Dude Stephen is very unique, without him deftones would not be the same, he has a very unique style and he changes that style in every album. I hope Chi gets better I wanna see him on the stage.
yea... he sounded so enthusiastic when he mentioned it. This was before Chi even had his accident. Pretty surreal stuff. And now the guys in the band dont even want to say that word.
Stef is without a doubt my favourite guitarist. I absolutely love listening to him talk about his guitars. And, if I might add, his signature 7-string, the ESP LTD SC-607b, is one of the best guitars I've ever played. First time I got the chance, I bought it, and it's everything I had dreamed of.
When I was 11, my best friends stepdad was their tour manager for Warped Tour 98, so I got to go hang on their bus all day when they played here. Steph also stayed in my buddys house for a couple weeks. He'd come over and swim in my pool, and me him and my buddy biked around our quiet street. I was only 11 so I didnt realize how fuckin cool that was. Wish it woulda been now! I remember sittin in their house once, and steph kept laughing and askin me "Why you trippin dude? Why you trippin?"
Did anybody see what the pedals were? All I grabbed out of that were Boss BF3 Flanger, Boss Tremolo 2, Boss Hyperfuzz and a few Zvex pedals. This is what he was using until Eros when he expanded into Ax effects and pretty much ditched the pedals. Before White Pony he was all pedals. I found some pictures of the pedals he used in this video but the names are all covered up
3:25 - (From Deftones / Spinal Tap) When Steph starts talking about his (8 string) guitar with the two E. strings, and how he learned it from touring with LIMP and Wes B. how it's a six string but with two E strings - basically this was his "going to 11 on the amp" moment from Spinal Tap for me, lol
How the hell did he learn how to use such an elaborate effects setup? Do the guitar techs teach him and advise him on what to use? It seems so complex. Also, does anyone know how stef's 5-string bass is tuned?
MIDI is very confusing at first, you just gotta keep at it man, it's A LOT of tweakin! But well worth it if you feel like spending the time. Obviously, Steph, gets such an original sound, and was one of the reasons I tried out MIDI rack mounted processors.
Ok, so if I understand and have been figuring out their songs correctly (for the most part, anyway) Adrenaline is standard tuning, Around the Fur is tuned down a half-step then the low "E" string is tuned to C#, and White Pony is drop-C tuning. I know on self-titled Stephen used a 7-string so I really haven't bothered figuring out any songs from that album, SNW or Diamond Eyes (because he went to the 8-string on DE). Does anyone know what tuning is used on the last three albums?
i know what you mean, but he does not use all 6 of those at the time. he can have the main one and the back up for the main. and have another one with a different tunning and a back up for it. while he is playing a song the roadie can change up the tunning of it and the back up
@karnivorus look at it this way, the lowest you can tune a six string before it sounds to start like shit is A, and a 7 string is a mix between A standard and D standard, if you play the first six strings its DGCFAD and you have your not so low songs and if you play the last 6 strings its like A standard ADGCFA, so yea a 7 string is a versatile instrument, you can get low end not tuning so low as to where with a 6 you have to tune 7-9 tones lower to get the same sound.
@spazemunky he said it in the video. Keeps the standard tuning also keeps the 7string feel. Back when I uses to play it was weird switching from 6 to 7 string with neck thickness and all.
4 might be enough for most people but he has 6 different tunings, which will be 7 different tunings when the new album comes out... Plus he needs a back up for each of those 6 or 7 guitars...
"just got this 14 string, tuned to drop z. the sparkles in the paint are actually blood diamonds shipped directly from Africa, and the tuners are made from platinum with a ruby accent on the high E"
@Lhavia009 he gets guitars from the esp custom shop i think, but the sc-607b is the closest guitar to that one. if you wanted one like that and want to save money, then you could get the sc-607b and get a refinish on it. esp custom shop guitars can take over a years wait and about $5000.
@Blitzzkreigg yeah i know how a 7 string works, I own two myself. What I am saying is that usually a 7 string is not tuned higher then B. Any higher tuning you don't need a 7 string really.
Did you get it professionally set up to the tuning you like. Cause I have 4 Schecters and they all stay in tune. I have two of them in standard tuning DADGBE and the other two are tuned a hole step down to CGCFAD. And they stay in tune all the time. I didnt play then for three weeks . When I picked them up they were still in tune. Just need to have the right String gauge for the down tuned shit. I have 11-52 on the Dadgbe and 13-54 on the CGCFAD.
Does anybody know how to hook up those subs to a normal rig? Right now I’m running a kemper. Planning on running a power amp, thinking about literally getting the ones stef used. (The Marshall) so I’m just wondering how those isp subs work and how to hook them up without blowing shit up! If anybody could help out I’d appreciate it! Thank you! 🥂
Nope,Adrenaline-Eb,Around The Fur-Drop Db,White Pony-Drop C,Deftones-Ab(7 string),Saturday Night Wrist-Drop F#(7 string),Eros- the 8 string,not sure if it's in F# or F possibly drop E
hahaha OMG..when i heard the song Diamond Eyes i was like damn this song sounds like the heavy rythmic tech of Meshuggah with the beauty and ambiatness off circa survive...now i see why
are all the songs from Saturday Night Wrist in F#? also I´ve seen him using the red "gay" guitar on blood cape live, i thought blood cape was in standard G#?
my small mind is confused...I want to check out the saturday night tuning..he says its in dropped C but the G# is down to F# but I'm not seeing a G# string tuned when down to C...ugh
@Lhavia009 i really like deftones, so getting a esp ltd sc-607b, thats about $1000 usd. there are some good ibanez 7 strings under $1000 like the ibanez rg7321, the rga7 and s7420
Dude Stephen is very unique, without him deftones would not be the same, he has a very unique style and he changes that style in every album. I hope Chi gets better I wanna see him on the stage.

