  • One of the most common puppy potty training struggles we hear from puppy owners is that they take their puppy outside and then the puppy pees immediately when they come back in! In this video, Instructor Steve is going to talk about a simple training plan that will help you to avoid some of the common mistakes that new puppy owners make when it comes to potty training. For some puppies, it will be an easy process to learn not to have accidents indoors, but for others, there needs to be better information! And since we want our dogs to get the best information possible, having a game plan will help you AND your puppy to be successful!

Use verbal cue....like "go pee pee", when she goes pee pee....say "good dog" and immediately take them inside. This makes them know what they were out there for.

This is what I do with my longhair dachshund & it works great. I usually say, "Potty potty potty," then when she does her business, I praise her and say, "Good girl, potty potty!!" I'm sure it would garner some weird looks from strangers if out in public, but it sure works well. lol

For current or future puppy owners, take note of what he says about a "properly-sized crate" because it is imperative to do this. My mistake early on with my puppy was getting her a crate that I knew would be too small or just right when she gets 6-8 months old because I knew she would rapidly grow (she is a Bullmastiff). The issue was the crate was so large that she had options of relieving herself in her crate while I did not have eyes on her and sitting or lying down on the opposite end of the crate. Once I recognized my mistake, it was too late, and she had gotten used to going in her crate even when I got a proper-sized crate. It took me almost two years before she was fully house-trained.

Wait... Piper is MY pup's name!! I'm pleased to say that I've watched so many McCann dog training vids, including abt potty-training, that everything in this video was familiar to me even if I'm not always good at catching puppy in the act. I ended up buying a $3 whiteboard to put on my fridge to keep track of all the pees and poops one day to get a sense of when they might happen the next day. No way I could keep all that in my head! Good luck everybody. This puppy business was much more work than I had imagined! Hitting the 20-week mark now and noticing we are turning a corner with the potty training a bit and every bit helps 🙄😅

My Chihuahua mix screamed, panicked, and vomited, peed, and pooped in his crate, repeatedly, when I tried crate training. I gave up on the crate & took him outside every half hour to potty. He learned quickly but 6yrs later still pees on specific spots in the house. I'm cleaning with enzyme cleaner daily, so frustrating, but I'm glad he's mostly going outside.

I've read that puppy accidents can continue up to one year. Their learning isn't a straight line + adolescent hormones can make them forget things as they mature. Don't punish - ignore mistakes if you don't catch them. Uh-uh if you catch them, then take outside quickly + praise. Don't stress dog. Stay on a schedule to ensure success. Is your dog getting enough ex ercise? Is there any change stressing your dog(new schedule, housemate, new food, etc)?

We just became a guardian family to a 2 year old dog. She has been resistant to eliminate when we take her out and seems to "hold it" and is definitely not going regularly as she did with the family before us. I have recently tried just standing in one place when we take her out because it's obvious that she's very distracted but when I stood still in place she sort of copied me. I stood still for 15 minutes and she did the same and she absolutely has to go potty as she hasn't gone at all this morning. I know there will be an adjustment period as we are new to her, but how can I help her with this? She's also not very treat motivated at this time. Thank you for any tips

    • @Hashdollars
      @Hashdollars 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Try keeping it under five minutes outside
Go outside give a quick go pee or whatever command you use for it and wait up to five minutes only
If they go treat or acclaim reward them and if they don’t go right back in and then play a minute or two to distract them and take them right back out for under four minutes
You want them to get associated with going out is exactly the time to release themselves.
Not a time to fool around or go play

I’m being proactive and doing all of these steps. I’ve just adopted my puppy from the pound. She’s used to going “inside” where she sleeps inside their big kennel/room they get. I literally walk around for at least 30 mins each time and she just does not want to go outside. I don’t know what I should do. Also I did put her I. The crate at night and she pooped in the crate where she sleeps. Part of that of course that she’s used to it. It’s not her fault. I’m not sure if I just keep doing what I’m doing and eventually she will get it when she’s ready or if I need to change what I’m doing? Btw she is 5 months and I think she is pitty/ lab mix

I put papers, there and he picks them up and chews them. I put him in his kennel and he barks until I turn him loose. He’s barked for 8 hours straits even when I take him out to try point on his paper.

So its more enthusiastic peeing. Any tips would be very much appreciated! He already walks her before visits, but she still pees when enthusiastic.

Ooh, excitapee. Honestly, the way to deal with this is to stop your friends dog from getting excited. Usually you should ignore the dog until she calms down. Then you can interact with her as long as she remains calm. That's the only real way to help with this. Or, a diaper.

unfortunately my 4 month old dog uses a few of her crate as a toilet. She stopped going in the crate she sleeps in - for the most part. The problem started day one when I picked her up at the airport ... she was feed a little food and immediately when I hit the busy highway she started crying... I couldn't stop to let her go outside so she pooped in her crate. Since then she doesn't have a lot of respect for her crates. However she stopped going in the crate she sleeps in. I have a crate in the car and it's 50/50% chance of her pooping in it and the one in the kitchen is large wire crate (I've had it for other pets - not sure if she can smell that. FRUSTRATED!

My biggest concern about getting a puppy is how do you interrupt all this training when life intervenes? For example, sure I can take a week or whatever off when the puppy first comes home, but what happens after that? I know the simple but not so simple answer is that someone needs to be available each day for the puppy, but I can’t imagine everyone is able to accommodate that? I’m planning to get my first puppy (but not my first dog or other animal) in the near future and I want to train myself as best as possible so I can be a good trainer for my puppy!

I haven't found a noise that will startle and interrupt my puppy's accidents fast enough that I can get to her, especially when she's inside the play pen and I'm outside, I can't get there in time. I've tried a funny noise with my mouth, I've tried clapping, yelling "no", she looks at me but continues to pee or poop where she is... I wonder if she's learning that when she potties on the floor I start running to give her attention and that's actually reinforcing it. Should I leave her in the crate the whole time I'm not monitoring closely instead of free inside the play pen?

My dog gets so nervous whenever she goes outside. She's from Arkansas and we adopted her in NYC and I'm assuming the city makes her terrified. She completely shuts down whenever I take her outside. She doesn't eat. She doesn't potty. She doesn't play. She doesn't even look at you. She tries to runaway when she gets outside.
