Patara, you are so right! Some breeds of hens tend to be more broody than others. And I just love it when I have "new life" on the farm and baby chicks are one of the best.

Hi Patara. Christine from Australia here. I had 2 broody chooks. A gold kaced Wyandotte and a Buff Orpington. No rooster. My friend gave me fertile eggs. Great. 6 eggs each. after going through the eggs and finding none were viable. When they had been sitting the 3 wks or so I bought 5 day old chicks and put 3 under one heb and 2 under the other. the Wyandotte ended up stealing the buffs chicks too. NOW however I have 5 chicks being looked after by 1 Wyandotte, 1 buff orpington and 1 rhode island red bantam. they all make the noises to look at food. they all sit together to sleep with the babies. they all hang around each other. I think it's just gorgeous.

You literally answered every question I had. I got my first chickens (silkies) and my hen had 3 chicks 2-10-20 and two died and I brought one in. And put him in a brooder and got him/her some friends Cochins and barred rocks and they’re all doing fine

Between the view on your front porch and new chicks I don't see how you get anything else done. They are all so adorable. Is Buttercup mothering the chicks in the black tote? I hope this question comes out right. Are there hens that will just mother are another hens chicks? So when a Silkie broody mama hatches them you could give them to another hen to raise. Thanks for the great video Patara.

I was wondering if you immunize your baby silkies against Mereks disease or any other diseases. I was going to purchase a dozen one day old Bantams including silkies but I had to cancel the order and get larger, hardier chicks that will be immunized. Most places do not immunize these little chicks (any bantams including silkies) I couldn't take a chance because I heard that this disease can wipe out the entire flock. I just want to know how you stand on the subject of immunizing chicks. Thanks

That's right, no heat source in your coop. It isn't needed so it's not worth the risk. If I don't need one in Northern Saskatchewan in Canada, with -40+ winters, you don't need one.

I am planning on getting chickens in the spring. I haven't done this since I was a kid. The silkies are so cute. Would it be a bad idea to get them, since they tend to go broody if I don't plan on increasing the flock? I only have a small space and do not think that I should have any more then 2 or 3.Thanks for any help.

I have a few questions! I'm new at raising chickens! I do not have a rooster! I bought my baby girls 1 year ago!
Due to the county laws I am only allowed to have 5 chickens which makes no sense cause you can only buy them in a six pack in our area! Ha!
any how, was wondering if you do the wood ash bath in the winter time and would love to see a video if you have some time to show me your way of doing it!

Hi Patara I had a hen that went broody, it was her first time she hatched 1 egg and was a really good momma. I kept them in the coop but in there own area, I put a igloo dog house in there , they were very happy. I opened the pen up when the chick was about 11 weeks, momma started going out again but baby stayed behind to scared to go with momma, baby is now 17 weeks and she still stays in behind the dog house, I bring her out to her own yard everyday and she is in the coop at night but doesn't roost with the rest and momma has nothing to do with her anymore. What can I do to help her get with the others,I would hate if they all ganged up on her and hurt her. Baby's name is buttercup also 🐣🐥

You could bring the Silkie inside too, and keep her with her hatchlings, let her raise them, she is small enough, I don't think it'll be more trouble than only with the chicks.

It never gets old having chicks even in the winter! I have had a lot of broody mommas this winter. When I let my broody mommas raise their babies, I bring them in the basement where it is much warmer than outside temperatures. If you give babies to a broody Silkie it takes several days for them to get out of that deep trance.

Angela conigliaro hi.. we live in Ohio and I guess our weather is a little colder Ethan yours. We have had an]bout every kind of chickens and they all have done well. I love our Easter eggers because they lay colored eggs, but we also love our Buff Orpingtons, and all the others...hope that helps.. I can try and answer questions but of course we know Patara is the best. She has helped me soooo much

Do you mind if I ask you some questions
    Mrs. P?
Do your Ester Eggers/Americanas go broody?
    Are they good mothers?
I have 3 of those hens and I would love to know if they go broody.
Also, for the past five or so years we've tried to raise Guineas, but all of them end up with straddle legs and they die. We don't put them in a slippery area, so we don't know what's going on. Do you have any suggestions?
