  • I visit Davidstow Moor on Bodmin Moor and have a look at the remains of the former RAF Station there.

This was really interesting- thank you Paul! It’s sad to see these buildings abandoned but good that we can imagine how they were when they were being used. Beautiful foals and ponies!

Thank you Louise! Yes, it was my daughter that spotted the ponies and the foals at the far end of the runway. I filmed them at a distance using my telephoto lens, so as not to disturb them. I think that some of the foals were very young! It is a shame that the buildings have become so neglected, but good that there is a nearby museum that tells you the history about it. It has an eerie air about it (Davidstow Moor) and it is often shrowded in mist and fog - but not on the day I was there! Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care, Paul.

What an amazing site. So much history with the RAFAL and Motors port. Now it's just been left to mother nature.
Beautiful camera work Paul. And an excellent commentary explains everything

Microlites and gliders seem more in keeping with the tranquil surroundings of that delightful reservoir high on Bodmin Moor. The sound of the wind and lapping of the waves and the sight of ponies grazing, made this a very enjoyable video. I could imagine I was there!. Thank you.

Thanks for investigating & sharing the history of the airfield & the area. The little beach at the reservoir was great, love the sound of the water. The aerial shots really helped to show the scale of the site.

Great video. Both my Grandparents were stationed at RAF Davidstow Moor and I love visiting there. Also, my dad taught me to drive there when I was about 10 in his MG montego! Great memories. Thank you.

      Thank you!
Yes, I think a lot of people in North Cornwall learnt to drive here - and still do.
Thank you for your kind words. It is a very photogenic location.
      Cheers,
      Paul

love this ! always been intrigued by RAF Davidstow, glad to see you've done a video on it :) All your videos are professional, but I can see how much more experienced you've become in doing them, which is great to see, keep up the good work Paul and thank you for the content!

I'm amazed this reservoir has its own waves and the beach part made me smile - agree it makes it sound very much like the seaside.
Really interesting to hear about the history, it doesn't look like a place for Formula 3 now 🙂

Yes, I was very suprised to see those waves too! A place with so much atmosphere. No, I think that they would struggle to run any type of motorsport race on that surface now! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Paul.

That was very enjoyable and so packed with information that I watched it twice as there was so much to take in. We haven’t had rain here in over 2 weeks and not much predicted so I am expecting drought restrictions soon.( hope our reservoir is full up!)
I read somewhere that all RAF deserted airfields are haunted ( at night)- so sad. But at least there is a museum there to remember all the personnel that served. Yes, please give it a visit! The history of the motor circuit was surprising as such a long way from any large population though as you said ideal for noisy pursuits!! Thanks.

Thank you Diana. Yes, it does have a special atmosphere. I was based on a Cornish airfield when I was in the RAF in the 1980s. It was said that a Polish pilot (The Polish Air Force were based there during WWII) could sometimes be seen late at night exiting through the wall of the MT Hangar. His Spitfire crashed one foggy night upon returning from a recce mission. I never saw him, but you could definitely 'feel' something about the place. Thanks for watching! Paul

Thanks for the reply. It is so unusual that the deserted RAF stations have these phenomena - I just come across articles mentioning this now & then. I didn’t realise that functioning bases experienced this too!

Hi , many thanks for this video , very nostalgic for me - in about 1962 when I was 8 , Dad took me for my first driving lesson in his car at Davidstow airfield. He was a police patrol car driver , and we lived at Bodmin in the police Houses up the hill behind the old police station.
I was unaware of the formula one racing that went on there , so informative.
Any more updates due on the Stroudwater ? Hoping to visit with our narrowboat ( bucket list )
    - Bernard

      Thank you Bernard.
No more updates to report since my last update video (no 14) on the Stroudwater and T&S Canals. Planning permission has not been approved to complete the missing mile. There is an appeal hearing in September so hopefully then. The aviation fuel pipeline and Walk Bridge replacements have both been put back to 2024 at the earliest, according to the latest edition of The Trow magazine, which arrived yesterday. I was more than a bit disappointed to read that.
Thanks so much for your recollections of Davidstow Airfield - it is certainly an eerie place!
      Take care, Paul 🙂👍

Hi Paul, what an interesting place so many different aspects too it. I'll have to ask my brother-in-law about it he used to be based nearby at Newquay I think. They live nearby in Wadebridge, so that water is for them!!
I can remember hiking in the New Forest across what appeared to be moorland until suddenly you came across the concrete of the old RAF Beaulieu airport, it's clearly marked on the map, or was and easily distinguished on Google maps.
The Cornwall at war museum looks like an interesting place to visit. You got some great clips of the overflow on the dam and the abandoned buildings and wild life!!
Great idea from Nicolle to go there, well done.
    Have a great week

@@westcountrywanderings I can understand it being eerie. A few weeks ago I went down see an abandoned farmhouse (it appears in the video that I did). There was a strange sound every so often which made me jump. It turned out to be a gate that was moving in the breeze!! I think when you are in these places and alone then your senses and imagination become heightened!!

The aircraft shown is a Bristol Beaufighter which despite being comparitively uncelebrated struck fear into both the Germans and Japanese being also based in Devon at Chivenor and Bolt-Head near Salcombe

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ah, yes, I have seen the Bolt Head site - there used to be an extensive underground complex there (near Salcombe). I see that the Bristol Beaufighter was manufactured in Filton, South Gloucestershire. Another of their planes' names (Brabazon) lives on as the name of a new housing and retail developement (and a new railway station coming soon too) in the area. Thanks for watching and commenting Stephen!

Yes that's right on my doorstep
      It's a pity Bristol Aerospace doesn't
      have a complete Beaufighter, there
being only 2 complete airframes in
the UK at Hendon and East Fortune
      (these having been purchased back
      following Portuguese service)
      Thanks again 👍
