    Flavio canto is also a bjj black belt. He used to train around the same time bjj was starting to become popular at rio de janeiro. At a time most bjj academy's had a rivalry where they saw each other almost as enemy's, he was welcome at every bjj academy. Many well know BJJ athletes speak highly of him. He is admired at both judo and bjj community here in brazil.

    Canto Was a beast. There is a legend that , when he came over to train in Kodokan, he submited a lot od Japanese Judokas when training Ne Waza, one after the other. Tks for the excelent breakdown CHadi

    A good newaza game opens up many possibilities in Judo. Whereas many Judoka go into turtle or roll onto stomach and wait for referee to stand them back up, Brazilians often welcome the newaza fight. Travis did an amazing job of escaping Canto's pin and submission attacks, even before he studied BJJ.

      What bjj guys do in competition is what judo guys do in training newaza in the gym by starting on the knees and includes pins

    Judo combined Tachi- and Ne-Waza is a thing of beautiful poetry in motion. It's a shame that the IJF don't really see it that way. I would much rather see a regular throw that is not really an Ippon, continue on the ground, than half-measured sacrifice throws being essentially guard pulling.

    • @Chadi
      @Chadi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah some are clearly used as a guard pull

    Awesome video as always!!
    But at 10:32 it wasn’t kouchi, it was kosoto gake, canto right leg hooked stevens’s left leg (and also the right leg) from the outside. It is clearer at 12:29. In this way he falls on top of stevens already in position for a perfect transition into tate shiho.
    Thank you for the awesome channel and contents.

    Too bad that on judo competitions judges do not give you enough time to work your ground game. It hapenned to me several times that judge would stop fight just before I manage to pull some choke or juji gatame. Thats why I love BJJ.

If any English speaking judoka should get credit then maybe Neil Adams - he taught quite a few ways to do it before DVD, youtube or the UFC, I still have it on a VHS tape - although it existed long before that. Did travis stevens tapout from pain or just from the pin. It looks like Canto didn't have his head tucked for a tight arm triangle. Looked kind of loose. Did he tap to end the match or tap from pain? really confused about this

      Sevens taped out of pain. He was either strangled or armlocked and he had to tap quickly.

    Gotta love judo, real life application, contact, dignity, usefulness, aikijutsu origin but so different that that useless tangents they call jujitsu. Aikido does have some usefulness, but you never see aikido sparring, that would be judo!! But in real life and multiple attack you have to have good striking, that’s what I love about Hapkido and taekwondo, along with judo

    Is this a joke? Travis Steven lost a judo match to a Canadian (does that sound tuff), and never got gold in the Olympics. And under John Danaher he hasn't accomplished ANYTHING IN 18 MONTHS! maybe someday he could beat someone on the ground. Flavio Canto is the only Brazilian to be proud to be 1st class Judo because of his 2nd class BJJ. You know Flavio only became champ as back up to his football career? Both of their best accomplishment is being second best, a jack of 2 trades master of none. Winning Gold in the Pan am is 2nd to getting a job at Arbys. At least Arbys you get free cheesish sauce that if you snort you contemplate life. Its like becoming a French citizen, what did that really accomplish? a crazy wife, shit diet, a car and soon to be riot? I wish them both luck in their future as used car sales men. Hopefully someday they will learn the power of Dim Mak, maybe Ameri-Do-Te, or at least Chi.

      What are you on about? Stevens is a Silver Olympic medalist, Canto is a Bronze Olympic medalist.
      Stevens has beaten many elite BJJ players, including Tim Spriggs, Jamie Canuto, etc. He took one of the Miyao’s back and almost won. Go watch his Copa Podio matches, the only one to handle him was Rodolfo Vieira in his prime.
      I’m a huge Canto fan, but your ranting is absolutely ridiculous.
