If only these tutorials would have been around 20 years ago it would have saved our triathlon club from years of swim misery after we attended a weekend clinic of a popular swim theory. Fortunately a Masters coach took us in and helped us unlearn all that garbage, but these videos would have cut that learning time down exponentially. Dave you are STILL The Man.
Here in 2024, 10 years of not being in the water and was approached to join the Master's swim competition, I had 1 month to prepare, and this video saved me from my freestyle hip over-rotation and snake-like behaviour!
Thank you so much!! I could never get a straight answer about how much hip rotation compared to shoulder rotation. My hips at 45° means legs splayed and balance problems. You also lose the tension in the core that the shoulder hip differential rotation produces. The coiled spring effect so to speak. Thanks so much, it's been a mystery for me for years.
Johnny, you got it. Remember, over rotation combined with a thoracic spine and hip flexors will cause your feet to splay while breathing. Think about exposing your arm pit for a quick second and this is a good reminder on not over exaggerating the shoulder roll. Also turn your toes inward during the kick this will prevent eversion and dorsi flexion of your ankle. Dave
OMG! Such a pleasure to have your comment!! Mr. Dave!! It was little bit difficult to transfer from your wonderful tips because my pool English understanding until adjust to my swim technique. However, I will do my best and thanks you so much your training video!! I love it!!
You can't generate force if there is nothing to push against, so your hips need to resist against the pull from the shoulders and arm. If they both rotate the same you get a floppy effect.
The into music on this channel always makes me expect some 90s light beer commercial. Tanned dude with a mullet - Golds Gym singlet - Pamela blondes splashing water fun 😅 NB: Great channel with interesting content.
@@DaveScott it's a good imagine to us to get someone to swim correctly ---we use images like this in golf all the time....thanks for the tip - will try it today
Vijay, Lets not confuse a strong core with stabilizing your spine, hips and maximizing the torque in your pull pattern. When athletes over roll their hips it’s very difficult to grab a firm handle on the entry. The elbow has a tendency to drop. One way to think of hip rotation is the degree of rotation is about 50 - 60% less than your shoulders. So, if the shoulder rotation is 45 degrees, cut this in half with your hips. Additionally, if the hips are rotated too far and the athlete is tight in the shoulder girdle and thoracic spine, the elbow will drop and the body will increase wagging with your feet. I hope this helps. Dave Scott

Whats the popular swim theory? Swimsmooth or effortless swimming or something?
@@PhiyackYuh 20 years ago...that would have been TI....
Great video Dave. Completely agree
Thanks for the support!

Great video! Swimming rocks 🏊👍
Thank you for your valuable knowledge..
Thxs do much! Was wondering about this the last few days!
Thank You! Very clear explanation!
thanks mister Dave Scott, I think strong core is basic for to swim better
Honestly, it's like this video was made with my main problem in mind: over rotation of hips and consequently legs splaying. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for great tip!!! rotate shoulder and keep the hip as much as I can!!

We may use this for some of our upcoming 2023 spots - thanks for the great ideas!
Thanks a lot for this video.... looking forward for more
I love these so much! Keep em comin!
Thanks, Jill... We have lots more great content coming every week! BTW, let me know if you have any questions about the skills progression.
my cue for keeping the hips calm is to brace my core, is this a good cue?
How can I learn breathing in free style
Focus on that rotation and making sure you are exhaling before breaking the surface of the water!
Thank you I will give it great effort
This goes against textbook swimming. We was taught to rotate the whole body around the longitudinal axis.....#duh back to the drawing board...lol
I wanna see someone swimming with a hot cup of coffee on the tail-bone.
No you don't... it's messy.

how does this square with the idea of ' hip driven freestyle'?
