I feel like the art in this game carries it a lot. It is unique and gorgeous. The music is awesome as well. I have seen a billion ads for this game over the past few months on TH-cam but for some reason I don’t seem to mind it much because the music is so good.
Aside from "auto battler", I prefer to call these mobile games as "efficiency simulators" because all you do is set up and build your units, as you watch the system beat itself. That's kind of why this genre is very popular amongst computer engineers because they're doing the same thing they already do at work, but with anime girls. They're obsessed with making the system be as efficient as possible to the point where input is no longer required. There are exceptions, but a majority of gacha games are designed to play itself when their audiences do not have the time to do so.
Personally I hate auto battlers because most the time there's so few levers to pull or tweak other than "Bigger number" and when things start going wrong you are basically already dead. I bring it up cause I'm playing it again, Unicorn Overlord is technically an 'auto battler' but given how many little things you can tweak to give yourself an edge going from fight to fight, it feels far more engaging than most gatcha autos.
It's a shame what the gameplay itself is, because the artstyle and the music make what is honestly the best presentation I've ever seen from a gacha game period. Haven't looked through all the music yet but out of the half a dozen songs I've listened to so far, 4 of them ended up on my playlist (both the english and JP versions are quite good). Also watercolour and anime go together sooo well. Would love to see if Bank of Innovation can make something with a bit more gameplay in the future while maintaining this kind of incredible style, probably just wishful thinking on my part though.
Played this quite a while ago, LOVED the music and art (still have the playlist, really great), but gameplay is just another chore after a while, so, yeah, can recommend to give it a try but expect to drop it in a month or two.
The story is told mostly through the witches' memories, and it's really interesting. In the first half of the game, Elfriede is the main villain. She was a successor of the pope, and her main goal was to eradicate demons from the world (demons that have been trying to destroy the world for hundreds of years now). But due to her weak heart, she gets possessed by a demon that was disguised as an angel. Her body was taken over by it, but she managed to fight it off...until the demon started to kill everyone she loved - parents, friends...until she gave up and the demon got full control of her. The demon started the witch hunts by using Elfriede's body and her status as the pope of Longinus. The main character - the duke of Fran - is the successor of the staff that can eradicate demons and, as we thought, curses. He is at first accompanied by the girl named Illya. With Illya and other witches, they went saving the witches of Qualipha from their curses, thinking that they were destroying the curses. But after saving Elfriede, they find out that the curses are sealed demons. After breaking the curses, the curses combined and made the real one, the 11th curse - the demon god. Illya was special in that she could make one wish from god after destroying the curses, but you find out that she absorbed the curses and absorbed the Demon Lord inside her, keeping it locked but not for long. After breaking the 10 curses, she tried to make the wish of a god, but after having fun saving the world, she didn't want to die with the demon lord inside of her to save the world - she wished to live and be with the duke of Fran, making her wish unusable. After that, they are trying to go to the throne of the demon lord in the underground to try to make the wish of god... but will she do that or change her mind? Here is a story of two witches, and it still has much more because there are 70 + Witches, with their memories that intertwine,
The flaw is that you need to acquire as many characters as possible, but a lot of them are limited and reapear 2 times a year, to get the full piece of the story 😢 And new players just don't know where to find the icon to listen to their stories😂😂😂
For why these games are popular: even in a moderate sized city in Japan your commute to school (high school/college) or work is likely on a packed train or bus. You’ve got a small amount of space to hold and use your phone, and are probably getting bumped into while you do it. Something like this or FGO is pretty good for those daily commutes. Genshin is also super popular here amongst younger people, but that’s more because it’s a free action game you can play on an iPad.
The reason i played it was for the artwork and later beacuse of the music but something else made me like it more was the character storys you get with the characters i remeber them being good and they resonate well with the song they each have thanks but thanks for the reweiw
this game surprisingly have major playerbase in japan idk why someone said to me theres memento mori streamer and i was like "someone really stream this game????"
Geniuenly if not of the art and weapon banners this review could be mistaken for AFK arena, and knowing AFK arena it get's trash in later stages, enemies level's skyrocket while throwing impossible teams at you wich are still trash since it throws 5 R units forcibly made LR so despite lvl diffrence they still get reckt, and even after that they just make you get additional teams and after a YEAR I sill didn't have 3 teams of LR units since it took so long to get it That paragraph might have been about AFK arena but I'm shure thanks to all the similarities between it and Memento Mori it will end up the same
Tight tight tight, I’ll never play half the gacha you review but still interesting to see takes on them! It’d be dope to see a video on BCM, pretty sure it’s gonna go EOS soon, but seeing how you rate that doo doo game would be neat
I've tried this game around 20 days ago. I liked the artstyle so even if i despise AFK games i gave it a shot. I lasted 2 days. Mainly because i don't see the appeal in the long term with afk games in general, but also because, while the game has an amazing art and music, it can't carry itself forever with just those two. I understand the story is told with the characters stories, but is a weak and easly missable storytelling device. The gameplay just wasn't there too. A shame, because such beautiful art and music is wasted on this. Also, i would love if you would give a look to Outerplane. A gatcha game that had an horrible launch, but has recovered a bit, and yet it has little to none global community.
