    Thanks for the presentation! I have germinated tree peony naturally, not harming the seeds. I put seeds in the corner of my garden and cover with onion net bag and left it in May last year. This May when I Checked (May 10) I found almost all the seeds are 2/3 inches tall! Happy to see the success. I just give time and safety of my Tree Peony seeds to grow!

    My tree peony self seeded into lawn and border so I potted up many seedlings , grew them on and gave most as gifts. I have moved house but still have one plant which is now 1m tall. It has not flowered yet, but hope it will soon. Location Scotland.

      Its always exciting to see what their flowers will be like, because they are grown from seed they won't be identical to the parent plant and so may have a new flower shape or colour never seen before. How many years did it take to grow from seed to 1m tall?

      This year my tree peony grown from seed flowered and it produced the same yellow colour as the parent plant. I am now collecting seeds and will try this method as well as planting straight into pots. I am in the North West Highlands of Scotland.

    Where do i need to store the seeds once in the plastic container - a warm place in sunlight such as window sill? A warm place in daylight but not sunlight such as laundry room? Or a warm place in the dark such as a cupboard? Many thanks

    Very interesting! I've heard that from seed it takes five to seven years to produce a mature flower. Do you confirm ? If that's true, I don't think that I would have patience enough.
    I have Peonies in my garden. They disappear in winter and come back vigorously in Spring.
    I think they're infertil. I never got seeds.They have wonderful big white and a bit of pink double flowers and if it doesn't rain they last for a very longtime .
    Looking forward to see your seeds sprouting. Thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful day ☀️!

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes I think that is true, it takes several years until they are large enough to flower. I think its because they have such large flowers and such large fleshy roots that it takes a long time for the plant to build up its root system enough to support the large blooms. I recorded this video in October, so I'll be posting a follow up one soon as they are now germinating.

      isn't it the case that if your flowers are not making seeds, then they weren't getting fertilized by insects? Or perhaps it's also related to age of the plant and its ability to provide enough energy for the flowers to develop the seeds.
      I had some seed pods for many years, didn't seem to get much seeds. Then last year, I got a lot of seed pods, some with viable seeds.

    Hi there, I have germinated some tree peony seeds, I filed the outside of the shell slightly and have had them in a tub since August, two of the seeds have started to grow roots, what would you advise to do with them now? I stay in the North East of Scotland so will have similar weather to yourself.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have slightly strange germination requirements, they need mild temperatures to grow the root, then once the root appears they need to be kept in cold conditions for them to experience a winter. Now that yours have roots place them in a pot of soil and put them outside to experience cold weather, then in spring you should see the new shoots appear. In the first year they are usually very slow growing and will just have two or three leaves. I used to live in Insch so I know how cold it can get where you are, if you have frosts below -5c keep the seeds in an unheated garage or near the house to avoid the coldest temperatures, after their first winter they can survive much colder temperatures once they are planted in the ground.

    I have just harvested over 500 seeds from my peony plants and am going to follow your instructions on how to germinate them, but in your video you said to place these seeds into a warm place?.........theses seeds do not have to go through a cold treatment or stratification process? As I heard most seeds go through this in order to germinate? Thankyou! Love your videos - they are aweseome & easy to follow!

    i'd love to grow peonies from seed. i'll try these methods. do you know what high temps peonies can withstand? I live in Uruguay and my problem are summer high temperatures... For example I've grown lupine, the get lush foliage but never floer and wither in the summer heat.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They should be able to handle summer heat better than a lupin, however they are not tropical plants, and so they need temperatures close to freezing over winter and they won't be too happy if temperatures regularly go over 30C.

      Dear Cathy 111363 I am not sure about the quality, but try AliExpress app on your phone(biggest discounts).
      They sell peony seeds in many different colors(look at reviews and store ratings before buying, because there are some shady sellers) but you must be patient because shipping can take up to 3 months sometimes when not lucky or get lost (does not happen often).
      There are some sellers that sell peony bulbs(search " peony bulb not seeds ") those might wear blooms quicker, try the more expensive because someone posted a picture of the plant that actually is a peony seedling.
      sorry for the long text, hope it helps

    i tried both ways like you did but after a week or so i find mold inside the containers.
    why is that?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mould grows because its a warm moist environment, throw out the tissue, then wash the seeds and container. The seeds should be fine if they are still firm. Place them back into the container with the damp tissue as before but spray the container and seeds with a weak bleach and water solution. This will kill any mould spores, but the seeds will be ok as they have a thick seed coat, and by the time the roots grow the bleach will have become neutralised.

    • @נתידוד-נ3ו
      @נתידוד-נ3ו 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      what do you mean by BLEACH?
      where should i put the containers - cold or warm place?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep it somewhere warm until it germinates, and then once the first root appears transfer it to a cooler location. Use a weak solution of bleach, i.e. sodium hypochlorite, probably the most commonly used sterilising and cleaning product in the world. you will find it in almost any store and most cleaning products. you just want to use a dilute solution and spray it on the tissue, seeds and container. Be careful not to get the bleach on your skin or any fabric as it will stain and cause skin irritation.

    • @נתידוד-נ3ו
      @נתידוד-נ3ו 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn't I leave the containers a bit open for ventilation?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I leave mine sealed as otherwise it dries out too quickly. I open it about once a week to check if its germinated or has become mouldy, when I open it it also allows a bit of fresh air to come in which is important from time to time as it need oxygen. But until it germinates it uses very little oxygen.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How long have they been sitting the the warmth for? Mine took well over a month to grow their first root, then even when I placed them outside to experience cooler weather they didn't appear above soil until summer, they are very slow seeds to germinate. If the seed is still hard and not mushy then its still alive. Did you try cutting through some of the seed coat with a metal file?

    • @Gardeningat58N

      The seeds should still be fine, its a very slow process to germinate tree peony seeds. Make sure that you scratch the seed with a metal file until part of the seed become a pale brown colour. Mine sat for about two or three months before they grew any roots. If you don't sand them down they can take up to two years!! to germinate.
