- "How are you getting ALL of those eggs right now!" Simple. A basic list of how we manage our hens and the items we feel work for us in order to have healthy hens and beautiful eggs even during winter time. Do your own homework. Always do what works for you and your farm, but be willing to try a few of these tips out!

To everything there is a season...and a time for every purpose under heaven. I love how you prioritise your animals and learn about them by looking after them. I'm glad that they reward you for that care which tells us that not only do you genuinely understand and care for them, but they genuinely appreciate it. Anyone who keeps any kind of animal understands that they eat first, their bedding gets cleaned first, they can't do it for themselves so it's the price we pay , and it's a small one, for the bounty they bring us. I applaud you Patara both for doing it and for telling it how it is!
Something I also use in their water is molasses as it gives good vitamins and nutrients and I put that in with the vinegar and the girls love it!
As child I had a leash trained buff orpington chicken as a pet. She had an unusually musical croon, which earned her the name of Bach Bach. She lived to be fifteen years old and was still laying the week she fell off her perch and broke her neck in the night. Cried like a baby. She had her beak broken in a tussle with a St. Bernard pup that got into the yard (she won that fight, despite her battle scars), and during her convalescence we brought her indoors to sleep by my bedside, and would feed her hot oatmeal with nuts and berries and clotted cream. Thereafter every single morning for the rest of her life, she'd get out of her coop, open our back door, trot down the staircase into my bedroom and sit on my head and peck my forehead to wake me up for her treat. She spent winters indoors, and evenings perched on the back of my chair in the living room. Pretty sure it was the extra goodies and light and warmth and security she had that kept her laying and laying and laying her whole life. None of our other hens gave us eggs so reliably. You are right. What you give your girls determines what they will give you in return.

Just discovered your blog and I love tit! Several years ago we spent two years with chickens. I was a fanatic about their cleanliness and had people comment on the time I spent caring for them. Well....I had 24 healthy girls and one healthy boy that gave me eggs with no break all winter long and the only 'light' they ever had out there was the coldest of nights...-20 when I had a heat lamp going to keep the water from freezing. One thing I discovered that you didn't mention is sprouted beans. When the snow was on the ground and they couldn't really do much scratching I would sprout whichever bean was on sale. They devoured them!! In a couple months we should be moving out to my dads old place...2 acres and lots of room to roam and grow!

Your barn looks so clean. I love it.
I have some solar lights that put out a good amount of light. One of those goes into the coop at dusk. They have some light in the coop til morning when the solar light goes back out to get recharged. They all go to roost without fail and I think they are happier not being in pitch dark all night. The other solar lights are aimed at the door to the coop ( just wired wood frame and open in summer , covered with black plastic in cold weather) Might help discourage predators. Thanks for the video Patara. I feed mostly all that you do. I sprout barley for them in winter.

great video. :) my chickens give me eggs everyday even with snow on the ground because I supplement their diet and clean constantly as well. you have to work for what you want. :)

im new to keeping chickens. I only have 3, as one died. they have a small coop, only sized for 4. I clean out the poo every morning, and completely replace the bedding every two weeks. i clean the walls and roosting bar. i clan up the poo in their little run as well. I just finished a tractor, so i am excited to get them into that once the snow melts.
I think you are awesome. I currently live in salt lake City. But grew up very rural. And if the future allows and money of course I really would like to go back to that. It's super simple. I tried chickens here in the city and didn't have the best luck but I have definitely taken some notes for the future... Happy Homesteading...

I mix the 5 scratch grains which contain sunflower seeds and other grains with the crumbled feed.. seems to be working for my flocks.. oh the sunflower seeds are good for bunnies too.. I gave a handful to my bunnies mix with their hay.. great for their hair...😊 oh I also add some seaweeds too.. not much...

I wouldn't be disappointed to grow up and become like you haha. I've got 7 hens (variety of breeds) and 3 chicks under 2 days old (heritage black australorps) , I've got a hatch date on the 18th of this month and I'm expecting 15 chicks. They are going to be true APA recognized ameraucanas, barred Plymouth rocks and some rhode island red/rhode island white hybrids.

My pullets gave me eggs in -24 degree weather with no insulation in the coop! I did however feed them corn! These girls just started laying around Thanksgiving (it's the first of Feb! ) I do use a little bit of supplemental lighting. I turn on their light around 6-7a.m, and cut it off about 9 p.m
I also have a broody Easter Egger . Lol

Add some light, some heat, a great diet for the hens and you will get eggs. I want 1 egg a day every day and can usually count on that every single day.

