    The lack of respect by the announcers for the guys that made the team was really bad. They implied that Deady made the team because he colluded with Simpson. But if the plan was for Simpson to set a very fast pace, that’s not what happened. Nobody went with Simpson and the pace was actually very slow. Deady closed strong and made the team.

      Mark was hanging back, looking easy the whole way. 8th place with a 200 to go. Charles Marsala and Deady ran neck and neck in training and racing that year. They also had a 1:46 800 guy on IU team, along with guys running for the Track Club that were sub 4 guys (Gwain Guy and James Murphy). A lot of credit to Coach Sam Bell and to Mark's training partners. Mark Deady was strong, smooth and consistent all year.

    Richie Martinez placed 5th... 1. 4 seconds from 1st. My friend and competition in high school track.
