These pendulum videos are gold. I’ve taken four TI freestyle workshops over the last nine years and thought my form was decent, if not good. But my stroke seemed somehow to lack power. After a private lesson with a TI instructor failed to identify any specific problem in technique, I began to lose my enthusiasm because I just felt something was “off” in my stroke, perhaps syncing the two beat kick with the arms. Every so often I would get in the zone for a length or two and everything came together, but I couldn’t sustain it and I didn’t understand why that feeling happened or why it went away. It was like my body knew what to do, but my mind couldn’t comprehend the problem. Months went by and I still couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Then I saw this video and the others describing the pendulum, and suddenly I knew exactly what the problem was. Did the land exercises and then took it to the pool with a snorkel so I could concentrate on the drills. Then regular freestyle. Wow! Immediately dropped five seconds over 25 yards without even trying, and felt so much more solid and balanced in the water. Thanks so much for putting these videos up for us to see and use.
Excellent. I learned something new. I love the concept of power from the hips. I also like the checkpoint are you over rotating your shoulders. Good stuff.
Excellent tips, esp not smooshing the shoulderblades, it took me along time to figure that out, i must have gone through every different type of arm recovery going lol Best freestyle channel on YT 👍
Celeste, I want to ask in two beat kick, can I swim with right arm enters and right leg kicks ie same side , then same on the left ? Is this a wrong mode of swimming correctly ? Thank you
Your tips are valuable to me. It's right - the shoulder will turn because of the hip. And dont let shoulder rotate more than the hip. Thank you very much.
Your channel is so informative, Celeste. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I have a question, in case you can read this. When you enter/extend the arm in freestyle swimming, do you do so at shoulder width? Or outside the shoulder?
Hi Francisco, it will likely be in line with the shoulder, unless you have neck or shoulder tension. Hopefully you have good mobility to bring it back around so it’s in line. However, if you are swimming in open water and there is wave or chop, going slightly wider can offer more stability. Hope this helps and answers your question
BaGuaWalk : instead if turning the shoulders, turn the hips, but you need some leverage to turn the hips. It sounds like you are leveraging with the shoulders to create the oposition. So, use the leg swing not the shoulders. Practice dry land first. I have a few other drills on you tube for just that. Practice the dry land, let me know. Keep me posted!
I did some experiment in the pool. What I found is that for me, my body roll is dependent on the recovery technique. If I reduce my stroke rate to around 44 SPM using a slow and deliberate recovery, then I can turn my hips before shoulders. However, I don't really want to swim at 44 SPM. But if I speed up, then I have a shoulder driven body roll.
BaGuaWalk You can plan on practicing this for many hours before you can actually make the shift to using the hips instead of the shoulders. You may be slower at first as your muscles imprint the new movement. Then I suggest working on speed. These are suggestions, but the hips won't get tired, the shoulders will. Keep playing with it and be curious. See what happens :-)
Can you tell some drill which will tune my two beat. Because of two beat my rotation becomes wrong and since a year I am unable to swim proper two beat.
How do you know you are not doing the kick correct? Have you viewed yourself on video to know or something else tells you the kick isn’t right? What do you imagine it to feel like when it is right?

@@TriathlonSkills-SimpleSwims Absolutely, Celeste. Thank you so much
I can't seem to turn my hips without first turning my shoulders. Is the hip rotation initiated from the kick?
