This is by far one of my favorite SNL skits. The whole "lock box" bit, and "strategery": political comedy at it's finest. Hammond was PHENOMENAL at impersonating Clinton, and then managed to pull off a great Gore. I think Ferrell delivered Bush without realizing he would have to maintain the character past the primaries and into a double term presidency... elevating him into "Hammond/Clinton" status. To this day, I'll use "strategery" to either enhance or lighten the mood of a political conversation, a topic I usually try to avoid. Darrell Hammond's performance as Al Gore is all the more remarkable when you know the following: "Hammond says that he was medicated throughout his tenure on Saturday Night Live, and that he cut himself backstage and was once taken from the studio to a psychiatric ward. The incident helped him come to terms with...the post-traumatic stress disorder lingering from his abusive childhood. Just prior to his 2000 appearance as Al Gore in a sketch parodying that year's first presidential debate, he had a panic attack over not remembering his lines. After cutting himself up the length of the arm and putting a gauze pad over it, he felt better and gave a performance so effective that Gore's campaign staff made him watch it to understand why he had aroused negative reactions in some viewers."

The opiode crisis must have started under Bush (I am making an assumption), and needless to say the Obama admin also could not be bothered to step on the toes of big pharma in order to protect the public. Many people overdose, many people get caught up in addiction, families ripped apart, children in foster care. the violence that accompagnies drug dealing. people lose their sense of morality if they are seriously addicted. They can become good citizens again if they get and stay sober - but under the wrong circumstances they might kill or harm someone while crazy on drugs, a burglary gone wrong and the shoot someone while being stressed out, etc. Or they steal from close family and friends. (money from a beloved sister, the wedding ring the mother inherited from the grandmother, etc.) Addiction has a massive societal fallout. Unless a nation goes the path of Portugal. Needless to say Obama the neoliberal took did not use his platform to there is a big societal collateral damage from these drugs. Insuline costs 10 times more in the U.S. like the same product in Canada. if you are responsible for the healthcare of a nation - the wellbeing but also what it costs, it is not so much about the spectacular surgery. It is the normal, generic things that must function. How you handle prevention, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, and that people go the the doctor early (often that helps to minimize harm or allows for a full recovery). Untreated or poorly managed diabetes (rationing insanely expenisve insuline) is a disaster - in everyrespect. And it will result in high costs later, but that spending will not even get you good outcomes for the patients. The insurers and big pharma do not care about the misery or the high costs later - it does not harm _them._ Under Bush the law was introduced (or it was consolidated) that no government agency can negotiate drug prices. Only VA can (and they brought prices down by 40 %). The private insurers are not interested in the battle of giants, they just pass on the too high costs. It is not like the consumers could abstain from buying. Necessary treatments / drugs are not like consumer products, no one can stop buying if they think it is a rip off. Under Obama Big Pharma got more perks (ACA was a very industry friendly "reform", the government just props up the dysfunction with a lot of money. drug companies got patent extensions !). and then again under Trump (testing for drugs was already fast, and they are now allowed to progress even faster. Plus of course the tax cuts for big biz). 30,000 people die from lack of healthcare coverage every year (Harvard study in Obama era, with ACA). A more recent study puts the death toll more in the range of 60,000. That is 300,000 - 600,000 people in 10 years, and unlike corona virus it will not stop at some point. Democrats ALSO gladly accept that collateral damage resulting from their service for the big donors. Never mind Republicans.
As much as this is silly comedy, they captured the essence of both candidates perfectly: George Bush Jr. the buffoon who's pleased with himself to get even once sentence out, and Al Gore the pedant who's too obsessed with articulating his favorite parts of his policy that he doesn't realize he's losing.
From Darrell Hammond's wiki: "Just prior to his 2000 appearance as Al Gore in a sketch parodying that year's first presidential debate, he had a panic attack over not remembering his lines. After cutting himself up the length of the arm and putting a gauze pad over it, he felt better and gave a performance so effective that Gore's campaign staff made him watch it to understand why he had aroused negative reactions in some viewers."

@@nickdimariamusic I disagree. Constantine is right. They have been skewering presidents for decades. And I suspect you or a conservative will come back with "Oh, it's bias" and whatever else. But I'm sorry, I don't see how any sane person can deny Trump's viciousness. You can support his policies or not, but as far as personality goes, he's about as bad as they come. The point of an impression is to highlight and exaggerate someone's most salient qualities. In Trump, that's his viciousness, incoherence, and egotism. If it were Romney, McCain, Cruz, or Rubio, it would feel totally different. Republicans can't keep crying bias and conspiracy when reality is staring them cold in the face. He's a bad guy. So the impressions reflect that.

