    The utmost terrifying line to hear in this... "People didnt even know what the electoral college was" 😫 that's a killer.

    • @MattyDemello
      @MattyDemello 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      YES! That hit me hard. I can't believe that the majority didn't know how that works. Very sad indeed. A hole in our education 100%. TO many do not even know why our founders created the electoral college system. They have no idea that it was so big states can't boss around and pick on little states and chose every president. Kids don't know that today.

    • @RabidNemo
      @RabidNemo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MattyDemello I completely agree and it is sad that people don't better understand that! Another thing to factor in is that there are some states that have an unfair number of electoral votes. For example California has over 50 electoral votes

    • @266sasuke
      @266sasuke 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well the fact that before the 2000 election, it had been a long time since the winner lost the popular vote, and I want to say that most people assumed that the popular vote decided who won the presidency because most of previous presidents have won both the popular vote and electoral college. Again, most people focused on the popular vote and since previous elections proved their point, then why be curious about the electoral college? It's not until "it" happens that people begin to take notice haha.

    What I remember, is for every televised debate between Gore and Bush, a different Al Gore would show up with a different personality. My guess is he was listening to his handlers too much, and a different personality would show up for every debate. Was very strange, and sad in a way. Maybe if he would have been himself, he would have won. At least Bush was consistent.

    • @MattyDemello
      @MattyDemello 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Bob is right. What he means is, it almost felt like there were 3 different people running in the 3 debates. In debate 1 he acted like if he was a judge and sited boring law policies that no one cared about. The 2nd debate he acted like a used car salesman and flip flopped on things he said during his 1st debate. In the 3rd debate he was VERY threatening towards bush. Like not letting Bush speak and then the iconic "him running up behind Bush to mock him" it was strange. I felt no one REALLY knew the real Al Gore by the end of the 3rd debate. He also campaigned on raising taxes, lowering the social security age "when it was already going broke" and more polices that weren't right.

    I thought this, and then she backed it up at the end of the video, but this really was the moment that political discourse in America died. The candidates remained cordial and respectable for 16 more years, but the rest of the political climate did not, and then the candidates got down in the mud with everyone else. If you look back at 1996 and many of the elections before it, the country largely moved on and accepted the winner. No one felt they had been cheated or wronged by the system, though this may have been because not many people knew about the system (they didn't know what the electoral college even was). America before this didn't need to know, since politics and voting were not the primary interest area of most Americans. Government did its job, and if it didn't then you voted for the other side. After this, though, and ESPECIALLY after 2016, politics, voting, and heavy topics in general have seeped into every facet of American life. Its in churches, in movies, on TV, all around you. There's no escaping it, and the more people look at it the more wronged they think they are.

    I remember being immediately turned off by George W Bush when I first laid eyes on him. It struck me that the major political parties don't even have to try, that it's a race to the bottom in terms of quality of their presidential candidates, because they just aren't challenged by any independents or third parties. They have a stranglehold over the entire political system and the minds of the electorate. When 2016 came along, I found myself thinking of the Simpsons episode with the aliens running against each other for president and taunting the crowd after Homer unmasked them, saying that they had no choice because it was a two-party system, and indeed one of them was elected.

    This makes me feel old. The internet was a very different place back then. The conspiracy types were few and far between and you rarely met one in real life. Now they're everywhere and it's not just the obvious shut-in types these days. There were few echo chambers outside of mIRC chat rooms and early message boards. Lots of comments from people who weren't old enough or weren't born when this happened echoing sentiments that weren't even on the table yet. Things like hating Muslims, instead of the known bad apples. Hating Mexicans, instead of the cartels and the corrupt Mexican governments. Bush's "holy war" pandering to his evangelical crowd is what started all this shit we see today, including ISIS.

      Sorry, this shit started in the 60's. That's when the Viet Name war and the war on drugs divided the nation. It got worse in the 70's. That's when the "moral majority" hijacked the GOP. Not sure about the message boards in the 90's, I only read the tech boards. It was a good way to get references to white papers of new languages. Back then the best way to drive traffic to the sites I was developing was by using rings.

      It wouldn't have been much different. At that time in 2001 before the election. The terrorist was already planning out their 911 attacks. So that would've happened. Also under Clinton, we bombed Iraq 2 times during his time in office. THEN Al Gore was pushing the "Iraq has wmd's" BEFORE Bush even said that. Al Gore if anything criticized Bush for not being tough enough on Iraq. So we would've went to war with Iraq to. Nothing different would've happened. ALSO Gore was pushing for the SAME policies that caused the great recession. "giving fanny mae and Freddy Mac" MORE government home loan guarantees and backing that was going to fail later on.

Gore PUSHED the "Iraq has wmd's" line before Bush was even in office. It didn't matter who won. We would've went to war with Iraq either say. Kinda sad. I really liked Bush when he ran but he ended up being the opposite of what he ran for. So far Trump is doing exactly what he campaigned for unlike Bush. Bush did an 180 on Conservatism values and policy. So far Trump has stayed true to his word, putting in conservative judges. Bush put in Judges who vote WAY more with the leftist judges. Bush picked his judges to be more center / left. That was NOT what I wanted from Bush. I wanted judges like Trump has put on.

    • @MattyDemello
      @MattyDemello 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naw its cool. Good question. No worries. So conservatives "myself" believe in following the constitution to a T. in the way it was written. Liberal judges put their spin on the constitution and end up changing what our fathers meant. Its important for our rights that we have judges who do NOT look at what party elected them but to look at the constitution and judge based on that alone. For instance. If a constitutional right starts with "shall not" A conservative judge will say "obviously its, you can not" Liberal judges will try to change it and say "well shall not can mean shall if you want to or not" The liberal judges also stick together and vote for every democrat ruling. IF you look up the supreme courts records. You'll actually see conservatives judges voting all across the board. IF the dem judges are right on something, you'll see a few conservative judges agreeing and ruling with them. It happens a lot BUT what we never see is when the left wing judges vote with the conservatives.

Granted, I do not think the Constitution's clearly established intent should be misinterpreted or affected in any sort of way, but at the end of the day do we serve the people or men long dead? It's interesting. Who knows what society will and will not value come 20 years. I think the fight will be contentious as ever between those favoring strict and loose interpretations of the Constitution.

      Yes. 911 was already planned before the Election under Clinton's nose. In early 2001, the cia let the terrorist in "thinking they can track them and bust them" but the cia lost them and caused 911. After Osama bombed the trade center in 1993 "under Clinton" Our intel agents spotted Osama at a party in Afghanistan around 1998. They called the white house for the green light to take him out "before 911" and Clinton said "stand down" and didn't give the green light. The reason? Because the Monica Lewinsky trials where happening & the impeachment of Clinton. Clinton thought "IF the mission failed, it would be during a bad time" Clinton put his own selfish needs before keeping America safe and Osama got lost again. I've done a TON of research on this matter. We CAN'T kid ourselves and think "if Gore won, 911 wouldn't of happened" ALSO Iraq would've happened to. Gore was pushing the line of "Iraq has wmd's" during the campaign AND criticized Bush for being "not tough enough on Iraq"
