    This series has been useful for me...I like the tuner list and being able to see your 'end state' but its also affirmed that I do NOT want to buy anyone's swap. I'd prefer knowing my own problems instead of stumbling across others, as you are. Good luck, and keep up the content! This car is otherwise exactly what I'm looking to build here soon...finding coupes that aren't rusty seems to be a challenge.

      Thank you! Getting a good deal I knew there would be some gremlins. At least most of the heavy lifting was done.

    Don't wrap the exhaust is will cause it to rust out and can cause a fire if oil gets on it. Ceramic coat it. Use gold wrap on the intercooler pipeing

      @RoadPatina  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wolfy1091 these are my exact thoughts! I considered wrapping the uppipe but it may end up needing to be replaced and I will go ceramic coated. Gold in the IC pipe will work just not a fan of that much flash!

      Swaintech coating was a huge improvement from from my last time wrapping. Who wants itchyness wrapping headers anyway!

    If it's not your daily just remember that you've got all the time in the world. Whatever you can afford each month until it gets done! It's still cheaper than monthly car payments on a brand new STI. The worst is needing to move or not having a spouse that's ok with your project, if you're not dealing with those two items you're in the clear lol

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jens it kills me to see it sitting covered in dirt! So many things pop up when trying to upgrade/fix one small thing. Moving to a larger garage hopefully in a year so I have time... the spouse does not care and is not allowed in the garage as she tends to "bump" the car with things!

    5:01 this is how i felt when I did my swap recently. The person who owned the donor car made a mess. Broken bolt's missing bolts gaskets not sealed properly. Everytime I thought I was done buying stuffing and fixing things I found more things wrong. A few days before my inspection was due I was planing on starting her up. There was no coolant leaks before I took the engine out and did the swap.
    Well I went to fill the coolant and it starts pissing out by the thermostat . I though it was the hose because I had to cut it to make it fit. Nope after fiddling with it I found a bolt head missing on the thermostat. I flipped out and almost threw the ratchet threw the window. I thought the dude broke the bolt off in the water pump and there was no room to drill it out there. I calmed down after a while and took another look and the bolt was just missing and the guy rtv'd the hell out of the thermostat . I almost sold the car because of the aggravation the swap caused me. It was only supposed to cost 2k to do it by the end spent almost 7k.

      Wolfy1091 you feel my pain! Every single step of the way is an uphill battle. Nobody seems to care as much as we do. How hard is it to do something right? I suppose many people don’t care or have means to do it right the first time. I understand, at times I just want to through all the junk parts back on just to drive the dang car.

    i just bought a 96 coupe a few weeks back and i ripped pretty much everything out of it since the previous owner did such a shitty job of taking care of it. basically EVERYTHING had to come out. i stayed up nights thinking of what to do, if i made a bad choice, or should i bother to continue? i talked to my wife about it and she said she didn't mind the money i spent on it, as long as i did it right and continued to enjoy it, instead of being aggravated and frustrated with it. it took me back to when i used to go to the meets and someone said "none of us are sponsored. we're all working on a budget. we do what we can and it'll be done when possible." keep your head up and remember that it's a marathon, not a sprint. as much as we'd all love to finish a project in a couple of weeks, haha

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ziewknihtewza great words my friend! If we wanted a complete car we would buy a stock one at a dealer. Keep up the good fight. Sometimes I absolutely hate the car, then I remember the feeling I get when boosting through the back roads! They don’t make them anymore, we need clean builds out there that are done right. I would make a realistic budget and then double it! Also, tell the wife as little as possible hhaha.