Addiction has a massive societal fallout. Unless a nation goes the path of Portugal. Needless to say Obama the neoliberal took did not use his platform to
there is a big societal collateral damage from these drugs.
The insurers and big pharma do not care about the misery or the high costs later - it does not harm _them._
Under Bush the law was introduced (or it was consolidated) that no government agency can negotiate drug prices.
@@chandlerwhite8302 Found the racist!
3:48 that Bush impersonation was so perfect. I couldn't stop laughing at that smirk
“Pass”. Hilarious 😂
Darrell Hammond is a national treasure
As much as this is silly comedy, they captured the essence of both candidates perfectly: George Bush Jr. the buffoon who's pleased with himself to get even once sentence out, and Al Gore the pedant who's too obsessed with articulating his favorite parts of his policy that he doesn't realize he's losing.
Yeah this skit illustrates why Gore lost. If only by 537 votes.
19 years later and it’s still hilarious.
I still find this hilarious a million years later.
I believe that some of your figures may be inaccurate
It’s crazy how this is objectively a more coherent and civil debate than 2024
Al Gore story about elderly friend is absolute comic gold
Dude, I f*cking miss Darrell Hammond
This is the best "SNL" segment ever.
I cant believe any of them didnt break character laughing
From Darrell Hammond's wiki: "Just prior to his 2000 appearance as Al Gore in a sketch parodying that year's first presidential debate, he had a panic attack over not remembering his lines. After cutting himself up the length of the arm and putting a gauze pad over it, he felt better and gave a performance so effective that Gore's campaign staff made him watch it to understand why he had aroused negative reactions in some viewers."
We still joke about the "lock box" to this day in my office LOL. "I'm going to take the coffee fund money and put it in a..... LOCK BOX! "

2000: Strategery
2017:Covfefe
2009: Corpse man
2000: Lockbox
2010: "You like your Doctor; You can keep your Doctor." One of endless lies about OBAMACARE.

2009 “If you like your doctor.....”
2018 “ There is no collusion”
2018 (continued)

- "No Smocking Gun"
Right..lpl
5:23 is literally the funniest Will Ferrell's ever been!! XD I lauged so hard!!
You can see his brain hurting.
I love Carvey, Hartman, etc"s debate impersonations but Hammond's Gore is incredible! The lockbox was practically on Gore's actual podium!
this performance of al gore is hilarious holy shit
"More seldom than not, the movies gives us exquisite sex and wholesome violence that underscores our values" lmao
Will Ferrell is perfect in this :D:D:D
itkojecockot Ikr!!😄😄😄
It was boring, and lame, because Ferrell didn't do Anything. It was so poorly written Ferrell couldn't even display his ability at all.
He got a lot better at playing Bush once Bush was President. Compare this to his “Conversations with Myself” bit and it’s nowhere near as funny!
@@nonenone5976 he did great shut up
It was really funny "I'm not going to pronounce those because it's not in our national interests". Lmao, really clever joke.
The way Darrell Hammond says "shark attack" at 7:45 gets me every time
“I happen to agree with him and I commend him FOR it...”
Back when SNL actually used its cast for political sketches.
Are Kate McKinnon, Larry David, and others not cast members?
@@noahhertzman3386 Larry David isn't. Most of the people they use for major political impressions these days aren't.
Funniest SNL debate parade ever. Literally LOL when al gore went on and on about the problems that senior had.
now this was gold!
Wish they would have the same comedic integrity in the show as they used to!
I think about this sketch almost every day. Twelve year old me thought it was the funniest thing she’d ever seen.
49 year old me still does
Two child did. I will.
5:23 Will Ferrell's "Confused Bush Face" is spot on!
The debate was unbelievable, but this was beyond comprehension - they nailed every single aspect perfectly for both sides. I cannot express how incredible this was to watch live. I have laughed uncontrollably at this train wreck for 22 years. It's a shame we never got to see what Mr. Lockbox would've done.
This would likely be a lot funnier today had Gore actually won, instead of the dolt we got, courtesy of the Supreme Court.
I remember in high school my government teacher said we're going to watch this as a learning experience and he let us watch this episode of SNL I love this one
I remember these days well. Everything was so much different before 9/11. We had no clue what we were in for.
Hammond's delivery here has me mesmerized; startling in comparison to the cue card reading in today's SNL.
And the cue card reading by the president!
Jeez just enjoy it
They read cue cards every season of SNL every week
So nice to think there was a time where we could make fun of both sides and everyone could laugh at these.
yeah now snl is more left leaning and makes stupid virtue signaling jokes where lefts laugh to
@@geovannyacosta5992 SNL makes fun of Trump the exact same amount as they did Bush, and Clinton, and Reagan, and Carter, and Ford. Conservatives today just seem to have a way thinner skin than they did 20-30 years ago (then again, given who's their role model, it figures).
@@MrConstantine02 If you watched the SNL presidential debate from this year you would know that's not true. I like Bush and I find this funny. There's nothing funny about Alec Baldwin's impression of Trump; just hate. I do agree that Darrel Hammond was actually pretty funny as Trump tho.
@@nickdimariamusic I disagree. Constantine is right. They have been skewering presidents for decades. The problem now is that Republicans have picked a truly immoral, hateful guy as their leader, so the impressions come off crueler because the president is cruel.
@@kevinconnor6035 I’m fine with making fun of trump. He’s an easy target. So is Biden. And “trump is terrible” doesn’t negate Biden’s terribleness. He’s a huge joke too. Let’s make fun of both! I think that’s pretty fair.
“they run to nearly $113 million a day” 😂😂
This was hilarious. They are both great but I adore Darrell Hammond he is so good
Darrell Hammond was the Perfect Al Gore!!
Oh man, I was a sophomore in college when these were on. I remember incorporating them into a paper I wrote for one of my government classes. Hilarious and now nostalgic.
jesus christ this is by far the funniest snl debate i've ever seen
Anyone else rewatching this after the Biden-Trump debate?
Yep
Me
no, because its my first time watching
That Al Gore Impression was spot on.
"Contains Nudity!" LOL and "Lockbox" I'm literally ROFL.