a small critique or maybe it is just a me thing, when you start a new gacha for this series i prefer if you choose a normal or even a bad time to start a gacha, like avoid starting at anni/collabs time so it gives a better prospective for the people that are interested in the game. this does suck for you if you are interested in continuing playing the game in question but for the viewer it is better in term of setting expectations
Well, it only has auto battler content. I still played it for more than a year because the daily is less than 15 minutes. Still waiting for new chara for the music and story too
It's truly carried by the art and music. I am a (former) VIP because I spent a bit on the game, but there really is no point to spending in this game. Money spent is just due to impatience. The gacha currency is pretty slow to accumulate, and its made worse by the heavy incentive to pull multiple copies of new characters because SR rarity just won't cut it.
this game does have a really interesting story, but it’s locked behind gacha- WHICH IS UNFORTUNATE BECAUSE THIS GAME DOES HAVE A REALLY INTERESTING STORY!!
I disagree that the game has no story. The story is there, you just have to look for it in the character profiles, character memories, character songs and monologue, descriptions of the world in new chapters, etc. You even show most of these things in the video. As an example, you said the game doesn't explain who's responsible for the conflict in the story, but the game actually does: Elfriede, the pope leading the witch hunts, who is also one of the witches. She was initially tasked with saving the world from demons in events that occurred before the game's start, but she was possessed by one of them because of her weakness. You can find out about this from the sources I mentioned. Yes it's a different, less explicit method of storytelling from what's common in gachas, but the story is there, and is very interesting in my opinion.
0:49 funnily enough, there are 3 official pc clients, BOI version and JP server only pc version (both japan exclusive), and one from DMM aswell (also need a VPN)
My only real issue with this game was the story. They did a great job with that first chapter and then it just kinda..... stopped. The character stories were pretty good too but after a while I started to wonder why I even had the game installed. The music is amazing but I can listen to all of it on youtube along with the character stories and the only thing I really miss by not playing the game for real would be the powerpoint battles.
Japan like these kind of game because they do more work rather than playing games anyways.... So they just play the game that kind of wasting time but not really.
2:38 - "They are no action intensive". I understand that you can play Nikke most in auto, but unless you are a total casual, you can't play Blue Archive in auto past the first weeks, when your characters can beat the mission stages despite the dumb ia moves. If you want to play the endgame content someday, you have to play manual all the way through.
Missions aren't hard I can easly push later chapters in BA with my squad being on level, end game is impossible thou, since I've seen AI do the most retarded moves possible like :there is 1 guy left in the wave? why not use 7 COST SKILL on them
Would you ever play Onmyoji? It's a pretty old-ish gacha game and the grind and meta for PVP is egregiously bad. I used to play it fairly competitively a couple of years ago but ultimately burnt out when I couldn't keep up with the constant new SSR/SP shikigami in the PVP and PVE meta. The art, story and cutscenes were bloody amazing but the grind was so repetitive that I couldn't stand it anymore
You should try the Battle Cats. Ots 12 years old and has 94M downloads but nobody really talks about it that much. It's a tower defense game and its really really fun.
I think your gacha rates part is slightly incorrect. Almost every SR is limited except for the handful thats not limited. If you want to LR a limited character, you have to keep waiting until she reruns.
I am baffled by the amount of game review/gameplay youtubers being sponsored by LDplayer lol 5 laptops so far, all of them run ldplayer like crap compared to bluestacks, lol... I am still wondering which pc are supposed to run ldplayer on
8:47 Normal, rare, super rare, ultra rare, Legend rare. I actually prefer this sort of scaling rather than r, sr ss, ssssr, that some games have. Having the most common unit named "rare" makes no sense. Super super super rare sounds dumb too. Normal/common, uncommon, rare, super rare, ultra rare, legendary is the best form of unit categories.
