    It would be fitting, I think, to mount the TH-cam “silver button” in the technical compartment. Happy New Year !!

    I am absolutely shocked that you haven't reached the 100 K level before now... You've always been an awesome channel and pretty much every sailing channel that I subscribe to are mentioning you or quoting you, and have been for years... Well deserved congratulations !!.. I feel like you've finally gotten that overlooked by the Oscars nod lol.

    You have earned that button, Mads.....and Ava. I've been along for the ride since the number was about 20k, and I know of no one who has put more effort and thought into a "somewhat extensive refit" that those of us in my neck of the woods would call a complete rebuild, ground up restoration. You are a regular guy who got lucky with a special lady, and are preparing to live the best part of your lives. As all this work, all the filming, and all the days run together, take it from a guy married to his high school sweetheart for 43 years...stop, enjoy, take it all in, and extract every ounce of life from every day, because time truly does fly.

    On behalf of those of us undergoing our own "somewhat extensive refit" I'd like to say thanks for your channel. There are times where I get depressed about the time and difficulty level associated with all the work I still have left to do on my own boat but your channel and your optimism always gives me hope. Best wishes for a great 2022.

Refitting Athena has easily become my favorite and has brought much joy and many smiles over the years! Athena is a sailboat to be admired in every way and I thank you for sharing your fantastic journey!! All the best for 2022 Mads and Eva.

    Of all the years of this somewhat extensive refit I think 2021 represents the culmination of the significant investment of time you have been made in restoring and improving Athena. But 2021 also represented a significant change of pace which seemed to accelerate as the Schengen clock ticked and brought lots of mini projects to a conclusion and saw the sum of cosmetic finishes complete to such a stunning effect. Setting up for a series drogue - have you seen Roger Taylor’s (Ming 2) video of using these he is absolutely convinced it has saved the situation for him - but in Ming 2 he went further and thought about how to speed up and simplify deployment which he believes is equally important. Worth a look. Congratulations for recruiting so many subscribers into what is,by definition, a minority interest compared to doing make up or cute little kittens. Well done for 2021 and 2022 beckons for another exciting chapter.😀👍⛵️

    The biggest optimization for the cone process that I can see is to strip sow them or basically take one cone prepared as you have it, and then once the end of the webbing on that cone is at the back of the foot, insert the next cone under the front of the presser foot. After a little bit of practice, you can get to the point where you can do many of them through the machine without ever stopping the sewing machine. Tip from a quilter who assembles blocks this way.

Looking at this video made me realize I've been following you for about all these years and feeling with you on the various steps you made to where you two are today. Saying something like "if this diy man might ever find a lady to join him" and I don't know how many other glorious quotes. You are an example for many with your perseverance. And although to my taste you have a bit to much goodies on your boat your devotion is mind-blowing. Keep up the video's, I love to be 1 of 100K, and I can't wait to see the start of your first crossing, the gulf of Biscay ! (also for this reason very interested in the series drogue! ;).

    If you are going across the Atlantic and oceans you have a good chance of being caught out in a F7 or more. In my humble opinion there are a few things below decks you could do with like fiddles on the edge of work surfaces, more hand holds, Lee cloths etc.

    Definitely it was a great year for Athena, lots of hardworking make it look so beautiful and make her fully ready to sail all over the world. To avoid some issues on the future and make all things easier, I think to have a personal NAS to storage all the channel files would be a great addition, to have all Athena digital life ready on the go. Also a die cutter would make all those sewing cutting patterns so much easier and faster, and could be useful too in some other projects, like make labels, templates to cut and align items, patches, make some designs over a material to decorate, make birthday and Christmas postcards and so, they are really useful.
    Hope you have a great 2022 guys. Cheers

    Congratulations you two! Now, I've spotted your mast head camera in action... Mads, go into it's Web page and turn the IR lights off. Unless you're in small room they're useless. The Raymarine cameras are amazing in low light, but if you need to illuminate use a spot light, it works a treat. We have a forward aft mast mounted flood lights which serve this and other purposes really well... now, back to your video! Hahaa, video finished. 2021 is all about Eva. Mads, you make us blokes weak at the knees with your commitment and all round skills, Eva is back at our level and adds another dimension to the videos. We'll done to the pair of you! Mads, that boat is nearly finished, just what will you do with all that spare time? Of course, you have Eva, and your channel will be a sailing channel! Just one other comment, I too studied drogues, but, just when are you going sailing when a force 9, or more, is forecast... never, I hope. Useful for when the Orcas knock your rudder off though! Sailing is such good fun, honest, now what's next on he DIY list?!!

