It took Tomas Haake more time to practice this song than the rest of the entire Obzen album. Great reaction, love seeing you getting into Meshuggah. You're in for a treat!
Meshuggah is one of my favorite bands of all time, but I feel that "Bleed" puts people off Meshuggah. It's a technically impressive song, which is why everyone always reacts to it, but I think there are many, many more accessible and groovy tracks. "Bleed" will give you a sense of a cold, lifeless, mechanical clock (which was done intentionally, I'm sure), whereas the track "Clockworks" (ironically) sounds far more groovy and organic (partly because it was recorded live). Another great intro to Meshuggah is "Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion" -- suuuuuper groovy. More great heavy groove offerings: Do Not Look Down, Beneath, Suffer in Truth, Shed, Ligature Marks, and many more.
Amen to this - Bleed did set the standard for what it would sound to have cancer evolving mechanically inside your body, but OH MY GOD, how GROOOOOOOOOVY MESHUGGAH is by 99% of other songs - to me it is something orgastic trance when listening those 99% other songs
Haha, I feel the same :') Bleed isn't exactly their best song in my opinion! Better introductions are for sure : - Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion - New Millennium Cyanide Christ - Do Not Look Down - I Am Colossus - Spasm - Swarm

Meshuggah are one of the most influential metal bands of the past 25 years. Their compositions and their tightness as a unit have been so far ahead of their time ever since their inception. As an example, the entire genre/movement of Djent was born out of numerous bands like Periphery and others trying to replicate Meshuggahs chuggy, brutal guitar tone, and their unique approach to songwriting. Meshuggah are that kind of band that other metal musicians respect to high heaven and countless musicians life goal is just to become like 10% as good as them. My absolute favourite band in the realm of heavy music.
Oh my god, this reaction video gave me goosebumps! This is exactly what Meshuggah does to you! I'm so glad you listened to this. Tomas Haake is an amazing drummer. They have another drum playthrough video of 'Clockworks'. It's not a live video, but it's so good. I know you'll appreciate it.
Welcome to one of swedens finest! It is said it took drum genious Tomas Haake 6 months to learn this drum technique to be able to play Bleed. Its very tough. Yeah, Meshuggah wrecks my brain. They're the right kind of heavy when I'm angry and frustrated, which is why I've listened to more of their stuff the last few days...but it's also why I haven't listened to them much. Even when I can headbang, I'm not totally sure I'm understanding what's happening. I actually listen to this entire song for the first time earlier today, to be ready for this video. I was pleasantly surprised when the melodic guitar section kicked in. It's a nice break from the absolute beating that your skulll takes from the rest of the song. It's wild - I remember thinking I was 5 minutes into the song at one point, then I checked and it wasn't even 3 minutes 😅 It's funny how many bands you've listened to in the last couple weeks that have made you say "I'm so mad I haven't listened to them before".
a friend of mine had a party at his place once, maybe 6-7 years ago. And Tomas Haake was there. And i've never met a more down to earth guy, when you spoke to him about Meshuggah or how good he actually is. He didnt really like to hear that stuff. He just wanted to get drunk and have fun. And i rly respect him for that.
Meshuggah is the best band in Sweden in this genre imo. Tomas Haake is actually a professor in drumming. They're so incredible tight together. Without Meshuggah a lot of bands wouldn't exist today. They're such an inspiration to so many people! Great reaction!❤
this is just insane! i love meshuggah so much...one of my favourite bands. there is an interview with thomas haake, in which he also speaks about this song and how much exercise it takes to play this drumbeat. he is such a machine!
Metal is really meditative, isn't it? A lot of therapy in that music and you can tell how intense these guys are, and how like engines their music is. It's got to be precise, driving and, yet, easy to listen to, if that makes sense. Thanks for your insightful reactions, knowledge of music and, of course, how lovely you are. : ) 🌺
‘When it’s gonna happen’ Huh? It’s happening the entire time. That’s the point of Meshuggah, generally; but emphasized in this track. The relentlessness!
I'm new to your channel but 17 seconds into this video you had me. Also, you’d love Sepultura’s Eloy Casagrande “Means to an End”. It’s mind blowing in a very different way. Metal has some of the best and unique drummers on the planet.
I used to fall asleep at shows for harcore, metal and punk shows we played, obviously because i was tired, but also this music is soothing to me. I once got woken up on a couch at the back of the venue and played. Good rest is necessary.
Meshuggah is my zen band. My favorite prog and djent bands. The drumming in this song is insane love your reactions. 🤘🤘. Your reactions always put a smile on my face. Never change. Keep it up.
