JOYO R-20 KING OF KINGS | Quick ROYAL Tones (no talk)

  • The King of Kings, as the name would imply, is Joyo's take on a classic dual overdrive, tone-filled pedal, but with a much shorter waiting list than the pedal it's inspired on. The twin circuits themselves are based off the classic Marshall Bluesbreaker, a legendary pedal that has inspired multiple pedal builders who continue to take the old circuit and adapt it to their own interpretation. With switchable soft and hard clipping diodes for each channel, and the possibility of stacking both channels for either a volume boost (channel B running clean) or a massive, endless sustain lead tone (channel B clipping), the King of Kings is a massively versatile pedal with a surprisingly low price point.
    Thank you to Joyo for sending me this pedal - this one is going on my board.

    Every gear review video should be like this. Less talking and more playing! Man, this pedal sounds awesome, which is all I need to get out of a video! I am currently on the "King of Tone" waiting list with about a year to go, but it's been an extremely long wait. I might have to look into this pedal while I wait out the rest of the year, which might turn into two years!

    Judging by the comments, most people are not aware of what pedal this one is attempting to clone . Its a copy of the analogman . This isn’t a chug pedal . It kinda sounds like it does what it is supposed to

    Good demo vid. My only issue is that I would have liked to hear how some power chords/heavier, more "chuggy" riffs sound with the distortion turned up. Might not be your style tho, and that's ok; just something I'm usually looking for in demo videos for pedals with any kind of distortion, or high gain overdrive (cuz I'm more of a metal/hard rock/punk kinda dude).
    Either way, I think I'm sold on it. Got a Deluxe Big Muff on its way from Sweetwater as we speak, and just saw this pop up in my Amazon suggestions today. Thinking of building an overdrive/distortion/fuzz centered board and that seems like a good fit with the Big Muff I'm getting. Will probably add a heavier distortion pedal of some sort too to round it out. Was thinking of calling it my "Simply the Beast" board, or the "50 Shades of Gain" board.🤘

    You say that channel A is identical to B? Is that true? I thought that it's the basic overdrive and A works as a boost? BTW: thanks for this very useful demo.

    • @PedalPlatform
      @PedalPlatform  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Dizzy, thank you! Yes, both channels are identical, which allows you to configure them as you wish, and not be tied to having the boost before of after your gain. The only thing that's fixed is that channel A goes into channel B. How you configure each one of them is then up to you: no clipping for boost, soft clipping for overdrive, hard clipping for distortion, both clippings for a total mess 🤣

      @DizzyKrissi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @PedalPlatform
      @PedalPlatform  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're talking mostly "clean" boost, it has more than enough output on tap - and you can stack both sides, which is more than enough to make a mess if you so wish. I know I do! 😁

      Thank you for the kind comments! 🙏🏻I don't know what specific pedal is being used there, but it sounds to me like a mid pushed, very compressed overdrive. You should be able to get close with the Joyo, but a good part of that sound also comes from the 335 😁

    Why edit the audio with reverb when demonstrating a pedal?

    • @PedalPlatform
      @PedalPlatform  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great question - one that I've asked myself a few times, and therefore has a bunch of answers:
      - the first part of the answer, though, is a minor correction, and part of the larger picture: the reverb wasn't edited in - I was already playing into it (Plethora X3), and at a point in the video I actually reach out to add some delay on top of that (and I point it out in the video, because in my mind, delay can change the sustain characteristics more than a moderate amount of reverb);
      - from a physics point of view: most of us don't live in an anechoic world, and listening to any instrument being played without any room around it isn't a very pleasant experience. Since I don't own a great recording room and therefore play and record almost exclusively with IRs, the sound that gets to the "tape" is dry as a bone unless I add reverb at some point in the chain, which takes me to...
      - ...from a personal point of view, and unless I'm doing really heavy riffs with heavy muting, I don't like playing dry, and I like it even less to hear it played back (and even in the heavy riffs situation, I'm probably going to have a touch of "studio" reverb going);
      - in this video, the exploratory stuff I'm playing and desperately trying not to eff' up, in my mind calls for a slightly livelier sound than the bone dry / studio ambience, and one can actually argue that this is therefore more representative of some real conditions the pedal is going to be used in;
      - ... but I also understand that drowning stuff in reverb can sometimes be a hindrance to listening to what the pedal is really doing. The flip side to that is that adding a bit of reverb doesn't affect the characteristic sound as much as playing it with a completely different guitar / amp - and if we're going down that road then might as well be demo'ing pedals with signal generators and straight into a recording interface instead of guitars and amps - because that might be the only way of showing what the pedal is really doing to a fully characterized, repeatable, reproducible signal...
      ... and that's part of my answer. As you can see, I thought about it before doing it that way, weighed pros and cons, and in the end decided to press that reverb switch. Maybe next time I won't, who knows? 🤷🏻‍♂️😉

    • @Mr.Steve-O
      @Mr.Steve-O ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@PedalPlatform The right answer is because reverb is a basic component of the tone food group. This was a great demo !! Thanks for putting this together, you captured the essence of this pedal and the reverb is just icing on the cake. Not sure who plays without reverb but then again there's always that one guy 😂😂 😂

    • @PedalPlatform
      @PedalPlatform  ปีที่แล้ว

      🤣 I do understand the question, though.
      And in a way it's good that we're talking about reverb, otherwise I'd have to say that I recorded this with a $150 amp (Joyo Jackman II, clean channel), and that might cause a bit of a stir! 😁

  • @peter333
    @peter333 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Some gain pedal demos just lack heavier playing, power chords, maybe some chugging , and this is a double gain pedal, it's screaming for heavier stuff (can you hear it scream 'hit me! hit me!"). But there's too much fiddling about and excuses for messing up. We're not here to find out how you play, we're here to check out the pedal and to hear what it can do, not just Santana solo style all over the fretboard but for heavier riffing style too, so we can decide if it's worth spending money on. Nothing personal and no offense, just some constructive criticism. Having said that: you do cover every aspect of the pedal (except for heavy riffing).
