  • Gold Dust Day Geckos (Phelsuma laticauda) in the wild on Moorea Island, French Polynesia.
Gold dust day geckos from northern Madagascar and vicinity have now colonized Moorea to keep an eye on tourists. These vibrant little gems have also made their way to Hawaii. I’m not sure if they came straight to Moorea from Madagascar or if they did some sight seeing in Hawaii first. These vibrant little gems eat mostly bugs, soft fruits, pollen and nectar.
Most geckos around the world are nocturnal. Their large, situated, light-sensitive eyes can follow prey or predator movements while their head remains stealthy still. Day geckos have smaller eyes and like us, have to turn their heads and look over their shoulders to make sure you’re not up to any mischief. This gives them the cutest little personality and a good bet why the video game Gex and GEICO insurance chose this species over their more mysterious seeming nocturnal cousins.

Can’t imagine you’re eating dinner and you look up and there he is trying to sell you GEICO insurance.

Why do geckos have to be so cute? Now I want a gecko... or 3 or 4. But I can't afford to feed pets right now 😔.

Definitely a cool little specimen. It’s also one I’m not too familiar with, not that I know of every type of lizard by any means but I have usually at least heard of them. Very cool brother👍🇺🇸

Trust me, plenty of its relatives are not nocturnal. I went to Sanibel Island (Florida) a few years ago and there were cute little geckos all over the place during the day and doing funny mating displays or doing push-ups when another gecko trespasses in their territory.

I can't think of any animal I dislike.
I'm planning a trip to Australia here soon, and I can see myself trying to cuddle a taipan and dying.

That being said, there are some critters that I would not approach under any circumstances.
      Like hippos.
Not even Steve Irwin would get close to a hippo.

how to end my arachnophobia hank? really , have some serious ptsd from childhood

You just gotta go stand by spiders. Eventually the fear will seize and turn to boredom. I was attacked by bees and hospitalized a couple days. Came out with a phobia. It took me about 2 or 3 weeks standing by bee n wasp nests to deprogram / desensitize the fear. You can do it!

Kind of a random question, but I’ve got to ask: with how much you love critters, do you fish at all? Gotta imagine the fishing in some of these tropical locales would be phenomenal.

I'm usually trying to get photos and video if I'm out in nature. If the water is semi-clear, I'm usually wet.

Is there any similarity (other than slightly looking similar) of these to the anoles here in our country? Of course our anoles are rather bland and small next the what you show here but they do remind me a little one one another. Especially in the head area.

Other than both being lizards, not really.
