    I have done this swap a couple times , it's amazing how much difference in the car with the 6 speed ! It's so much more beefy , and the 6 speed flywheel is a tank !

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruce Holinight it sure makes a difference. Especially when I did not have second gear. The flywheel is a light weight 5mt clutchmasters I believe. Wish I did the OEM 6 speed flywheel and clutch but I was cheep.

      @@RoadPatina I was cheap too and used the 5 speed clutch but as soon as I found a 6 speed flywheel and new bolts I changed it ! Could not really feel the difference inside the car but after handling that beefy 6 speed flywheel it give me a lot more confidence ! Swapping to a 6 speed is like driving a whole different car !

    That's STi rear end, not only is it stronger, but it also has a helical diff. (A pretty significant improvement.)

    One common misconception is that every Impreza between 92-01 were "GC8's". The code breakdown is as follows; G - stands for Impreza, C - sedan, M - coupe, F - station wagon, The 8 stands for the 2.0 L turbo motor. So really, there are many combinations. A coupe STi would be GM8, sedan GC8, wagon GF8. Also, the code for the coupe American 2.5RS's were GM6 (6 standing for the 2.5 L N/A motor)

    • @xav1uz
      @xav1uz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      youre mostly correct but sedans and coupe both share the C letter. i own a EUDM 4door with a GC8 vin and a guy local to me owns a JDM impreza type R 2door with a GC8 vin as well. the GM thing is exclusively a US thing

    • @RoadPatina

      So many letters!

    • @jokumukamikalie
      @jokumukamikalie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also interestingly, my 1997 EUDM Impreza VIN is GC8, despite it having 2.0 NA engine. It appears that the "8" only refers to the 2.0 engine size, not the aspiration.

    I wanted to ask if the PPG gearset was a full syncho 1-5 or 1-4? But depending on when it was built, I think they have an updated design second gear for that.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t recall. It was originally built long ago 5+ years. The fist owner said the PPG 2nd gear went out twice. It was going to cost the same to rebuild the 5mt as going 6speed. No brained for me!

    solid info you got there. So in order to free the clutch when pulling the transmission it is necessary to take off the clutch fork pin. I didn't know this when I pulled my engine, so I left the clutch and pressure plate attached to the transmission when I pulled my engine. This was an 02 WRX
    What engine/trans where your original ? 02-05 WRX ?

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      360Sebastian360 yes, you must release the clutch fork! Engine and trans will not separate unless you do so. You probably did one flywheel bolt at a time? My trans was a 2002 WRX 5mt and block was a EJ257.

    Hey man! I was told to do the same trick by a friend of mine. I am glad that your vid confirms it is working. My car is a 95' 4-door STI sedan. If I googled the right thing , my transmission is push type. I have several thing to figure out: 1/ where exactly is this little cap that needs to be removed 2/ what kind of bolts I need to purchase for the push type transmission and where from 3/ I am going to keep my cardan shaft and will cut it to fit the new gearbox. Do you see any problems with my setup and do you think this would work for my car, since my friends car was a WRX, not an STI ? Also can you assist me with finding online these bolts, I am really struglling with this part...
    P.S. I bought the whole swap package from a legacy 3.0 6-speed : gearbox, 4x driveshafts, shifter and differential.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @2:35 you see the cap that needs to be removed with an Allen wrench. The next pic shows that you thread a 10mm bolt into the slide pin and pull it out. The shift fork will now drop. It’s right next to the shift fork on transmission. The shift Fork pivots on this slide pin. If your able to move your shift fork back and forth you should be able to see where it is pivoting on.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I don’t know about the driveshaft length you need. I had a wrx drive shaft that was longer than the sti driveshaft, because the sti transmission is longer.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jiatao Liu I would get it tuned to be safe. The gear ratios change the rpm of the engine. Plenty of people don’t retune with the swap, but I need a tune anyway.
