  • My 3 strokes, 3 breathes drill.
Try this drill to begin to bridge the gap in using your hips to initiate the turn for the breath. It’s also a way to practice getting more comfortable breathing to both right and left. This drill is simple but can open up more questions. Watch for more videos as I share my tips I use when teaching breathing. DO practice this on land, too.

Thank you for the videos. I am self coaching myself with the TI videos and have run into issues with breathing ( even to the dominant side). I know everyone keeps saying avoid lifting the head, but no matter how much I focus, I tend to lift my head to breath and over rotate and the subsequent strokes fall apart. If I keep the head low, i swallow water. I am going to try this drill, but if you have specific feedback to help here, would appreciate it. (unfortunately, TH-cam doesn't allow me to upload a picture that shows exactly my body position at breath).

Great information. I have a question for you. On the inhale you mentioned taking a sip of air. Is this like a deep breath all the way down into bottom of the lungs or sip like someone would take when drinking hot chocolate?

Hi Gary, It is more like a sip of hot chocolate. That's a great way to think about it. The exhale will be gentle, if you feel pressure building, let a little out, then hold the breath, let a little out.

I always keep swallowing water whenever I inhale.

Hi Mac, you’re not alone. Be sure to turn your head to the side to take a small “sip” of our through the corner of your mouth. I sometimes get water in my low side cheek, then spit it back out once I rotate my head back down. I have another breathing video coming out soon. I talk more about the sip and some steps to help get you there.

@@TriathlonSkills-SimpleSwims That's probably because I always try to keep my half goggle above the water to keep my body position horizontal during breathing. As a result, I always take a small sip of water whenever I inhale. I'm looking forward to your next video. Thanks, Celeste!
