Great vid mark, I was a member of Cornwall flying club for many years and have flown over the building many times not realizing its history - well done !
Great video!! Wonder why so many ambulance call buttons 🤔 would be great to see more of these "secret Cornwall" videos. Loved the one you done a few years ago on communication!
There was a staff lounge with licensed bar - next to the canteen ....i remember it was there in the 90's because my uncle worked there and they had large christmas dinner parties each year and families got invited ...they often did a bonfire night display as well .
Yes indeed... It had a well stocked bar area which had good use. It even remained in use, hidden by a pull over screen, long after BT management had declared itself a 'dry company'! I worked there myself from 1994-1999 so I'm sure I probably knew your uncle well. What was his name?
The Boxer network manual shown on your video is the servicing and maintenance for over proposed secure comms' link to over 200 RAF sites in Your country. BT telecom got the contract. Probably military stuff used secretly on masts of radio stations and other structures.
I always wondered what was in there. My Uncle has the farm the opposite side of the road and has had for over 50 years. He had a hammond organ but the radio staion always interfered with it and any radios they had on aswell.
Man I loved this place me and my sister were really lucky back in the 1980s my dad worked here and he used to smuggle us in over night when he didn’t have a baby sitter. We had the best time exploring :)
17:47 was full of the latest transmitters back in the late 80s and a microwave proof room. With a massive safe like door which was really cool :) remember shitting my sister in there 😂
Great video Mark. Im intrigued by anything like this. I wonder what the people were like when this was up and running for all those years? Fascinating!
My Dad ran the stores there all his working life. He will be 91 this year. We lived in Beam Villas which were built solely to house employees and were just up the road from the Radio Station. They're still there now.
@@maddypark1 Hi, Is your dad's name Alister former County Councillor. If it is, he has my admiration for protecting that avenue of lime trees along the road when entering Bodmin from Lanivet!
It is on the Goss Moor... so quite high ground with very little building obstructions around it to affect the signal. Also, the ground is also quite boggy. Wet ground is a good conductor and is ideal in helping the propagation of the HF ground or aka surface radio waves with lower attenuation than with dry ground. The station is also not far from the sea, so again, there is very little distance of land before the signal travels over water, reducing the attenuation again.
It's also good that not many people lived too close to it ... the high power signals caused a lot of radio interference and induced currents. The metal security fence had a gate in it.... Open it and a spark would jump across for to the induced current. In the radio station we could turn off the fluorescent tube lighting.... but they would continue to glow. Some cars used to pull up to the station and conk out and couldn't restart. It seemed their electronic ignition was affected. They would have to be pushed off down the road until they were far enough away that they could start the engine again!
I've watched a lot of Time Team digs of Roman villas, where they try to work out what happened after the Romans left and before the lcoals trashed the place. This looks exactly like what would have happened if people turned up and took video at that exact time... Veh cool.

There were three diesel powered generators with massive battery packs when I was there
Yeah there was a bar! And a kitchen dining area went to loads of Christmas parties here
15:16 was the day/night room for the staff on duty :) there was some comfy chairs and tv in there.
16:31 used to have the main controls and the telex machine :) that was an amazing bit of kit with all colours lights :)

I was told years ago that this was used to communicate with submarines ?
Getting dizzy
Great video 🙂
Awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Then there was enquiries into leasing or buying the property but was to late, would of loved to restored
I remember the big Ariel towers when on holidays around 1960
why was the station specifically positioned there? does it have good line of sight? height?