I think it works the best. It draws a lot from similar systems that are done since the beginning of time and it's just more intuitive. Adding extra letters should be reserved for things like ascension/rank-up mechanics(because if it's done in steps an SR won't immediately become an UR)
@stardust9470 wouldn't ascensions just be rate-ups? I feel like those are interchangeable terms. If I ascend an Uncommon unit, it'd ascend to Rare not, "Un Uncommon".
did bro really call a vip system "questionable" ... a vip system is an immediate red flag to any game out there and I would not recommend playing a game with such system to even my worst enemies
Nowadays it's replaced with paid battlepass and more emphasis on gacha. Because even greedy company need to be smarter in hiding their greedy intention. Beside VIP is red flag only for player who can't afford to waste infinite amount of money, but whales will not stick around a game that's not popular, and f2p/lowspender not gonna stick around a game that already revealed their hands, just like how you're not gonna watch magic show that you already know how the tricks work.
It was one of the things that killed Taimanin RPG global, together with gem debt and battle pass, players who played JP prior just went back, since there was no VIP and BP systems on top of years of updates not a fucking 1.0
I was utterly frustrated with Memento Mori. I played it on launch, but threw in the towel on Day 2. To me, the gorgeous presentation is just wasted on the illusion of a game. I already despise AFK games for their cheap appeal to quick dopamine rushes of the lowest kind, but Memento Mori actually has something worthwhile in its visuals and music. And then they go full BS with the typical VIP nonsense while making the general progression a slog and a half, like the countless cheap asset flips that I've seen hundreds of times, mostly in chinese or poorly-translated english. I'm actually mildly surprised there are no crypto schemes invovled... yet. If this game had at least some modicum of in-combat decisionmaking, I wouldn't be as annoyed with it. But it's such a waste of talent to make the most low-brain design with these amazing assets, it's just painful. People can like what they want, but even among gachas, AFK's are a whole new level of worthless, and I will never have anything but the deepest disdain for these flashing insults.
The decision-making happens before the combat. You can't just push through everything with the same overpowered team. You need to choose the right units based on what they provide, like silencing or stunning enemies, disabling their health regeneration, specific targeting gimmicks, and other things that vary widely depending on the enemy's party. You have a lot of control over the outcome of a fight, just not during the fight itself. Some people don't like that which is fine but that doesn't mean the depth isn't there.
It does have story content but not in the usual way. You have to piece the story together from descriptions of the world, character profiles, character memories, songs, etc.
@@bltzcstrnx It's fine to do something different. Some people prefer this approach and some people prefer the more direct approach, nothing wrong with either of them.
Im not playing but I saw the ads back, the art is undeniably superb, and the OST are quite interesting to my preference. As I have Nikke and FGO to worry nowaday, I dont need another Gacha game in my life. I kinda, disappointed that this game is Gacha game. Many mobile games have high potential to do well if it not Gacha game, like this one. Such a wasted potential game, I like the arts, music and story (i heard it quite good as well)
This game, Memento Mori is a perfect example of why *mobile game gain notoriously amongst non Free to Play video game player. 99% of them resent mobile game, and despite them and everyone who is playing them.* I mean..... Can you blame them? Such graphic, such visual and music, etc.... And all of them for a virtual gambling machine disguise as a game. I personally even no longer care about mobile game anymore, since I only interest on the golden era ( Pre 2010s mobile game), since those were the years when mobile game was at it's peak ( Infinite Blade, N.O.V.A., Modern Combat, Hero of Sparta, Galaxy on Fire 2,...). The only posted 2010s mobile game I care about is *Ex Astris* , some PC game ported to mobile ( Company of Heroes), and emulator. Arknights and Heaven Burns Red is the only gacha I play right now ( persuaded by my friend btw), which I will drop gacha all together once these game close their server.
Also, the site itself mentioned in an obscure part saying that they just put a chosen multiplier between a range of a certain high and certain low. Very inaccurate since the numbers are basically pulled out of nowhere.
Only counts iOS in China, which in the minority of mobile OS marketshare over there. They also only calculates revenue from certain metrics made available by platform holder (Apple & Google). At most their calculations are educated guess. Other than those two, they doesn't take into account people purchasing contents outside of Play Store & AppStore. On top of all that, modern gacha games are available outside of mobile platform such as PC and consoles. They don't take into account that revenue stream.
This later occuring banners are a reason more for me to vote for an gacha-ban worldwide. These layers of scam has become a monster than noone can fathom anymore...
The way Westerners see gacha and the Asian see gacha are completely different. I'm pretty sure where I live, if you asked people would they like all games to be pay-to-play, most of them wouldn't agree.
This is not a "game" but a glorified slot machine. No story, no gameplay, not even enemy character designs. I can play this "game" in my Wallpaper Engine from Steam lol. Its not even a good afk game like AFK Arena, its just that they hired a bunch of artists on low wages and some university students to code it while getting 100x ROI. This might really be a money laundering scheme.
