Digital Detox & Breaking Down VANLIFE in Romanian Mountains

- This was not how we thought our 72hr digital detox would end. After a couple of stressful weeks we head into the Romanian wilderness. The first 1,000 people to use the link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare: skl.sh/phillyk... We had no idea that the metaphor would become reality and ultimately disconnecting would end with us broken down in a Romanian mountain with no way to contact anyone.
We set ourselves a challenge of 72hr digital fasting! No phones, no internet, no laptops, emails, no google maps, google translate. It became even more challenging than we ever imagined!! What did we learn from it all? Hopefully something!

We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But now we are back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe and beyond!!

Thankyou, I mean I defo shed a few tears after it all not gonna lie, was just so so so stressful. But we are in much better spirits now, I feel like making a video about it is almost therapy haha.

Yeah I think we miss Gen X by a couple of years, but we had older siblings who were so still grew up with paper maps etc. We were the generation whose child hood and teenage years had no mobile phones, but at like 15 Nokia phones were a thing. It feels like we lived on both sides haha, it actually kind of terrifies me to see the progression of technology so quickly throughout my life. Crazy to think kids now don't know any other way.

Ooh that’s what my clutch did on my Fiat two days before my wedding (we were due to drive to the first stop on our honeymoon in my Fiat! Issues!!). Thankfully my Grandad was mates with a mechanic who managed to fit my car in on the Friday and got it sorted. Phew!! Just in time! Hope Martha is all better

Currently on holiday from the U.K. in Florida. It was 93F here today, so the private pool at our rented villa was the coolest water available - no regrets whatsoever going for a swim to cool down!

A digital detox sounds like heaven. The only other time I used to get one was when I went on holiday abroad because I didn't want to pay for roaming but now I can't afford the holidays abroad. I might start doing detox Sundays. We'll see....
That's a cool idea detox Sundays. We were thinking of a time lot. Like 9am-9pm good, but no morning and no nightine on phone. So like 12 hour detox everyday haha

This Vlog made me so happy and proud that you didn't cave in and you proved to yourselves that you can achieve anything together, without the help from modern technology, well done, I'm so proud of you any ways. Also true enlightenment actually is becoming authentic, compassionate and kind to all beings, with no judgement to self or others, for the greater of all good, and see the good in all things and situations, no need to become a monk, it's not crazy, it's mastery and meditation can take many forms, there has been far too much emphasis on stream line enlightenment to look crazy but it's happening to all of us now, whether we are aware or not, that's why we are all being challenged now, to see if you grow or explode, every time you master a step you actually are becoming more intuative and authentic. You two are fabulous and I love that you didn't get ya phone's out, well done ❤
PS if you need help in your meditation practice, I'm happy to help you, 6 years ago I used to laugh at the now me, I never thought I'd be able to do it but I can now, not always but it's not about stopping the thought, it's about becoming aware of when your mind takes control and how easy it is to wonder... it's called meditation practice more specifically for the word practice, all we have to do is practice, not be perfect coz every day you try something even if it's different every day, switch it up
, listen to your intuition and find something to be grateful for every morning ❤

@@phillyandkeely I'll send you some gooders on instagram ❤ I'm a hairdresser of 32 year's so can you imagine the full 2 sided convos I've had with myself, trying to meditate, so if I can do it, you can too, sometimes you'll completely leave, but not sleep, it's trippy, other times you'll find every person you have a beef with, pop's in to trigger you, it's all part of healing tho so just be kind with yourselves ❤

I sometimes “hide” my phone. I love knitting but I often get distracted by my phone so it helps me concentrate.
As for the dog treats… My husband tries EVERYTHING new that I buy for my pup. it’s kind of funny.

Its always good to make a detox with your phone and social media, but a good thing is to be aware about it during your day, just keep it close and try to use for work and thats it, puting the challenge of spending x amount of hours and thats it, but its an amazing excercise to do
Great recommendations, we were thinking of giving ourselves like a phone curfew lol. Definitely needs to be a continuous concious awareness of our consumption.

@@phillyandkeely yeah it’s made things pretty tough. Luckily harvested lots of different potatoes before the frost happened so will be living off those I reckon ha. Yeah getting harder with the unpredictable climate… too hot in the south and too cold in the north..

Oh God guys, I know how this feels, wishing Martha a speedy recovery. My clutch went at a roundabout on my way to a ferry in Italy and I had to convince the captain to let me speed on in first gear after all the vehicles were loaded, and speed off again in Spain! Then my boyfriend (we have 2 vans) towed me to a garage in Barcelona, when we arrived in Spain, which turned out to be illegal so we got fined €250 on top of all of that! It could be worse guys, you could be as unlucky as me 🤣🤣🤣 🙈

My screen time every week is at least 13 hours . I trade stocks with my phone . That's nine hours five days a week . My phone is set to wake me up as soon as you two post a video . So obviously a lot of TH-cam . I've let this phone become a addiction . I've lost two in the last five years and I've had a Keely breakdown both times . We all know those breakdowns are not pretty . I've been told the new iPhone is $1,600 . I do have a fund for a new phone but I don't need any of the features iPhone came out with this time . So I'll probably wait . I'm curious do you guys have a fund especially for a new van / home ? As far as me going swimming I live in a apartment complex and I haven't been in the pool yet . It closed last week for the year . Got a little work to do on my six pack before any pool time can happen . I'm sure the clutch was no problem . You two have over came larger problems to my surprise . I would of been the first to comment but a porn site seems to immediately post as soon as the video comes up .

That sounds crazy expensive for a phone, we no longer but main brand phones, but Chinese brands like Xoami and Poco because they have all the features we need but fraction of the cost. This was the last in our "emergency mechanic" pot haha, but luckily tuition starts back up this month so will be able to start adding some money back again lol. Yeah we are careful with our IG feed, but even our feed is saturated with people making reels with the same trending audios now. I like the peacefulness of photos.

Think about the experience in it's totality without the use of technology. Even though you were in a foreign country with a language barrier, you were still able to connect on a human-personable level. You're not completely helpless without technology instead there are other avenues you can utilize without technology. And sometimes the human connections however brief are an experience unlike the ones you would not have had, had you utilized your technology.

Oh no you’ve been having some bad luck recently. Hope the clutch can be fixed. Maybe not a bad country for it to happen as might be cheap labour in Romania. Completely agree with your conclusion about phones and the internet. I can remember touring Europe before smartphones and looking back it totally sucked it’s so much better with Google Maps and all that stuff. But a that useful free stuff is paid for with ads and they are designed to addict you to keep looking. The path to enlightenment is to use the free services to make your life easier but don’t be a slave to the global tech companies and make your life worse.

That everything turns around and it doesn’t cost a fortune to fix Marther. There is a saying that bad things happen in threes so there was the drone then Rosie and now Marther so it is going to be smooth sailing from now on. This is the rest of my comment I didn’t realise I hit post until it disappeared of my screen. I hope you can continue to go up that mountain after Marther is fixed and then you get Rosie and a miracle happens and you get your drone back.
