    I started out using regular Harley oil, then switched to full synthetic. I have used Screamin Eagle and now I’m going to try Mobil 1. I think all oils are generally good. Some subscribe to the idea that you should only run regular oil, others believe synthetic is the way to go. I think it’s personal preference. I change my oil, trans and crank oil frequently approximately every 3K miles.

    Ok so after a long talk with a shop owner who was sponsored in the 80’s running nitro meth bikes with hand built engines. The Harley internals are no different from the 70’s when they ran straight 60-70 weight oil. I’m talking about bearings and rods and protecting metal. Nothing new about protecting metal. The thicker oil protects the bearings best and where is fails is low temp starts. I’d rather ride above 50 degrees and not potentially damage my engine than be able to start my bike in 30-40 degree weather. Another advantage is with roller rockers, thinner oils can lead to the rollers getting so slick they don’t spin and wear abnormally. The thicker oil provides the “grip” for the rollers to spin.
    Now this info comes from San engine builder that’s been building since the 60’s this knowledge is priceless and he will debate with new Harley techs all day undefeated. His recommendation for my built 08 Electra is
    Lucas Straight 60 in engine
    Belray in the primary
    Redline in the trans
    (Type F Auto trans works good also)

    In a dry sump oil system the only oil in an engine is lubricating it the sump is seperate from the engine over filling sump does not lead to oil on crankshaft in a modern harley it takes away volume in oil tank that the engine breathes into leading to venting problems

    22 114 street glide special, torque cam 447. from new she was using several ounces oil per 1000 miles mobil 1 sythetic. I changed over to belray mineral and now I dont have to think about it. I'm 9000 miles into it and running steady no over use or blow by. Change every 3000

    • @joshramsey8450
      @joshramsey8450 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You said from new. So the oil usage was probably from break in. All the compression rings and oil wiper rings have to seat a bit into the cylinder walls. Even the valves and valve seats will slightly change shape and seat into eachother better. That’s why your gas mileage and power actually increases as you put more miles on the engine from new. And would explain small oil usuage and some blow by. New engines you’re actually supposed to use a certain break in oil that is pretty thin for the first like 500/1000, It lets all the mating surfaces grind into each other the slightest little bit just to get everything correctly seated, and then you change all oils and filters and run the oil of your choice going forward. It’s the best way to break in a new engine and give yourself the highest chance it lasts for a longg long time with no power or compression loss

    I ran my 2003 dyna lo rider with Harley synthetic oil in all 3 compartments engine, gear/ transfer case and transmission three in one as recommended by Harley Davidson, eliminate mistake in filling wrong fluid in engine or transmission, transfer case it’s a no brainer no problem I followed recommended levels, mileage intervals never had any issue no breakdowns to this day 2021 still running strong! They should call it Harley Davidson wonder lube 3 in 1

    Hello Gary, I’m new to your channel, very informative keep up the good work. I have a 2000 Fatboy 88ci. I ride very little, maybe a 1000 mil per year, we have snow for 6 months of the year. I use Amsoil in all three holes, I change the oil in all three holes very spring after the first run when it’s nice and hot, They say I’m wasting money by doing this. What are your thoughts on this ?
    Thanks
    Luis

      Thank you so much for the kind words glad you're enjoying the videos. 1st I would say I'm not a big fan of amsoil Not that it's bad oil I just don't like running it in a Harley Davidson motorcycle. As far as recommendations with only putting a 1000 miles on your bike I would definitely change all 3 oils at the beginning of the season just to get the moisture or condensation out of your eng. That builds up during the Winter. Hope this helps thanks Gary

      I used to sale amsoil but when ever put in a gasoline engine I would charge the oil then in the first 1000 miles would have to add a qt and also had pepple that bought it from me complain about that as well so got away from it also transmission going out and blam on amsoil so don't even think of using it anymore.

    I'm the lucky over of a '83 five speed shovel , the best engine oil you recommend would be Bel Ray V-Twin mineral , right ? which viscosity based on season temperature ?

  • @JCcanU
    @JCcanU ปีที่แล้ว

    The old Shovel and early EVO the Engine oil also went to the Clutch the oil pump pushed the oil to the engine then to the primary to the filter and to the oil can back to the pump . Harley Oil was still dirt cheap $1.50 a QT The same 20/50 did the clutch as the engine . I still use 20/50 for my clutch , They sell high dollar oils for the Primary . No one remembers the 20/50 went to the clutch .

And if so should I run the synthetic kind? I’m always super skeptical of running synthetic oil and I was told that the syn3 is actually only semi synthetic

    • @JCcanU
      @JCcanU ปีที่แล้ว +1

      85-140 is great if you live up north it will take longer to flow, I rather have a thick coat on in the winter then i light coat . Come summer that thick coat is still doing a good job . The Great Debate what oil is best lol Oil is oil with out it you burn up . I have 5 grand into a Build I use regular 20/50 in my engine EVO 1340 95 hp 85-140 in the trans and 20/50 in my clutch . I buy cheap oils Valvoline t4 Castrol t4 Full Syn last longer , Con oil is fine just change it more often .