This video makes me so glad to be a drummer.
that is definitely a joint in his hand. hahah he's an awesome guitar player and he is just a chill dude
When he mentioned Eros... I felt that...
yea... he sounded so enthusiastic when he mentioned it. This was before Chi even had his accident. Pretty surreal stuff. And now the guys in the band dont even want to say that word.
he talks about eros

"buncha dope ass guitars" well played sir well played
4:57 "So gay but SO HAWT"! Gotta love Steph's sense of humor.
😂😂
this is like a cribs episode, but with guitars, OMG this guy has the most awesome guitars, more beautifuls than most of "shred guitars"

"A legendary unit far behond my skill level... but look at all those LIGHTS! Spectacular!" lol
Why didn't he mention their self-titled album at all? I honestly have got to say that is one of my favorites.
man i love this guys set up and the geetars.. dammmm yeah
esp tele 7 string. Now that I wanna try.
It’s cool to see his rig pre-AxeFX. This vid popping into my feed is like a time machine!
I wish I was so rich, I could afford to have 2 guitars for each tuning I use...
His guitars and his amps looks amazing
anyone notice the Louis Vuitton paint job on one of his ESPs?
MR B what about the Gucci one? Have you seen it? Looks phat
That sky blue ESP Stephen's got looks awesome
My man from the Deftones, showing Tony Stewart some love with that orange #20
🤘😎👍
Why the hell did they cut out the part where he's talking about the self-titled album?
Did anybody see what the pedals were? All I grabbed out of that were Boss BF3 Flanger, Boss Tremolo 2, Boss Hyperfuzz and a few Zvex pedals. he is so under rated!!!!! he's up there with frusciante, jack white, and zakk
How the hell did he learn how to use such an elaborate effects setup? Do the guitar techs teach him and advise him on what to use? It seems so complex. Also, does anyone know how stef's 5-string bass is tuned?
He actually did this on "Needles and Pins" from the s/t album.

@bravedwarf Nope, Adrenaline is in E standard tuning/Drop D, Deftones is in G# standard and Diamond Eyes is in F# standard 8 string.
Anyone know what he used to record Adrenaline? I fucking love his tone!
Jarl Meemorp ugh!! I'm trying to find out too!! :(
I love gear tours like this. Nice video
@ZenotheMetalWarrior Thanks for comment :)
i know what you mean, but he does not use all 6 of those at the time. he can have the main one and the back up for the main. and have another one with a different tunning and a back up for it. while he is playing a song the roadie can change up the tunning of it and the back up

@spazemunky he said it in the video. Keeps the standard tuning also keeps the 7string feel. Back when I uses to play it was weird switching from 6 to 7 string with neck thickness and all.
@6XstringXsamurai the opening of engine no 9 is played on the low E string fyi.