    I wish that my laundry list was only that long...
    You are doing great! I have found that I get really discouraged if I look at everything to be done. Just take the first thing on your list, plan your work as much as possible by doing research. Perform the work and only that until you need parts or resources. Order those parts and repeat; plan, work, complete or order parts on the next item.
    It is a learning experience, you have a heavier learning curve than most but the great thing it will be your work and time done to your taste. You have a much nicer platform than pretty much everyone I know except my best friend, who bought his '99 RS with 8k miles in 2000 and then started modifying it.
    I made a block off plate between the short ram and the engine, that attaches to the frame rail. Subaru I think still has one for the GD WRX like I'm talking about.
    Also if you are going to reuse that up pipe, cut off that silly steel waste gate flange and get a good thick stainless one welded on. Also have the dump pipe merge back into the down pipe. I think Vibrant has that flange available or check Burns Stainless out there in SoCal. Full Race has what the ideal up pipe should look like, in my opinion.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Troy Fankell much appreciated and great info! I get discouraged often and only get a few hours a week to work on it. Once I get started I always need more parts, then have to push it off till the next week or beyond if parts come in on time. I already purchased a new up pipe as I could not find anyone local to repair this one and they wanted $400+. I always liked the idea to recurc the ewg to keep the noise down. It would have to be a custom job to keep my current down pipe, see above regarding local fabricators 🤦‍♂️ for costs! Think it’s with it? Does it affect the boost when recirculating the ewg? I have herd mixed feelings on it.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would love a block off plate for the intake but with fmic there is an extra pipe to route around.

    • @troyfankell6581
      @troyfankell6581 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RoadPatina It may be too complex shape for your setup with the I/C and intake. This is what my car looked like before I owned it when it was at SEMA. legacycentral.org/images/members/byron/engine_2.jpg
      The block off allows the charge pipe to the front mount to go under and along the top of the frame rail and the intake to go over the top.

    • @troyfankell6581
      @troyfankell6581 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RoadPatina The wastegate being plumbed back into the exhaust is required at certain tracks or events. But it doesn't effect performance if the return is several inches down from the turbo outlet. The recirc is usually referring to the blow-off valve by recirculating the excess boost measured air back into the intake charge.

      @@troyfankell6581 I am going to look around locally for a good fab or exhaust shop.

    So your tuner wants to run all the ports of the EWG? You have an 18G turbo. The bottom port is sufficient..... but i guess. The FMIC piping does suck that it's a clockwise flow. I would run it counterclockwise, but it wouldn't be a problem tuning it whether it's Stainless steel or aluminum. You need a heat shield for the turbo to keep radiant heat away from your piping, wiring, hoses, and IAT sensor. A healthy motor going in for a tune is better than a dying one.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they want me to run all the ports on the EWG and EBC, more vacuum hoses to clean up the engine bay 😂. Wish I had your knowledge as I am learning from my mistakes and are usually costly and repetitive. Turbo blanket purchased already!

    Direct from IAG:
    Q: Which AOS is right for my vehicle?
    A: It is IAG's opinion (which may differ from some builders and tuners) that you should use the following parameters to decide which AOS is correct for your vehicle:
    Less than 600 WHP on pump gas - IAG recommends the Competition Series AOS. The Competition series provides the best venting of the PCV system and also prevents any oil suspended in the PCV gases from re-entering the turbo inlet. If you prefer not to retune the vehicle for installation of the AOS, the Street Series may be used below 600 WHP.
    Less than 600 WHP on E85 - IAG recommends the Street Series AOS
    Greater than 600 WHP on E85 / PUMP GAS / RACE GAS - IAG recommends the Competition Series AOS
    *Please note that IAG recommends the STREET SERIES AOS for ALL cars under 600 WHP running E85 or high-ethanol fuel blends. When tuning E85, ethanol vapors tend to stay in the crankcase, which ultimately results in the oil becoming diluted and requiring extremely frequent oil changes. Pulling vacuum via the Street Series recirculating design to the inlet is ideal for ethanol tuned vehicles, and will allow the ethanol to be removed from the crankcase and burnt off as part of the combustion process. When running greater than 600 WHP on E85 IAG recommends the COMPETITION SERIES AOS and 1500-2000 mile, or every race event, oil change intervals. Please note that the COMPETITION SERIES AOS at any power level will require a custom tune.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am less than 600 WHP on pump and switched over to the street series. Many tuners and engineers in the subie world I spoke with said the engine needs the vacuum for the crankcase. Does more good than harm. Also, some tracks and autocross events require a pcv system. Either way, now I have both!!!.

    • @RoadPatina
      @RoadPatina  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may have gone past that point! They just want everything perfect, if only it was a perfect world.

    • @acquacow
      @acquacow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are all valid concerns and requests for proper air metering. You want consistent IATs when tuning speed density, you also can't mount any sensors in the bottom of the pipe, as that is where water will collect from condensation/etc.
