALL to end with the 2 Lesbians together, living happily ever after because the VAST majority of Lesbians I know Happy, Healthy, Wealthy and Wise. Bring it on. I don't want to see black women of the ghetto, but middle class and up, NORMAL life for most. And make it as period as possible. From Egypt to Civil War to Present Day. Stop making the Egyptians white and I'd love to see more Vikings & African Warrior Queen Stuff. And if you need a story, I've already written one. AND I LOVE YOUR YOU TUBE Videos.
Call me a cup half empty girl, but with the mainstream big period films I think it's because you can still have men in starring roles in them as unknowing or angry husbands and suspicious fathers. In contemporary lesbian films, you wouldn't need leading men.
I'm weird in that I have to like the period to like the show. Carol is perfect for me because I love the 20th Century. But things like Gentleman Jack, I saw the first three episodes and couldn't get into it. Could you recap Loving Annabelle? Would love to hear you thoughts on it
We have had Man on Women films for over 120yrs now. As soon as the Women on Women films start getting their rightful place on-screen straight people are up in arms! Let's have more film & tv Women on Women romance and you haters...there's always the switch-off button.
Fantastic just fantastic how did you manage to guess what I have been asking myself for the past 10 years. I have enjoyed all of these movie but man wouldn’t a good old fashion contemporary romcom just be what the community needs. Or even a super well done action film where the lady cop has to rescue her girlfriend from from some female captors who have some sort of extreme feminist agenda and want to blow up the patriarchy but just literally!!!
Very surprised that you liked Ammonite. Don't get me wrong, I love lesbian period films, but Ammonite just felt so male gazey. Mary Anning has never had a film made about her before and she is the mother of paleontology. I feel they completely pushed aside all of her scientific achievements for the love story. The love story would have been an awesome B plot, but the real tragedy is the fact that men were stealing her work since she was 12 - surely that's where the drama is? The moment at the end (sorry SPOILERS) when she's in the museum should have been so powerful and been a moment for her to "reclaim her time", especially as a I don't believe she ever visited the museum when she was alive, but sadly it was the moment she decided to live in her girlfriend's spare room. Maybe I was frustrated because I knew a bit more about her story before I saw the film but I just don't think it did the real historical figure a whole load of justice for her life's work. However, I do hope we continue to see more female love stories, maybe with more female directors too...
hello eve,,yes i like them almost all of them,,but,,,i will watch them just to see if i want more,,lol,,thats me weirdo;;i want a tv, series that leaves the good parts in,,like cagney and lacey,,they would have made a good pair,,,rookie blue another one that needed more of what they started,,but stoped if people dont like what they see,,dont watch,,its adult entertainment,,,sorry i ranted,,thank you eve well done,,,;)
I don’t Like the period thing but watch to support. Was collette well received?how did Keira knightly do? Evelyn have you ever seen affinity? It’s based on a Sarah waters book.. lmk
The critics seemed to like Collette but i don't think it was as popular as some of the others...And Affinity was meh. It's my least favorite Sarah Waters adaptation (didn't read the book tho)
Another wonderful video dearest! I just want I say… that when I describe the least sexy and least appealing women in the history of humanity… it is always Victorian or Edwardian women. I mean listen, if you're into what you're into, I'm happy for you but dang, as a Latino woman raised in the West Indies, I cannot deal with all of that makeup and layers of clothes. wear one layer of makeup if you must and one layer of clothes!
From what I understood, those complaints on Twitter are all about movies set pre 20th century. I don't see them complaining about movies/series like Carol or Bly Manor.
I can only make one comment: I love lesbians movies, no matter what. That's it. I see all of them, even the bad ones, like Bound. And I always want more.
Here's the list from the video and feel free to add any i've left out.
Carol, Bessie, Desert Hearts, Ammonite, Portrait of Lady on Fire, The Color Purple, Cracks, Elisa y Marcella, Gia, Love & Friendship, Vita & Virginia, Reaching for the Moon, The Hours, The World Unseen, Fingersmith, Affinity, Tipping the Velvet, The Handmaiden, Tell it to the Bees, To the Stars, Colette, The Girl King, Summerland, The World to Come, Battle of the Sexes, Aimee & Jaguar, Heavenly Creatures, Sister My Sister, Lizzie, Wild Nights with Emily, A Quiet Passion, Dickinson, The Favourite, Carmilla (2020), The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, Gentlemen Jack, Violette, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, The Affair (The Glass Room), Benedetta, Farewell My Queen, The United States vs Billie Holiday, The Sea Purple, Shirley, Another Way, Daphne, Mystery of the Eiffel Tower, The Duke of Burgundy, The Haunting of Bly Manor
i didn't realise there were so many..... seems like its more than modern lesbian movies
You forgot Snapshots again lol 😂
According to definition Bly Manor is period, but it is a grey area, i don't really feel it as period...maybe i am old 😂
I'm so gay that I've watched at least 95% of these movies.
I wish we had more of the happy-ever-after endings, I am a total romantic. We need more of normal every day lives that we live too but with a good helping of seduction. Love all your takes, can't get enough.
I like the period movies, but am tired of sad endings. I want to see the women ride off into the sunset together.
Want to see them living happily ever after. No more sadness. It would be so beautiful then. Thanks. Love, Nilani.

