It really makes us sad when the heroes from our youth pass away. Those who have just started following NASCAR in the last 10 or 20 years don't realize who the true greats really are that made NASCAR. At least NASCAR is making some effort in the last year or two to remember the people that made it great. Rest in peace Cale.
I think the same thing when a racer , actor , athlete or , musician dies and i think to myself , I guess it just means we're getting older , I don't much like change , I like the old music , tv shows and race car races and drivers way more than the present stuff.
When i was a boy i thought Cale Yarborough was the coolest race car driver on the planet. That southern name and that southern sport just clicked in my head. RIP Cale Yarborough.
Real Talk. Bad Ass My 2 Cale autos are 2 of My absolute favorites of all of them OJ Simpson is 1 of My Favorites as well 2 completely opposite peoples though But more similar than We really know
Rick Cale was so very tough . If not the greatest of all Time. I'm so thankful I had pleasure to watch him race . Talk with my cousin whose father raced with Cale . He talk about how funny Cale was . We loved Cale . Heart breaking . When our heroes pass away..
I went to every Daytona 500 & 400 from 1988 until Dale E. died I lost my desire for NASCAR but 1 year I had made it to the garage area when I saw Cale walking I ran after him asking him for a picture he said sure son, man that made my NASCAR experience complete. I met his sister at a feed store and we talked every time I saw her about how he was Cale Y. was a MAN a real man who will be missed by all who saw him race or had the pleasure to meet him. This was a great pod cast thank you all for sharing 👍
Toughest driver on the track. Won 3 straight Winston Cups 76-78. I think they finished every race for about 2-2-1/2 years. Junior was changing transmissions, engines, everything. Sometimes in 30 minutes. Back out on the track when it was legal.
Was so glad to have followed Cales career....was at Darlington in 65 when he went out of the track....was at the 68 Southern 500...Cale said was his all time favorite win....also he made a comment about his daddy who passed when Cale was young...he said he told him...Son always be yourself...if people dont like how you are now...they not going to like the person you try to be....and he lived that....also he looked after his mother..who only passed a few years ago....Great show..
Legends like Cale Yarborough made Nascar great. Thank you for recording stories like these from some of the folks that lived them. My heroes in the sport come from the 70s and 80s. Forever THE Golden Era in my book.
One of the greatest stockcar racers of all time. As a kid growing up and watching nascar, i can still remember cale Yarbrough name, buddy baker,Richard petty, davey Allison, benny parson, junior Johnson, though names stuck out to me to this day. That was when nascar was great and fun to watch.
I was fortunate enough to meet Cale back in the mid 90's @ Portland Speedway. I walked up to him and pulled out 1979 original photo of him that my friends @ Racing Wheels Newspaper gave me. He said " Holy shit son! Where'd you come up with that photo?" I sat and shot the shit with him for a few minutes. As a true fan of NASCAR and it's legends, it was a absolute honor getting to meet Cale in person! He was there to run as a special quest in a late model stock car for Winners Edge tobaccoless chew, who also sponsored one of local late model drivers.
I was such a huge Cale fan, thanks so much guys for all the cool and funny history.. so good to hear everyone tell their stories and loved to hear Waddel reminisce about his experiences. And Thanks to the Vault crew for all you do in bringing these shows to us, Iv been watching many of them. I met Danny Culler which you had an awesome interview with, when I drove Burt Myers race hauler to Thompson Speedway back around 2010 or 2011 when he was spotting for Burt, we hung out and had a great time. Rest in Peace Champ. Danny Bollinger In Winston Salem. ;0)
My dad named me after Cale I'm 39 I have his middle name story will never forget in 1979 my father friend called in and said Cale caused that wreck he told him next time he seen him he was going to whoop his friends ass love that old school memory
Cale ,in my heart was one of the true real drivers and real people of his time. He turned my Dad down to drive a USAC hemi Charger built by Nichols here in Indiana. A man of true character! A man of his word . Is his bear still living?
I remember sitting on the tailgate of a Chevy Dooley in the rain in the infield at Pennsboro Speedway eating shrimp coctails with Cale Yarborough . He was one of a kind .
Wonderful job guys doing this discussion and tribute to one of the greatest drivers ever. I was at the race at Asheville-Weaverville Speedway when Cale and Benny got their tryout with Holman-Moody. Great memories of one of the greatest periods of Nascar racing. Keep up the goof work.
Thanks Rick & Steve. Ive listened to every episode you guy's have done. I look forward to Wednesday's. Sometimes i binge listen white im at work in the dozer or loader. I have been hoping/praying that Rick could have talked Cale into doing an interview. As i understand, Cale wouldn't do it for free. So i don't blame Rick. And no, it doesn't change the way i feel about Cale Yarbrough. Massive respect! I like the story about Jr & Cale crashing the olabe during landing, hitting a parked dozer & jr jumped out way before the plane hit. Awesome story
It was great to hear the stories, Ronnie Bouchard, David Ifft and my Dad were part of the Race Hill Farms team. I remember the open hotel doors and room cruising was what the crews did. I remember Steve Hmiel and Kyle came running in the hotel room. Kyle began jumping on my Mom and Dad's hotel bed. Steve was teaching my one year old how to cut the room light off and on. Dad knew Cale pretty good I think.
It's really great to hear these guys reminisce about Cale, thank you so much for doing this and putting it up! Curious - Which race is that poster in the background from where all the cars and crew are lined up on pit road?
LeRoy was probably the only driver that drove harder than Cale. Past few years I was wanting to talk to Cale about LeRoy and his thoughts on his untimely deterioration and knocking the taste out of Big Bill's mouth lol.
No disrespect! But my question is! My does everyone wait till someone passes to talk about and pay respect for someone. Myself if you can't bring it when I'm alive to hear it! Just save it to your memory.

What memories when racing was real

Great discussion. Even though all we got about Daytona 1979 was Waddell saying his team was out before lap 2.

Let's take all the safety stuff and put it in old cars that are hard to drive
I remember the smile he showed in picture I saw year's back. #28 Hardee's Chevrolet.
Thanks for putting this roundtable together. I really enjoyed listening to it.

Cale was definitely the Anti-Petty crowd, and that was hard to do, hats off Old Boy
Waddell said his favorite tracks were Daytona & Talladega. Those favored his "Waddell Winders".
It's really great to hear these guys reminisce about Cale, thank you so much for doing this and putting it up!

Back in the day! Cale was my guy always pulled for him I wish I would’ve put some money on him I’d probably be rich now lol
I remember a race where Richard Petty ran out of gas and coasted to line and I believe it was Cale that beat him to the line. I was a little kid.
The 1979 Daytona 500, And there's a fight!
and back then NO BODY HAD more horsepower than Waddell
This is the first real dive into Cale Yarborough , Dale JR. Hasn't even mentioned him what's up with that
🏁👍
No disrespect! But my question is! My does everyone wait till someone passes to talk about and pay respect for someone. Myself if you can't bring it when I'm alive to hear it! Just save it to your memory.
When I see comments like this, I can be sure it's from someone that isn't old enough to understand the answer.
Who the heck is talking in the back ground? Cant understand the guy.
