So sorry for your loss. As a breeder of 15 years and like yourself, I have several litters a year. I know keeping those gasping puppies separate from the rest of the litter seems the right thing to do but I was told by an "old timer" and shortly after a repro vet years ago that putting those gasping pups up against mom and encouraging them to nurse will help move that amniotic fluid out of their airways etc. It also will help stimulate them with the puppy movement and the dam licking them. I haven't lost a gasping puppy since we started doing that and administering plasma subQ. It's also a good idea to have Dex on hand for pups like this to open up their airway. Some breeders will use a drop of black coffee if they don't have Dex on hand. Sometimes though as we all know, there's nothing we can do and tough things just happen. It was heartbreaking to see that little guy struggle to breath. Then the bonus puppy showed up and I cheered! I had a feeling it would go this way. That bonus puppy will be one of the best dogs ever ❤️

Most of the time the anxiety is under control! It's not bad. Births are always challenging. But most of the time its calm cool collected! =)

We had a surprise puppy on the x-ray 4 days before she gave birth. Our biggest puppy was hiding the tiniest puppy on the x-ray. Originally we thought we were having 7 chiweenies and were surprised to find out there were 8. They were so tiny, everyone was surprised that they are here and thriving. I'm glad I waited 5 hours to make sure we got the x-ray, super important. I'm sorry for your loss, it's extremely stressful and disheartening.

Waiting for update on that tiny pup! I've had them gain exponentially more than the ones that are typical birth weight and actually catch up or surpass littermates-but these first few days are pins and needles! I'm sure you are weighing 2x/day and placing on rear teat for maximum opportunity. Can't wait for the new video update

So glad the little one was okay! I have a soft spot for the smaller-than-expected pups! (As evidenced by the fact that I’m typing this one handed while Nadine sleeps in my other arm like the 22 pound baby she is haha.)

Aww, my heart breaks for you guys! I understand that's par for the course, but I can only imagine how hard it was to have lost the little guy. That's surprising I guess that the one with issues was not even the littlest one.
We just had 6 puppies, and the littlest guy definitely grew proportionately. He's still not cought up with his siblings, but he's gained about as steadily as them. He's gone from 11.4 ounces at birth to just over 4 pounds at three weeks. I hope your little guy grows well too!

We're just a family, so this has all been so very new to us. I just had our little guy in my lap for about 10-15 minutes earlier. Now they're getting a little older, 3 weeks, I like to give them cuddle time. He was stretched out, snoozing, and started growling in his sleep just like his mama. It cracked me up!
When he was born, she gave him a bit of extra attention. She had that sack off like lightning and had him rolling all around to stimulate him.
We feel very fortunate. She's a great mama, and they're great pups! Their dad is black, and she's silver, so can't wait to see if any fade. Love them as they are now, little black balls of poodle fluff!
Sorry for rambling, but videos like yours have been quite reassuring and comforting, even when they're bittersweet like yours, with the loss tempered by the bonus pup.

Sad he passed. It was heartbreaking watching him try to breathe. So strange though, a puppy that looked big and healthy didn't make it, yet the smallest puppy who looked concerning on the xray is doing great. Cheering on for that little dude!

Oh...I'm just heartbroken that the little guy didn't make it...I guess nature takes it's course. So happy about the "bonus" puppy...Everything happens for a reason. Can't wait to see how they grow...especially the littlest one.

As a breeder as well, it is very difficult when you get a puppy acting like the one you had, and you want to try everything for them, but experience says that there is most likely something inside that was just not developed.... Thanks for showing every part of breeding, the good and the bad. Sorry for the loss, because we do love every one of them and anticipate their arrival.
When puppies come out like that, they need to be stimulated like crazy and held nose towards the floor to drain the fluid from their airways. If you leave them alone, they just give up and pass.
The only thing he needed was to be pinched (giving their scruff a HARD pinch gives them a spike of adrenaline, which gets their breathing and circulation going) and held skin to skin for a little while; I've brought around dozens of puppies struggling even worse than him and they've grown up to be normal, healthy dogs.

Do you have an incubator and oxygen concentrator for struggling puppies as a Frenchie breeder most of us have to have them as frenchie babies sometimes need a lot of extra care to be ok.

They small puppy probably still had some fluid stuck . What I do I use the baby mucus syringe and suck all the fluid from the mouth and the nose . If that doesn’t work (in TH-cam ) I searched how to revive a puppy and followed there steps.. it has worked for me but sometimes we unfortunately loose some.

They eat it. Good iron for them!
Not sure if your vet would be willing to send you a syringe of dopram but worth asking about. Every vet I've worked with for the last 11 years has given every newborn puppy (usually through C-section) 0.1mL of dopram sublingual to stimulate respiration. Most don't need it but it can really help the preemie or struggling pup. Unfortunately sometimes it doesn't save them but as a vet tech and breeder I always have it during whelping just in case.

Absolutely! I also agree with another comment about continuing stimulation and pinching the scruff. Definitely ask your vet what they recommend but that's how we bring around C-section puppies at our clinic. You can hold them face down so gravity helps move fluid out of the lungs, you already have the bulb syringe handy I see and those are wonderful for getting mucus out of mouth and nose, and vigorously rubbing and patting the puppy. There is also slinging but I would definitely ask your vet about that one. Some new vets no longer use that method and the old school vets I worked for showed me how but definitely don't want to try without being shown by a veteran. Perhaps if you have a C-section on one of your girls you could ask the vet to have one of their techs show you how vigorously they sometimes have to stimulate pups. I was super gentle my first few C-sections and I felt like I would break or hurt the pups but like my vet said birth is not a gentle process. Unfortunately sometimes nothing you do can save them but it's always nice to add new techniques to your bag of tricks. Love that you show so much about your program and not just the cute puppies. I raise corgis and I'm in love with your whelping rooms. Also can't wait for our order of your potty trays to come in hopefully we get them in time for our next litter. I hope they work for us as well as they have for you.

@@DoodlesofNC I recently heard of seasoned breeders using it to ease pain, strengthen dogs uterus and speeding labor process. I used it for my first time momma along with calcium paste and thought this was easy delivery!

Are the dogs that are used for breeding screened for sub valvular aortic stenosis? Addison's Disease? And the puppies?
Good evening! They get tested for every genetic disease that has been found using Paw Print Genetics. I don't believe Addisons has been added to that yet. Also cardiac exams are done on each mom to meet the OFA standards. So we would know if a mom had the stenosis! Thank you for specific questions!

That puppy on the heating pad is having agonal respirations, which means he is near death. He needed oxygen and better respiratory support.

Do you ever try oxygen when the babies are struggling?
I haven’t, how would you do this?
I’ve seen other breeders place the hose from an oxygen concentrator into the bottom of a plastic drinking cup. You would poke a hole in the cup. You would lay the puppy in the cup and have the hose turned on low. I’ve seen puppies breathing like that and after being on oxygen for the first 24 hours they make it. Just some ideas to help puppies that would have weak lungs. I know you can get incubators that have oxygen that runs through them. Maybe something you could look into. James on a you tube channel called “Love My Pups” has videos about it. You could also call them. Real nice people!
