- We are comparing a 20 dollar, 30 dollar and, 150 dollar 1918 trench knife to find out which is the best one! Formally know as the Mark 1 Trench Knife it is very legendary therefore a ton of reproductions have been made. Lets see which one is the best for its price point!!!! Maybe I could add this to my WW1 Uniform!

A couple of points about these. The "pommel" is for striking, not to resist disarms. It's there for the same reason the brass knuckle style handle is. Also, it's more likely these were used in an "ice pick" grip. Comes out of the sheath right into the hand much more naturally that way, and as close as those trenches were, it'd be at least as effective, especially with the knuckle dusters that let you simply punch people to good effect.
You could possibly do it for both disarms resist and for striking
The spike isnt for poking enemy hands it was for cracking skulls.
Mostly for cracking walnuts
I have an original I bought in the 1970s. In those days stuff like that was cheap. It was unissued condition. Still got it.

The same knife was also in use during ww2. The handguard was often filed down by soldiers as in the the cheap 20 dollar one, so this isn't incorrect, but more of an in the field modification. It made the knife more comfortable to wear, as the round handguard tended to be a pressurepoint while wearing it.
The bottom stud/spike was referred to as a "Skull crusher pommel, designed to me used in an ice pick grip against the opponents skull. It isn't an anti grappling spike. The knives were intended for close quarters trench and pillbox combat at halitosis to halitosis range.

This time i am rooting for the Cult.
I purchased one from Atlanta Cutlery several years ago. It came unsharpened with a metal sheath. I mounted it in a vice and sharpened it with a "Samurai Shark" until I got an edge on it. Them I went over the blade with a diamond sharpening stick and put a razor's edge on it. Now ity is a thing of beauty and can cut through most anything that gets in its way. Never can tell when you will need to carve up some two legged predator.

Landers Frary and Clark who made a good deal of the original trench knives are also known to have made the scabbards.
Being primarily a cutler who manufactured commercial utensils and such, and they simply used a spatulas for the belt attachment piece on the scabbards frog.
It was unknown for a long time until someone realized this piece on the frog was identical to the head of a LF&C spatula.
The bayonet might not have been great once you were in the trench, but going into the trench and chasing down the routing enemies it was perfect. Plus the Germans made some short knife bayonets which worked very well
One of the ways they recommended using the trench knife is when you jumped into the trench it was shoulder to shoulder fighting in a crowd you didn't have any room to move so as you jumped in you stabbed down at the face first
That $30 is almost worthless next to being a decorative piece, the blade is a rat tail tang, welded just below the the guard and poorly at that, I would not and do not use the $30 as a beater because there is a significant risk of that weld snapping and that blades going where ever it feels like.
The duster is zinc, same as the $20, and is more prone to breaking/shattering if you hit something hard enough with enough force. The metal between the fingers is also thicker much thicker which has it's own problems for some people like me, I've got big hands and my fingers get stuck at the joints and need a bit of effort and twisting to remove it from my hands. Its not a good knife if you have to use 2 hands and a lot of effort to release it from your hands.
I have the $150 one as well and it is a splendid piece, it is great though I have not unscrewed the blade to find if it is full tang or rat tang. The brass is durable and has the proper proportions to the original that it is easy grab and release with no complications.
To finish this review you need to unscrew these knives to see what the guts look like on the inside

I collect trench knives and have original 1917 and 1918 My 1918 is made in France by AU lion and was the only brand that saw service before the war ended, but many of the 1918s were issued in ww2, oddly enough (and accidentally I'm sure) the 20 dollar knife's grip isn't exactly incorrect, I see many original trench knives with the disk guard ground down on one or both sides by the soldier so it will ride on the belt better. Also, in most cases (not all) bayonets and knives were usually shipped blunt or semi-sharp, man GIs either didn't bother or didn't know how to sharpen them and since it was primarily a stabbing weapon just kept it as is.
Actually, according to Grandpa (he fought at Stalingrad) the best hand to hand melée is a sapper’s shovel. Sharpen the shovel’s blade and use it as a battle-axe. The advantage is that it does not stick. Lobotomize one enemy and move on to the next, assembly line fashion. Knives are for fine work, like cutting sentry throats. The shovel has to have a razor-edge. “Good and messy, that is what struck fear into the German Nazi horde.” Grandpa’s exact words.

This kind of trench knife was not used during ww1 as it was introduced to late but some French ones were, im not an expert forgotten weapons has a video about ww1 melee weapons so you can watch it.
Edit small arms fire is rifle, hand gun and machine gun fire.