So the cool thing about this song is that it's basically entirely in 4/4 (aside from a few 2/4 breaks in a couple spots) The start of the song makes it super clear because the cymbal is keeping the time with the snare hitting on beat 3. What makes it feel like it's constantly changing is just breaking up the rhythm and starting on off beats. But if you were to count the whole song in 4, you would get a clear picture of how it lines up. (You can also look at guitar tabs online to understand what's happening) Next Meshuggah Song Suggestion: I (21-minute track) It is an absolute gauntlet and almost never lets up. It's absolutely insane and isn't talked about enough
Dig deeper into Meshuggah, I love this song but check out more of them. Rational Gaze, dancers to a discordant system, closed eyes Visuals, future breed machine, pravus, the mouth licking what you’ve bled to name a few
I love that they created this song to sound like one described an aneuyrism. Like Haake sayed himself:"An aneurysm in your head killing you, and how you're transformed from a living being into dying. It's written in a lot of metaphors." So you can fell it in this up and down swelling at the end, driving you into insanity before death.
Yes! 🤘🏻 Meshuggah is my absolute favorite band. First time I heard this song I was like, what?! Then I saw them perform it live and I was done. The amount of talent this band has is just insane. I hope you react to more by them. I love this song but imo it doesn’t really represent what the band is all about as a whole. If you want a little bit more straight forward then Demiurge is a great song. Do Not Look Down, New Millennium Cyanide Christ, Rational Gaze, Dancers To A Discordant System…and the list goes on, they have such an amazing discography so it’s kinda hard to suggest…at least for me, love all their songs. Looking forward to the next one! 🤙🏻
It was fun watching you groove to this song. Ive been a metal head for years and just started listening to them. The polyrhythms and the way you are riding a sonic wave in this song is amazing.
Missed the premiere, loved the video! It’s really easy to get sucked into this song. As you said, it’s actually very relaxing even at full throttle. If you ever want to see something really funny, Bill Burr has a funny story about seeing these guys live with his drum instructor.
Meshuggah is absolutely insane in every way!! They are all machines especially Tomas Haake. You have gained a new subscriber. It’s amazing to see a lovely woman who is into heavy metal! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥☺️😉😊
the tightness of this band live comes from the click track that everyone have in there in ear monitor. even the effects of the guitars are programmed to this click track, so you dont see any step dance on a pedal board.
Me: *sees you're reacting to Bleed* "I love drums." Me: "Actually, there's a video focused specifically on Tomas Haake and it's--" *video starts* Me: "Oh, nevermind then. You're in for a treat." I respect Meshuggah so much. It's a bit of a coin toss if I ever get into any given music they release since they are just beyond my normal music taste, but damn, they can play. I've seen them in concert and it was just an assault on my entire being (in the very best sense). The near-unrelenting intensity of their music makes for a fantastic live experience even if you're not into their setlist from the start. I just love it when you can feel live music in your bones, and yeah, you can feel Meshuggah in your bones. Have you heard of Cult of Luna? They're not similar to Meshuggah in any particular way (aside from being from the same Swedish "birthplace of so much amazing metal" town, I guess), but they are another band that I just love seeing live. I become completely entranced whenever I see and hear them. Superb alternative/post-metal. I can really recommend songs like Following Betulas, Ghost Trail, and Dark City, Dead Man. Also, a funny thing to relate to your love of drums: seeing Cult of Luna live was the first time I ever saw a band have two drummers share the stage with their own drum kits to handle the craziness that was happening. They are *legit*.
He's playing 4/4 with his hands and 7/8 and 5/6 with his feet. It's insane what he's doing. We enjoy it because he's flawless, but we should hate the sound of it. He's that good.
You might love Meshuggah`s "Clockworks"! 😁🤘 Thomas Haake is a beast, Meshuggah come from northern Sweden and to me they seem like the ancesters of these vikings who simply were to lazy to go south and kick some ass! Alas, "Clockworks" (there also is some drum cover video, but the official video is Ok as this also was recorded in a kind of session) is a huge bunch of different rhythms put together in an insane rollercoaster ride. And - there is the most impressive build-up in metal history!!! 😀👍😆🤘
Aileen that dinosaur in the audience is chicken suit guy! He goes to all the shows at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD. Awesome dude. There's also a guy in a wheelchair that crowd surfs at all their shows at the venue. Meshuggah have given shout outs to them both!