I use the raw ACV for my rabbits. I have angoras and they are very sensitive. At the first sign of runny eyes or a sneeze and they get a teaspoon worth in their water. Just one day of that and the rabbits heal right up. And anyone who's kept rabbits knows how quickly they can die from a cold, especially angoras.
Past 35 years I always got eggs all year round and all I fed them is what nature gives them out in the grass and when I fed them cracked corn and meal grit.
I remember my grand mother gave me the chore of grinding up the corn to make cracked corn. She too had about 80 chickens and about 10 ginnys. I've seen them fly but not very high. And then I look up and see them on top of the barn. like, how do they get up there?
LOL, we throw out corn to get them into other areas while we are cleaning. My son heads to the chicken area they all run up to him like they are puppies. I actually have better access to oats here and they get that. I do supplement lighting, it gets dark here at 4:30 and the sun comes up at 8 am. NO eggs. It's on a timer so they get like 4 hours of extra light a day from the beginning of December to the middle of January. With that bit of light, they still don't lay consistently but, there are more eggs. Usually, in November they have started dropping off and get a break then. The light is under plexiglass and secured in the upper coop to mitigate the fire hazard. It's only a 60 watt bulb. If my chickens were in the barn with other animals I'd probably do the same thing you are doing. It all depends on the situation you are in I think.
lol I have been giving my chicken friends your tips after they ask why I am getting eggs in the winter.

Hello. I love watching your videos. So informative. I am in the process of buying my first home in Kentucky near land where the historic Civil War Battle of Tebb's Bend was fought and am planning on having a small farm for my family. I already have a silkie hen, which just started laying eggs and a bantam rooster, not sure what kind he is, but I would love to ask you some questions as I am a complete beginner, but your facebook page doesn't have a place to message. In the winter I make mine rice and pasta and give it to them when it’s still warm ... and if I have extra eggs , they get scrambled eggs with oregano or whatever veggies that I have extra ...
Those are so great looking eggs. Happy chicks! Do you do less incubating during the winter to keep the flock down, or do you do it all the same year around? Also, for just a small family, does it seem pointless to dispatch all the birds in late fall/early winter and then buy a few chicks in early spring? With my health, I worry I may not be able to properly care for them in the below-freezing months, unless my son can do it.
I agree. with you. we sell eggs. but alot of our neighbors come to us. when there hens stop laying.. and they don't understand how we have eggs all winter long aka all year long.

What is your opinion on the effect of DE on desirable worms in the garden and soil when using the hen waste in compost? I love the parasite control for all of my animals, and even dust rabbit manure with it to control fly larve. BUT... how are my worms in my worm bin going to do?
Do you know what % protein does green grass have, because we have more than they can eat now. I want them to eat the grass because it's free and so I wouldn't have to mow it. How much do I still need to feed them if they have all the grass they can eat. Thank you.

Hi, Patara. Please, can you tell me what brand of feed you get for your chickens, and where do you buy them?
It's ben very hard to find "No-GMO" chicken feed. All I find is "Organic", which ends up being very pricy for me, especially because my hens are not producing enough to sell the eggs yet (I have only 10 adult layers, the others are only 4 months old).
I am a PRE newbie, looking for land to raise just a few chickens to begin, so having said that...I have a question...do you let your chickens sit on their eggs to hatch or do you incubate? I am curious, and thank you thank you for the great info, I took a lot of notes!!

We bought DE at TSC & though it said food grade, when we got it home, opened it, it isn't white, is that ok #Patara ?

+Amish Country Homestead I did about two years ago with one hen, Dixie, one of our Barred Rocks. I immediately pulled her and started upping her ACV and gave her a special tincture from Fir Meadow I keep. I also really pampered her diet. She got over her cold, no one else was or got sick and in about 60 days... she went back to the flock long after we were confident she was well. She actually was laying an egg in the far nesting box to the left of my feet IN this Vid today right before I started filming. ;-) That's how I had "Barred Rock" on the brain... I chased her out of the stall. ;-)

why dont u do soy? just curious weve been living on land for 10 years farmers have used our barn & surplus land until lately. so now we have an interest to NOT disrupt the way of work out here & have our own animals, but we are GREEN.

Why do you not feed them soy?
From what I noticed chickens are nothing but small raptors... They eat what I eat. We don't want to eat it ..don't feed it to something you're going to eat