The M1917 is triangle tipped because you can't patch up a triangle shaped stab wound
Also, waaaay cheaper to make. The ice pick type spike would also get through thick coats very easily.

@@opanababy its not uncommon for shrapnel wounds to be beyond repair either, its just less repeatable, considering shrapnel is for the most part random, as apposed to the knife that will cause a similar wound most, if not every time its used. I have no idea what that fuck face was on about…
Originals had bronze knuckles but I mean you covered it all very well. I have an original m1917 triangle bayonet style , m1918 triangle bayonet style and the 1918 au lion bronze knuckle knife version and the bronze knuckle is the best
I think Au Lion were brass, LF&C were bronze.

The blackening of the blade is patina. Soak the bare metal in boiled apple cider vinegar for this effect. Brilliantly protects the metal
The pommel pin is also used to crack a skull.

If made by windless on Atlantic Cutlery there is usually a option to have it sharpened. I believe a lot there products are of high quality but also bought by collectors and reenactors so you have to ask for sharpening

I had a 30 dollar one the exact one u had I unscrewed the lug in the back and stuck leather in that crack to keep the blade from wobbling or u could use glue or jb weld

I really love history an ww1 school kind glossed over in my day so that made me research everything enjoyed the vid bro
I got the $30 one. I use it to open letters and packages and stuff. Works great.
I think there was actually some use of early stainless steel for the blade of this particular pattern. I saw one in the mid 1990s in a museum in Montana with the blade stamped Queen Steel. That was an early stainless, but the Queen Cutlery Company called it Queen Steel to avoid the bad reputation stainless had at the time. Unfortunately I have no idea when that particular knife was made. I do remember thinking it looked much higher quality and rather more sinister than the cheap replicas then available, with a longer more tapered blade and pommel nut. It also had a pronounced ricasso like the $150 knife seen here, which looks quite historically accurate.
I love this design I wish one of the ecomomic but good mass produced forges, like Deepeeka of Windlass Steelcrafts made them.

Yeah, I'd like to see how long they last. Even though the chinese one doesn't look good at all, sometimes the chinese manufacturing surprises me with just enough functionality and robustness. Btw. if you're going to compare them, you have to compare multiple aspects: the blade, the brass knuckles and the spike (it isn't just about preventing the enemy from grabbing it, with overhead swing you can get pretty good damage out of that spike, especially when you aim for back or skull).

Fighting knives weren't meant to be sharpened. All they were intended to do is stab. And the pommel on the grip was called a "skull crusher". For doing over head blows.
so there were actually several iterations and designs of the Mark 1 treanch knife and one ofe the did have the cut down flat handguard this was done so that the knife would lay flatter against the body as a soldier crawled.

I was guessing it was an indian made knife. Windlass makes great blades at prices as fair as they get. They do ship their blades unsharpened so, among other reasons, the collector/user can put their own edge on it.
Havent gotten my hands on one of these yet i just cant catch them in stock but it is an absolute tool. Will last you a world war and a half.
The bluing also protects the knife from rusting.

My Great Grandfather fought in WW1. He served with the US Army 27th Div ( O'Ryan's Roughnecks) I have his complete uniform, rifle a M1917 Enfield and M1917 bayonet. In France (1918) at Ypres, I have a photo of him in battle dress he had a M1911 and bowie knife . I sadly didn't get the knife my cousin got that :( I asked my grandfather why he my great granddad never carried a " Knuckle Duster" and he replied, " Pop thought they were unwieldy and found a solid 8 inch Bowie to be more effective in " Trench raids."

Remember much was made on what they had on hand. War is like that. Most of the original knives I have seen look kind of rough. My war was in 1970. You bet I carried a knife. But since it had to serve for many purposes, hand to hand was only one, I chose the largest knife buck made. I still have it. The sheath looks like hell because we went through hell together. The blade has no appreciable wear though I kept it razor sharp. The black handle is covered with scars. My advice if you want to be period correct is carry two. A good working knife and one for hand to hand. Still I appreciate your video. I have very large hands and fingers. Thus knives with knuckle dusters are not always attractive. Taking out a sentry they can even get in the way. The 1917 actually discourages proper grip.. But any way have fun. Do avoid the real thing. There is no reset button. I am in pain every day from the bullet that killed me. (30 Cal. 7.62 x54) No joke, I bled out on the operating table. I still have the bullet. Sniper I think. Still good care has allowed me to come back from the dead and maybe buy the 150 dollar knife. Where do you order it?. Doc. K

It’s dull because ot is for stabbing, not for cutting. And the spike on the end is for offensive purposes, poking an opponents hand is maybe a secondary benefit, but it’s for cracking skulls not poking hands