There we go! I love seeing the look on peoples faces when they realize it sounds like upstairs and downstairs are not playing the same song. I find this song to be very powerful, but it hits me harder than most. If you didn’t know, this song is about a brain aneurysm rupturing(just read the lyrics). About 10 years ago I was experiencing extreme migraines and they mainly effected the left side of my head. After many tests/images were performed, they showed nothing was wrong on the left side, but they discovered an aneurysm on the right. That news was depressing and forced me to face my own mortality. This song helped me accept my little friend and find peace with what will probably be the cause of my death one day. I see you are about to get into “Orbit Culture” and I can wait to see you experience my favorite band.
"I'm excited for the when its gonna happen". Me: Miss, its already happening. its been happening since the beginning. Do you not see his feet and the poly-rhythm. Dudes a machine.
Everything in Meshuggash including vocals work as part of the rhythm soundscape. They are masters of polyrhythm as you found out that Haake is playing 2 different patterns in kick drums and snare.
I seen them for the 1st time at ozzfest somewhere between 2004 -2006 & what stuck out to me was how the drummer sounds like he is playing out of time in a way like he is playing purposely in between the time signatures..... it has a very interesting sound to it very unique
As a guitarist I've played around on the drums quite a bit. I have to agree about how hard it is to keep all your limbs going in perfect time and strength. But I think with practice, I might've been a good drummer.
as a guitar player that most of my influence comes from meshuggah i get what you mean when you say they are relaxing, thats why i love them so much when i learn a song from them and can play along to the songs it puts you in such a state of flow and peace thats like nothing else i've experianced.
Tomas Haake is the drummer. He’s one of the best metal, if not of all types of music, drummers ever. The music is pretty much 4/4 time signature but he makes it REALLY interesting by using polyrhythms. Pretty much his beats are very intricate but they all line up to a steady 4/4
Sometimes metal is relaxing to me. It's an outlet when I'm feeling pent up. It often has the opposite effect, though, and gets my blood pumping and I want to fight someone.
Going to bed listing to metal gets out all my access energy and lets me fall asleep much faster.. drowns out all the things in my mind and puts me at ease.
I understand it took Tomas more than 6 moths to reach the level of mastery necessary to play this live. The precision is incredible. His limb separation is beyond belief, playing hertas with his feet and off-beat triplets with his hands!
A fun video you may like is Morgen Agren and Fredrik Thordendal (the guitarist from Meshuggah) - Sol Niger Within - It's also a good observation you had about Tomas - He is one of the greatest poly - rhythm drummers of his generation, which means he often playing different measures between his feet and hands (sometimes even between individual limbs).
VERY impressed with your open minded attitude towards metal. Metal has a LOT of subgenres and can be quite a turn off for many people but not you! Great to get your insight into it as I would expect your experience to be different to mine as I grew up listening to metal very young (36 today).
Obzen - Djenty and reminds me of Periphery and good for first getting into Meshuggah. The Violent Sleep of Reason - Like dark tribal machines chugging through space. Reminds me of Vildhjarta and Humanity's Last breath but their Dad. Koloss - Gojira but more raw. Nothing - This is where the memes come from Catch 33 - it's one song Chaosphere - Reminds me of Slipknot's crazier step cousin New album Immutable is fantastic as well. Rhythmical masters and have a rightful place on Metal Mt Rushmore IMO
People react to this drumming like they do because even the professional drummers are amazed of the difficulty of this song to play. The main reason being the continual "herta" double base patterns during the song. Apparently it took him 6 months to learn it.
It's funny that your heart rate drops when listening to this. I'm pretty sure mine does too. Most people outside of metal would expect the opposite, but it's very calming, especially meshuggah since they tend to have this droning, repetitive vibe, in a good way.
Aileen, you're dappling into black deaf metal. Meshuga is a deaf metal group from Switzerland and they take metal to some very dark places. But they have more talent in one finger than I have in my whole body. Especially Thomas Hawwke, the drummer that doesn't need beer kegs or kettle drums to sound like a drum god.
Tomas said in an interview that he had to take the time to rework his drumming style in order to be able to play this song. The guitarists wrote the song a long time ago but it was never recorded until ObZen because Tomas couldn't do it. He said he basically had to learn how to tap dance in order to play the song.
You couldn't have chosen a better drummer. Tomas Haake, Brann Dailor and the amazing Danny Carey of Tool are my absolute faves. Mr. Haake is on another level. Awesome 🔥🔥🔥🔥
You could watch this video a thousand times and you'd still never see a flaw, that was a epic performance. His feet were playing one song to keep the guitars in time, and his hands were slamming that main beat and fills, he road that Tom and floor Tom and high-hat had snare, crash, and ride like they owed him money. Not a big fan of black deaf metal, but I am a fan of talented people. And Thomas Hawwke is a very talented drum machine.