Yes! I love period films and want some modern ones as well, but No More young girls or teens!
that's more with tv shows
The whole "having to hide who they are" plot in period films adds to its charm. Forbidden love is such a hit even if it is filled with cliches
You’re so right
I think the difference is that by having women have to hide their sexuality, it become a taboo and places the male viewer in the place of the voyeur.

Yes absolutely

Thank you for addressing the general lack of diversity in these lesbian period films!! Don’t get me wrong, I love them and I’m going to watch them every time (lol) but more woc representation-specifically black women-would be great. Also, Ammonite was my favorite film of 2020 too!
If Bly is period drama, I'll take period drama any day.
I would say it is because it's set in the past as well (80s), although regarding the approach it could be set up nowadays, I think.
Oh my god that Will Smith edit 😂😂
Lol
😂
Right? HAHAHAHA. FUN
Evelyn you it on the nail! As a woman of color I’ve definitely noticed this exclusivity of period films :/ but I watch them anyway

This is why i'm usually more drawn to TV shows, and my favourite one's aren't about the difficulties of coming out or being opressed in a heteropatriarcal world, but about cool plots and with a lesbian relationship in the center like Humans, Orphan Black, the 100,
But at the same time I also like some representation and visibility of the struggles like south of nowhere, gentleman jack, skins, the wilds, skam germany (skam france is more about the stuggles of a relationship in general)... TV SHOWS are usually more experimental and open.
I enjoy every film with girl love girl theme, no matter when or where :)
Although i adore lesbian period dramas and honestly want them to keep coming i'd also like them to be more inclusive. modern dramas would be appreciated too, a wide diverse selection is always good
I love period movies anyway. So I absolutely enjoy seeing lesbian period movies. It’s romantic and passionate. Love your channel!
Your videos are so well-thought through and entertaining to watch. Amazing work!😁
This was beautifully written and narrated.🔥🔥🔥🔥
Danish movie "A Soap" is a well made movie and it gives you diversity for sure and social realism. Search YT for Nimbus Film: "A Soap (2006) - Official Trailer HQ - England Subtitles"
Thanks for the recommendation!
This video it's inspiring and provides several food for tought! Thank you Evelyn!
"...removing just one glove" HAJHAJAHA lmao, you got me laughing there
One film can't "represent" everything and everyone. I'd be nice to just enjoy a film instead of focusing on the bad things (which is what many people do). Of course it's not enough, but not long age we didn't have anything at all.
ps: I love lesbian period films ♥
Smart and funny. 🔥 Thank you. 🙏
(06:43 who is this ?)
Victoria Kent Siano i think
I love lesbian films which are hot on romance, and I love period costumes. We need more lesbian films please.
My favorite period films have to be Fingersmith and Summerland, amazing movies with happy endings.
Getting down and dirty 😩 no quickies with those layers 😂😂😂. Chances of getting caught by the husband must have been very very high🤔🤭.
What was the movie with the mixed race girl in the lake?
Call me a cup half empty girl, but with the mainstream big period films I think it's because you can still have men in starring roles in them as unknowing or angry husbands and suspicious fathers. In contemporary lesbian films, you wouldn't need leading men.

You're so funny! I enjoy your videos a lot.
Does anyone now the music playing in the backround? I've been trying to find this song for ages!
I can't stop laughing at the Will Smith part. That is so me!!!🤣😅😊🙃
Ayyye that’s Madonna!! Forbidden love!!! Love that song. Lol
great vid! Thanks for making and sharing
Totally agree with the Catch-22 you bring up.....how do we get past that?
Just what I was looking for recently.. thinking why lesbian movies are so sad, deep, heart breaking and sometimes hard to digest few of them
But I loooove them 😭❤️
I love Ammonite too. 😭👌
Thank you Evelyn regarding the videos.. Thanks Dear. Love, Nilani.
Am I the only one who likes the period films the way they are I think they’re better
Dead on with this commentary. I still love the period pieces the best also... All that forbidden love is yes HOT!!
Exactly!
Great video, thank you.
All of your videos are awesome
I don’t Like the period thing but watch to support. Was collette well received?how did Keira knightly do? Evelyn have you ever seen affinity? It’s based on a Sarah waters book.. lmk
The critics seemed to like Collette but i don't think it was as popular as some of the others...And Affinity was meh. It's my least favorite Sarah Waters adaptation (didn't read the book tho)
Lesbian movie with period era always ended tragic with seperated or dead and I hate that so much but they story is so good
2:54 Omg I died roflmao
Another wonderful video dearest! I just want I say… that when I describe the least sexy and least appealing women in the history of humanity… it is always Victorian or Edwardian women. I mean listen, if you're into what you're into, I'm happy for you but dang, as a Latino woman raised in the West Indies, I cannot deal with all of that makeup and layers of clothes. wear one layer of makeup if you must and one layer of clothes!
Good review but I still love period pieces. Thank tou
I love period films, cause I am a sucker for history and queers. and as a person in a third world country it is most relevant to me.
From what I understood, those complaints on Twitter are all about movies set pre 20th century. I don't see them complaining about movies/series like Carol or Bly Manor.
Really? That's interesting. I've seen a lot of complaints about Carol...definitely less about Bly Manor, but still some.
I actually hate period films because they alway end bad. But I will watch anything wlw.
Representation and Shout out to B&N, open up ur lesbian book section!
I can only make one comment: I love lesbians movies, no matter what. That's it. I see all of them, even the bad ones, like Bound. And I always want more.
I love gentleman jack! Anne and Ann forever😌
I love a lesbian period film with a happy ending.
