My grandfather died from siderosis. So, noise is not the worst part. But someone have to do this job.
Back around 1955, when I was at school, I loved our class book, which was a biography of James Naysmith, who was a Scottish engineer, philosopher, artist and inventor famous for his development of the steam hammer. Even in those early days of steam, his machine was so controllable that he could pound red-hot metal forgings, or crack an egg in a wineglass without damaging the glass.
James Naismith was the name of the inventor of basketball too.

I worked in a foundry for a few years and thankfully I wore masks for the dust. These workers no masks I can't imagine what their lungs look like. It's not just dust either.
I am amazed by the health and safety measures, guys withou helmet running around etc. Life seems to be cheap in some places
If something falls off one of those machines a damn helmet isn't going to do you a damn bit of good! If you did not notice the machines and their parts are not small!

i’ve been working near that thing before, but not that BIG, it was 5x smaller and man it shook your whole body, they said it’s considered dangerous for your health if you’re exposed to the vibration for a long time.

I worked in a metal factory right out of high school. Left because a guy right before I came had lost a thumb, and then my friend almost got killed by human error. A guy didn't secure a pallet of metal sheets and it fell from a ceiling crane right next to him. Shook the building. He would've died. I was like, nope. I'm not gonna die at twenty for a hard labor minimum wage job filled with ex cons. Went and worked for Sonic Drive-in instead xD

Some years ago the fork lift company I worked for sold a 20 ton lift truck to a company who were in this industry. I was in charge of all new trucks before delivery to the customer the machine had to be built with special protection to the tyres and had a special double glazed windscreen.The machine was prepared in our workshop and delivered to the customer. A week after delivery I was asked to go to site find out why the forks had failed at the heel. This is a big deal in the lift truck industry and should never happen even if the truck is overloaded. I went to site and was taken into a building with a box inside very similar to the one at 8.00. They lifted the canopy and revealed a block of white hot metal we were stood 20 yards away and the heat was unbelievable, the fork truck approached the furnace and lifted the block out. I couldn't believe it no wonder the forks had failed the heat transfer into the forks then the forks cooling down then being reheated was taking all the temper from the forks. I don't know what happened after I reported my findings.
...sounds like a prime location for some custom made 409 stainless steel forks (or the vastly more expensive Inconel.) That would be a high dollar set of forks right there !

Pressure vessel, plane parts (ex: landing gears), other heavy machinery parts, ships
Big forge like take are expensive to run, but they can produce really high quality parts.
Check out the "heavy press videos" there's a video on TH-cam explaining how America got it's heavy presses and what they are used for, they were originally designed ( heavy press is like 50,000 tons or greater of force) for airplane production by the Germans in ww2. Americans have used them for planes, the ISS, space crafts and I do believe some ships aswell
We used to buy forged rings such as these for check valves as you can trepann out the middle on a lathe. Then we put them on a four jaw Chuck and turn them . On valves five feet and over you need to start with something as the sheer weight makes everything hard

These factories are always building things for other machines, tools, construction etc, but, how did they build these big machines back in the day when these machines did not exist to create those large machines?
I doubt it was "lets build a small forging machine, which will help us build a even bigger forging machine, which will help us build an EVEN bigger forging machine....."
@nystewart, Before the forging process was invented, there were things being sand-casted to whatever shape & size the metal part was needed... But the forging machines were developed to create extremely tough parts that could take a lot of punishment and last a very long time... This film shows how these improved designs are made... The faces of the machine dies are extremely tough and made of special materials specifically for this purpose... I worked at a place that had a shop that had a drop-forging machine with several dies and a high energy rate forming (HERF) machine that could - upon request fabricate various parts from aluminum, titanium, stainless-steel, inconel, sheet... The shop was located on a large aircraft maintenance facility, that primarily maintained their fleet of planes... Anyway, it was impressive how these old craftsmen operated in that place, and a real good learning experience of how work like this was done... But the factories - like in this video had HUGE amounts of production as compared to that job-shop that I was at...

The flames coming out the hot billet is actually gas escaping the metal. Being hammered creates high pressure which in turn creates plasma which you can see.

The world history of extreme heavy presses is quite amazing. As spoils of war the U.S. moved the largest presses to help elevate our aircraft effort allowing planes to be manufactured with fewer parts and greater strength.

Used to work on forges like these years ago replacing the old analogue electronics for PLC controls , however there is a distinct lack of PPE.
I doubt ppe would let them do the job properly and efficiently, plus if you can't stay away from a hot ass piece of metal then you shouldn't be working there 🤓

I dont think most people realise that some of these massive metal fabrications can only be made in a few locations in the world, with equipment specifically configured or built for the part. These guys really are keeping the world turning. I mean how many factories in the world do you think can make sections of an oil rig leg.

Each one varies but most times you see forging this size it's for extremely large earth moving machinery or parts for presses the reason that the parts are so heavy and bulky is do to the amount of machining it's going to get or not get because this type of work can and will cause cracks to form in the finish product and with a crack you'll have failure so they either make it way to big to handle the stress or to big to make sure it's got enough stock to be removed to get rid of any cracks formed

Mr McCall, In my opinion at 12:20, when the worker is measuring the depth of the center hole It looks pretty dangerous to me: If the hidraulic hammer has a malfunction or the controller is distracted... try to figure it out the consequences.

Yeah I've been to a place called McWilliams Forge in New Jersey. Huge huge hammers. It would shake the parking lot when these things are working. Everything around that place was just orange rust around the back of that building
