- Tarsar and Marsar are twin lakes in Kashmir. Tarsar lake is the main and bigger lake of the two. These alpine lakes are accessible by trekking from Aru valley in Pahalgam. Tarsar Marsar lake trek starts from Aru village in Aru valley near Pahalgam Kashmir. The trek is some 30 kms one way from Aru. These are some of the most beautiful lakes in Kashmir. Trekking in Kashmir is relatively less popular than Himachal and Uttarakhand. The most famous lakes trek in Kashmir is the Great Lakes trek from Sonmarg. But there are some 15 lakes near Pahalgam in Kashmir valley and every lake is accessible through trekking.

I had one question--is the trail from Aru to Tarsar well marked?
Can I easily find my way all by myself?
Thank you, well majority of the trek is recognisable as many trekkers and shepherds use the trail but there are spots in the open area where you might get confused, you can download a map app called Mapy.cz , and in it download the map of Jammu and Kashmir which will work without network on the trek

Normal sports shoes are also fine, but it’s always better if you have strong shoes on the treks

I started in the morning 6:45 am and came back by the evening 8 pm. But normally it takes 5-6 days to people

Beautiful Scenery, Mai Kashmiri Pandit hu, aur is lake se lagbad 70 km door rehta hu mujhe ek cheez samaj nai aati ki aap in veeran pahado pe akele jaane se darte nai ho kya ? Aisi jagaho pe Snow leopard aur Bear hote hai...aapko itni motivation aati kahan se hai aur aap akele chalne mai bor nai hote ho kya ?

Aru is a village while liderwat is an open meadow and campsite 10 kms from Aru

Even locals and ever tourism department didn't know about these lakes.

do you need any permission to trek in kashmir?
I guess in some places like Kashmir Great Lakes trek you need permission from forest or tourism office, but in Pahalgam I didn’t need any permission