"just got this 14 string, tuned to drop z. the sparkles in the paint are actually blood diamonds shipped directly from Africa, and the tuners are made from platinum with a ruby accent on the high E"
@ZomgNinjah Yeah he did, if you watch the You've seen the Butcher video you can clearly see the 8-string.
around the fur is on standard tunning and D tunning on 6 string gtar
@Lhavia009 the cost depends on how customised the model is
@Lhavia009 he gets guitars from the esp custom shop i think, but the sc-607b is the closest guitar to that one. if you wanted one like that and want to save money, then you could get the sc-607b and get a refinish on it. esp custom shop guitars can take over a years wait and about $5000.

@Vinnygotnoodles from needles and pins and a few other songs, he plays bass through his guitar amp
Anyone know the settings for the hyper fuzz pedal? I have a very similar pedal and would like to get something close to the sound
An ESP Stef T7, only available in Japan and I heard Australia.
weird to hear him refer to the "Eros" album, now there's been two albums that have come out and Eros is still not out.
I always love these gear videos.
.. So the self titled album is in g# standard tuning? (Stephen guitars not necessary Chino and chis guitars)
ONE BIG LOVE FOR STEPHE!!!
The Deftones make the World a better place.
@StlyeFree Hey, thanks! I'm hoping this will come in handy. I hope to add a 7-string to the arsenal pretty soon.
Did you get it professionally set up to the tuning you like. Cause I have 4 Schecters and they all stay in tune. Why would you cut out him talking about the guitar subwoofers?
is there an editing error or a 3:29 does he forget to say he used G# tuning for the self titled album?
He plays a bass guitar in "Needles and Pins" from the self-titled.
Does anybody know how to hook up those subs to a normal rig? Right now I’m running a kemper. Planning on running a power amp, thinking about literally getting the ones stef used. @Lhavia009 yea its on the esp website some of the guitars in this vid are in the gallery
what is the song that begins when stephen show the guitars? 2:46
The first song is engine no. 9
yes
There is a posibilty that exist a video with Stephen performacing Lotion?
I cant find a good tab about this song
I love steph :')
he actually plays bass live for i-dont-remember-which song, 2 bass players at the same time
I think he said he put the high e tuning on the bottom strings so for Adrenaline the tuning might be like EADGBee.
5:08 It's been 10 fucking years, release it already!
i checked steve vai's, batio's, john 5's, and malmsteen's already. although i can't find petrucci's. only talks about his effect settings
Dam dude
i really want to meet Deftones soo bad!
I'm getting my schecter C-7 cuz i wanna learn their songs!
Cant wait till they come to AZ again
hahaha OMG..when i heard the song Diamond Eyes i was like damn this song sounds like the heavy rythmic tech of Meshuggah with the beauty and ambiatness off circa survive...now i see why
now he has 8-strings tuned to C# and octave below the sixth string.
@Skaterrocker842 it's off the white pony album, i suggest you buy it, it's an amazing album. pink maggit is awesome.
Some songs he does do that! If you look closely in the video you will see a bass he plays as a guitar on his rack.
How is he using the 7strings for tunings above B?
@SkyPil0t i can read. im just commenting on the fact that eros was never released
I think it might be -E A D G B E A- using a high E gauge (.09) for the high A. I could be wrong though
Yeah, great video, but I would like it even more if Stephen played one or two of his guitars.
what kind of pedal controller is that that he uses?
i have a jmp 1 , somebody can please tell me if with the ground controll from voodoo lab i can save distortions in the unit ?
What was the song in the background?
Anyone know the song from the intro?
woooo! nascar fan!!
are all the songs from Saturday Night Wrist in F#? also I´ve seen him using the red "gay" guitar on blood cape live, i thought blood cape was in standard G#?
I'm pretty sure he can do what he wants. He's pretty sucessful.
He has quite the gear collection.
0:08 Song?
Engine No. 9 off Adrenaline (1995)
He uses the 8s in standard (for now)
Ima noob too, but I'm pretty sure iso is short for isolated so he may use it for recording.
soooooo does he mainly use digital effects?
whats the song that plays at the begining?
Carpenter's such a cool guy!
anyone know the status on Eros? Is it comming out?
my small mind is confused...I want to check out the saturday night tuning..he says its in dropped C but the G# is down to F# but I'm not seeing a G# string tuned when down to C...ugh
cool thanks Mark
G# C# F# B E G# C# than you drop the low G# to F#
@Lhavia009 i really like deftones, so getting a esp ltd sc-607b, thats about $1000 usd. there are some good ibanez 7 strings under $1000 like the ibanez rg7321, the rga7 and s7420
whats the song playing at 1:59?