If you want an insanely aweosme combo, check out Meshuggah's version of Benzin from Rammstein's single for it. They basically just wrote an entirely new song but kept Till's vocals and it's freaking amazing.
Try the drum video of Tomas Haake playing “Clockworks” by Meshuggah. Fun fact: Danny Carey from Tool goes to watch Tomas Haake perform and shakes his head at how good Tomas Haake is. There’s a recurring line in the music world that goes something like this: “Your favorite drummer’s favorite drummer is Tomas Haake.” Bill Burr, the comedian, went to see Meshuggah in LA with a famous drummer and said all the best drummers in LA were there staring incredulously at Tomas Haake while he played. Tomas Haake is in a whole different stratosphere than 99% of the drummers out there; it’s like watching Michael Jordan compared to the best guy on a high school team.
“Ride the rhythm”… precisely. The vocals are indeed basically just another rhythm instrument. The lyrics contained therein though… well that’s a whole other story, and, the drummer writes them 😉
Other insane drum kits in the extreme metal world..... Pavulon (ex-HATE)... Walk Through Fire at Brutal Assault drum cam... George Kollias (Nile)..... Shall Rise, Shall Be Dead YouGroove drum cam... Darkside (of Polish black metal band Mgła)... Exercises in Futility 5 is a good one... freaking insane cymbal work. On the flipside, Flo Mournier of death metal band Cryptopsy... very minimal drum kit featured in Slit your guts video from some music festival. I'm also partial to Luana Dametto's videos (drum playthroughs) (CRYPTA and ex-Nervosa) and her replacement Eleni Nota. I've seen another death metal drummer who plays in socks...or maybe it was barefoot? Paul Mazurkiewicz of Cannibal Corpse. .. drum cam of hammer smashed face
I always describe Meshuggah as violently meditative. It's like Zen at the heart of an infernal machine
well said!
That is the best description of their music I've ever read.
Absobloodylultely mate..!

Being you said that- think of this and listen to the song they have called "Broken Cog"
It took Tomas Haake more time to practice this song than the rest of the entire Obzen album.
Great reaction, love seeing you getting into Meshuggah.

He said in an interview around the same time that he had to completely change his playing style just to pull off the hertas.
He also recorded it in chunks. Obviously can’t do that live.

One of my favorites because of the breakdown after the guitar solo. That song hits HARD.

Funny how nobody mentions the bass player in this song. He provides 1/3 of the percussion sound !
And not only in this song! Thanks for crediting the bass :-)

Next Meshuggah Song Suggestion: I (21-minute track) It is an absolute gauntlet and almost never lets up. It's absolutely insane and isn't talked about enough
I know it's about bleeding to death, but I always thought this perfectly described each member of this band playing/singing this song. They all BLEED!
Dig deeper into Meshuggah, I love this song but check out more of them. Rational Gaze, dancers to a discordant system, closed eyes Visuals, future breed machine, pravus, the mouth licking what you’ve bled to name a few
All awesome suggestions! I Am Colossus is another killer track I always come back to
@@daetros1626 thank you!! They are one of my favorite bands. There is heavy and then there is Meshuggah!! 👍🏻🤘🏻
You could listen to contradictions collapse too, give you a different side of meshuggah, also shows how they progressed into their style.
God I love Rational Gaze
@@johnarchibald6 my favorite Meshuggah song
My favourite band of all time. The most rhythmical, technical, djenty powerhouse in all of music.
It was fun watching you groove to this song. Ive been a metal head for years and just started listening to them. The polyrhythms and the way you are riding a sonic wave in this song is amazing.
I knew when you would eventually get to this song you're gonna choose this version which is great cz i know how much you love drums 🔥🤘🏻
The Clockworks play through is worth the watch as well.
I'm not sure if i watched this one but probably will
Death - Lack of Comprehension - Live in Eindhoven '98
Amazing band, and amazing drummer.
Missed the premiere, loved the video! It’s really easy to get sucked into this song. As you said, it’s actually very relaxing even at full throttle. If you ever want to see something really funny, Bill Burr has a funny story about seeing these guys live with his drum instructor.
the Drummer, Tomas Haake, is married to an Actress from orange is the new black, and she is also a vocalist in a metal band.
Meshuggah is absolutely insane in every way!! They are all machines especially Tomas Haake. You have gained a new subscriber. It’s amazing to see a lovely woman who is into heavy metal! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥☺️😉😊
Awesome! Thank you!
the tightness of this band live comes from the click track that everyone have in there in ear monitor. even the effects of the guitars are programmed to this click track, so you dont see any step dance on a pedal board.
