@@Hhhhhgggihgdd I've seen several videos where they suggest changing the o-ring plus using a dab of teflon paste. Never heard teflon tape tho. Just a back up, i guess, in case you pinch the o-ring unknowingly.
Good insight Doc. Had not thought of checking how the oil drained before loosening the filler plug. I had had issues in the past on a 2009 FLHTCU with excess oil in the air cleaner. Had the breathers changed. Still did what I thought was excess. Never got that resolved, but don't have that bike anymore. The other thing I noticed in your video was the drain pan. Did not look like it was going to hold all the oil that it was going to drain. Didn't see the pan toward the end of the video. Thank you for your videos. You pass on good insight.
Doc you da man. I spent many years in the U.S. Military and afterwards in the aircraft maintenance field. The “It’s good enough for the government” has never actually been around aircraft maintenance. Anyways my point is that I must say that your professionalism is impeccable. Especially your attention to detail. You treat each bike like it’s your own with safety in mind always. I dig that. As motorcyclist we are doing something that’s risky already, probably even more risky than flying, so there is no need to cut corners, do something half a$$ or not up to par. You my friend do none of those things. Trust me my first bike was a 49 Pan, Rigid, Suicide and boy did I ride by the seat of my pants and work on the bike similarly. Not anymore. @@LowCountryHarleyDavidson Thank you as well, Doc. May I ask if your father is still around? I've heard you mention him numerous times in your videos. I can only imagine he had such a positive influence on you and how you approach things today. Thanks again.
Just did my change and thanks for this tip. I am now certain my breathers are working properly. If I might add I used a inch pound torque wrench and did the math. So 17 ft lbs x 12= 204 inch pounds. One doesn't need 2 wrenches. Thanks again Doc!
That’s a great oil change tip. I’ll do that, thank you. Another one I heard is when you’re changing the primary oil, take the derby cover off first then drain the oil. That way if something goes wrong and you can’t get the derby cover off you still have oil in the primary till you can fix the problem.

Thank you. I have a crankcase breather setup with the braided line going to a separate filter back toward the rear of the frame. I will take a look at all that this weekend. Good Tip.
Clever. My 2000 wide glide is due for oil change at 85,000 and I'll be sure to do that little check up item. I have ran only Amsoil since the second oil change. I recently checked the cam tensioners and they are half worn down. I will be replacing them just for safetys sake. I'm hoping the synthetic is good for the breather elastic as well. I will try to remember to get back here and let you know what I found.
Good tip... I've been struggling with this blow-by problem. Every time I ride hard there's oil on my case below the air filter. Running 20w-50 at half-filled, and it's still a major problem.
Thumbs-Up #2.9K-PLUS I am, Friday morn 28 June 2019! I recently (finally) found and bought my first Sportster, an 883, and I watch it drain the entire time to check the color of the oil. Hi Doc , I have a few Harley’s that I drive about 500 miles a year. I know it’s recommended to change engine oil once a year but draining gold new oil seems like a waste can you give me your opinion how I should handle this. Thanks for all the great videos your the best !!!!
Depending where you live. If your mileage is that low and the oil looks that good. I suggest you change oil every spring at the start of riding season. While in storage over the winter condensation can form inside the motor and drip into oil. This oil must be removed after getting the bike up to operating temp...Doc
Hello doc I have a 2011 Honda shadow 750 RS I change my own oil an never noticed this next time I’ll pay more attention does this motorcycle has the oil separator also or just Harleys thank you I appreciate your videos great tech tips
Yea all good but I have had this problem with oil floods in my air cleaners from very low kms !what is the life of these umbrella valves and why do some many techs and hog people say you got too much oil topped up?? Or is Harley avoiding something with Warranty??
Thanks a lot for the tip DOC. Now, let's assume that after I checked this, and the cap was closed, the oil was running out fast and the plastic thingy was bad... what's the name of the plastic thingy so I can replace if needed? Thanks a lot again.

I think it's just another ploy from a dealership to get you to come in to think that your breathers need to be changed,, even though they did update the umbrella valves and breathers to a new two piece, which actually does work a lot better, but yes you have to pull the tank and only the valve cover have to come off,, do it yourself pull the tank pull the rocker covers buy the upgraded breathers and save yourself a few hundred dollars in labor,
On my 2008 Rocker w/ 96 cu in engine, I'm having lots of miniature air bubbles in my oil. I using synthetic amsoil. It's hard to get proper reading most of the time on dipstick. What's causing this ?
Your bike is a living-breathing creature! Not really but it is a big blender inside. Just like in the kitchen. Turn on a blender with liquid, ie protein shake, and turn it on. Air mixes with the liquid. Does Amsoil oils promise a “bubble Free” environment?🤷♂️…..Doc

Hi Doc, my head breathers on my 103 have a closed end bolt in both of them. Someone before me added a different air filter and the breathers are closed off. Is that a bad idea? There are no problems with the bike and no leaks. But I've never seen this set-up before.
Doc, I love your videos! Quick question... I see and a lot of videos about changing the transmission oil in a Heritage Softail explaining that they use a hex key to take out the drain plug, then when the drain plug is out, I see that it also has hex head. Then they use a socket to reinstall it. I'm not sure if the plug in my 05 Heritage Softail Classic has such a plug, but just in case it does, what size socket would I use on that? Thanks again for all your really good videos!