    • @Garryck-1
      @Garryck-1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *"but, just when are you going sailing when a force 9, or more, is forecast... [?]"*
      When crossing oceans, one doesn't always get the weather one hopes for, and weather bombs can spring up too quickly to avoid. (And with climate change kicking up a gear in coming years, extreme and unpredictable weather events are going to become more common.) A JSD is cheap last-resort insurance against an eventuality one hopes to never encounter. Better to have it, and never need it, than need it, and not have it.
      *"Useful for when the Orcas knock your rudder off though!"*
      Actually, a JSD makes for a pretty bad emergency rudder (it slows the boat too much). There are smaller drogues available that make for far better emergency steering devices, but are not so good at 'ultimate storm' survival.

    • @bobrose7900
      @bobrose7900 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Garryck-1 Yes! you're absolutely right.. and a soft drogue takes up minal space and they weigh very little. And yes we have one. Just watch it doesn't need wrap the prop. Grib files are important for weather predictions and we deemed a system with backup was the first priority. Hello Iridium, just watch the cost.

    • @Garryck-1
      @Garryck-1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Pheeeew. That was a "somewhat extensive" progress for a simple year! I started watching when you did your first sailing with Obelix. Now look at that. I am a witness of a DIY fairy tale.
    You deserve my personal platinum diamond moonstone TH-cam award, I am sure I watched not all videos once, but twice or some of them even many MANY more times (by the factor of 10: the hilarious episode installing that nasty wifi range extender). I have a "Sail Life" sticker on my car and I am so proud of it. You are part of my life and I coulnd't be happier to be a fellow follower.
    Here is my question for an upcoming Q&A: What do you feel, when you walk along the dock and see Athena? Do you see a boat, a project, a part of your life or just a sailing vessel?
    All the best to you two. Thank you for having me. Uwe

    I studied drogues and ended up adopting Skip Novak's viewpoint which is to simply heave to in really bad weather/seas. Drogues can be difficult and dangerous to recover. Having said that I do keep small steering drogues in case of rudder or steering mechanism failure. Totally just my opinion and I'm a single-hander which influences my thinking. You need some pretty hefty cleats and certainly a winch maybe with a powered winch handle.

    • @Garryck-1
      @Garryck-1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not so impressed by Skip Novak's perspective on this. There can come a point in a really bad storm where heaving to is no longer effective, as a few people have learned the hard way. Also, Skip disses the JSD out of hand, whilst admitting that *he's never even tried using one!* I have a lot of respect for him, but to me, that's the height of arrogance. I'd have respected him more if he'd simply admitted that he wasn't qualified to hold an opinion about them. I suspect he's gotten a little set in his ways and is beginning to believe in his own legend.
      Also, *"[y]ou need some pretty hefty cleats"* ... rubbish. A FAR better way to go is a pair of heavy-duty horizontally-mounted chainplates at the stern. That way, all the forces are transmitted to the hull in a straight line through the center of mass, instead of having to traverse right angles mounted higher up. See what Roger Taylor did with 'Mingming 2' for an example of how to do a JSD properly.

    for the Q&A - i've been watching your channel for several years now, and since the majority of that time has NOT been out sailing, i've often wondered something....if my memory is correct, back when you had just purchased Athena in Scotland, and made the journey back home, it seemed that you got pretty seasick on the journey. I've wondered if, after all of the years of hard work getting Athena refit, you (and not Ava) would still struggle with seasickness and have any regrets about full time life on the water. the month or so you spent getting to the UK didn't mention any motion sickness, but you were motoring in calm water.....so, any motion sickness concerns?

    Do you have any kitchen island worktop left over? A piece on top of charging area/box would be a nice addition.

    Those analog instruments look beautiful. They are works of art as well as sources of information. It makes me want some for my non-boat office.

    I believe on RAN Sailing he used a Drogue to get back to Hawaii when he lost his Rudder. So might be a good idea to have options.

    Amazing progress this year! You get more done in month, then most do in a year, keep going on the DIY projects. I've learned so much about boats from your channel.

    Excellent episode summarizing your accomplishments this year, wow, although I watched every one, I had forgotten the extent of your accomplishments. Btw, you forgot to mention Eva’s great decorating accomplishments for the festive season. Your videos are excellent, well planned, well executed& edited and no wonder you hit the 100k club. 👌👌
    Can’t wait for what 2022 will bring, besides many additional subscribers.

    Great review of the year, Mads. It all looks so simple when you do it like that. I didn't notice the subscriber number but I am not surprised. I think your channel will continue to grow, as I hear you getting mentions on other channel I watch. Thanks for sharing.