Me: *sees you're reacting to Bleed*
"I love drums."
Me: "Actually, there's a video focused specifically on Tomas Haake and it's--"
*video starts*
Me: "Oh, nevermind then. You're in for a treat."
I respect Meshuggah so much.
There’s a video that breaks down the technical rhythm of the drums. It’s something that can’t be described. Absolutely outstanding
Finally the day has come, Meshuggah 😄
Ghost: Infestissumam/ Per Aspera live Argentina 2014.
It's an absolutely explosive opener to a concert.
He is the definition of a drum god!!!
That’s what I thought
Thanks for reacting to my favorite band, your a true djentleman
top tier comment ^^^
Everything in Meshuggash including vocals work as part of the rhythm soundscape. They are masters of polyrhythm as you found out that Haake is playing 2 different patterns in kick drums and snare.
the "stink face" is inevitable with Meshuggah , soo awesome !!
'Clockworks'. That song is just next level Meshuggah craziness.
I seen them for the 1st time at ozzfest somewhere between 2004 -2006 & what stuck out to me was how the drummer sounds like he is playing out of time in a way like he is playing purposely in between the time signatures..... it has a very interesting sound to it very unique
"I feel like he has something up his sleeve".... The whole song is up his sleeve!!!
Thomas Haake smashing skins with the best of them. The guy must have calf muscles of the gods to keep that kind of bass drum rhythm. 🥁 🥁
Sometimes metal is relaxing to me. It's an outlet when I'm feeling pent up. It often has the opposite effect, though, and gets my blood pumping and I want to fight someone.
Messugah is like meditative Metal, i know it doesn’t make a lot of sense but it will. It’s like what Tool does but more satanic.
Going to bed listing to metal gets out all my access energy and lets me fall asleep much faster.. drowns out all the things in my mind and puts me at ease.
My favorite hobby: Looking up Meshuggah - Bleed reactions and watching the peerson that reacts trying to find a rythm to move their head to XD
I'm so glad I found your channel.
A woman who finds Meshuggah relaxing.
I think I'm in love lol.
Just wanted to recommend my favorite band between the buried and me! They’re absolutely my favorite progressive metal band.
I highly suggest that you check out "Rational Gaze" and "Clockworks" from them next. You would be blown away by their technical prowess
VERY impressed with your open minded attitude towards metal. Metal has a LOT of subgenres and can be quite a turn off for many people but not you! Great to get your insight into it as I would expect your experience to be different to mine as I grew up listening to metal very young (36 today).
The face you make at 5:44 is definitely one we have all made when listening to Meshuggah lol. It's pure filth, but in a great way 😂
Obzen - Djenty and reminds me of Periphery and good for first getting into Meshuggah.
The Violent Sleep of Reason - Like dark tribal machines chugging through space. Reminds me of Vildhjarta and Humanity's Last breath but their Dad.
Koloss - Gojira but more raw.
Nothing - This is where the memes come from
Catch 33 - it's one song
Chaosphere - Reminds me of Slipknot's crazier step cousin
New album Immutable is fantastic as well.
Rhythmical masters and have a rightful place on Metal Mt Rushmore IMO
Ah so cool! This will be so interesting to see what you think about it. 🤗
Wait until you watch the Clockworks drum video. This song is more insane, but Clockworks is more diverse.
Someone slowed down the video and it made it so much more heavier and more evil. It’s amazing!
The drum cam for Clockworks is otherworldly.
From my hometown, seen them live a couple of times, really experimental, Fredrik Thordendal is a monster in music composing
Awesome 🔥🔥🔥🔥
such an unbelievable and technical achievement by everyone involved to pull off this shit. eye would recommend the video to Demiurge.
Those drums are so fucking good. God damn.
“Ride the rhythm”… precisely. The vocals are indeed basically just another rhythm instrument. The lyrics contained therein though… well that’s a whole other story, and, the drummer writes them 😉
Thomas Haake plays two different time signatures while he plays. One signature in his hands and another in his feet.
Tomas Haake should be #1 on your list ;)!
said in an interview that it took him at least 3 to 6 months to re teach himself to play drums for THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so heavy but equally groovy at the same time
Oddly enough I even find it kind of relaxing. And I don't even listen to heavier types of metal usually. Something almost hypnotic about this one.
Their new album, Immutable dropped April first but it’s anything but a joke 😊
I love it now when I listened to it a bunch of times.