I get the power point thingy, but why are AFK grinders enjoyable for gacha gamers? I don't get it, really, I get it when it can help you farm stuff sometimes, but everything beign done by the Cpu? Really don't get it...
@NikLoveGaming I have played many japanese games where tiering exist and trust me japanese players are the most insane players in the world, they can play 24 hrs. non-stop and score insane results during grinding days. I don't think they don't have time to play games.
@@jinx3709Those would be from the younger generation, and not the working adults. The adults don't care about gaming as a job since they already have their hands full.

Why don't you ever talk about Nikke anymore?
You play for 1 month and said this game does not have story???
SERIOUSLY??????
Some of the story is in this video too. You can even see Merlyn at 15:27 saying "Hey, Mister Apprentice, would you listen to my story?"
The art is definitely my favourite part of the game, it's so lovely
Music is the main content the game is an excuse
Me personally, the ice the rust the justice and crying blue
so does this game have no story content?
It has character story. So mostly locked unless you have the character. Or just read it on TH-cam lol
It does have story content but not in the usual way. You have to piece the story together from descriptions of the world, character profiles, character memories, songs, etc.
@@lotte3863why not just make servicable narative like any other gacha?
@@bltzcstrnx It's fine to do something different. Some people prefer this approach and some people prefer the more direct approach, nothing wrong with either of them.
Me waiting for the granblue fantasy review
Lr=legend rare
Calling Memento Mori a game is very very extremely generous
Im not playing but I saw the ads back, the art is undeniably superb, and the OST are quite interesting to my preference. As I have Nikke and FGO to worry nowaday, I dont need another Gacha game in my life.
I kinda, disappointed that this game is Gacha game. Many mobile games have high potential to do well if it not Gacha game, like this one. Such a wasted potential game, I like the arts, music and story (i heard it quite good as well)
This game, Memento Mori is a perfect example of why *mobile game gain notoriously amongst non Free to Play video game player. 99% of them resent mobile game, and despite them and everyone who is playing them.*
I mean.....
Seems to resemble afk arena
Please try out Wizardry Variants: Daphne!
he already did, check his previous videos
@@kimashitawa8113oh man...how did I not see it!?
he already have a review for it. Look it up.
@NikLoveGaming yeah the previous commenter mentioned that. I found it. I initially scrolled right past it lol
How is SensorTower not accurate? just want to know
All the data come from iOS alone; the Android and PC revenue is omitted.
Also it doesn't have China data so that's biggest gacha audience gone
I played since launch, it isn't good, I only play to see the game die off
why this though? I'm confused if you are into AFK games being Japanese better to play things like AFK arena or Journey they far more than this....
So it's awful trash in beautiful cover
This later occuring banners are a reason more for me to vote for an gacha-ban worldwide. These layers of scam has become a monster than noone can fathom anymore...
Give up Lil guy the companies love like life and wants money and gacha games is the best way to get it without atrocious effort
The way Westerners see gacha and the Asian see gacha are completely different. I'm pretty sure where I live, if you asked people would they like all games to be pay-to-play, most of them wouldn't agree.
Blue Archive: Epic Anime Restarting Simulator
Oh lord, this looks like the NFT Phantom of the Kill game
This is not a "game" but a glorified slot machine. No story, no gameplay, not even enemy character designs. I can play this "game" in my Wallpaper Engine from Steam lol. Its not even a good afk game like AFK Arena, its just that they hired a bunch of artists on low wages and some university students to code it while getting 100x ROI. This might really be a money laundering scheme.
Legend League sounds like a game mode where only the most toxic players can participate 😂
I get the power point thingy, but why are AFK grinders enjoyable for gacha gamers? I don't get it, really, I get it when it can help you farm stuff sometimes, but everything beign done by the Cpu? Really don't get it...
Im m the 400th like yaaaay
Japan loves niche games that stand no chance in the west, like Heaven burns red lol.
Why is he reviewing a music app?
Also, still wish he would review Another Eden.
Where's the atrocious gacha review man?
Aaa
first
Game look atrocious. 😂
It really is just powerpoint png
another example why japan is weird
its not really think its weird despite how they work environment. It just work to pass time. Have to play heavily engaging game after work is taxing.
@NikLoveGaming I have played many japanese games where tiering exist and trust me japanese players are the most insane players in the world, they can play 24 hrs. non-stop and score insane results during grinding days. I don't think they don't have time to play games.
6-7 mandatory work days from morning till evening..can't blame them for wanting chill games instead of tryhard ones.
@@jinx3709Those would be from the younger generation, and not the working adults. The adults don't care about gaming as a job since they already have their hands full.
@@reed3863996 is China not Japan. In Japan, they have standard working hours like many places around the world. Well, at least on paper.
