Valheim: 5 Ways to Kill Moder - Melee, Bow & Arrows, Tamed Wolves, Bonfires and Setting a trap

- Moder is the 4th boss that you'll face in the Mountains. This video shows you 5 different methods on how to kill her.
These 5 methods include giving her a fair fight and using Melee and Archery. If you don't want to melee or worry about blocking, you can also shoot her from below in a small trench. Since you're in the mountains, you can also kill her with your new wolf pets. You can also trick her into standing on top of a few bonfires, and you can trap her and box her in so she can't fly. That last method might need a little work though!
Using a frost resist potion is unnecessary for this fight. As long as you've crafted a wolf fur cape, her ice damage will already be reduced as much as it could be.

This fight was hilariously easy. Easier than the first time I fought Eikthyr. Here I did all this prep work, cleared out trees, made a couple pillars to hide behind, got my meads, good weapons and armor, bunch of arrows, serpent stew and meat, all geared up to fight. What does Moder do? She lands on the alter, and gets herself stuck. I got right into her shoulder, and all she did was slowly start turning. No frost breath, no slash attack, no bites, just s l o w l y turning in a circle. I was able to stay right in that shoulder area with ease, and just hacked away with my sword. Even switched to a dagger mid “fight” just to use less stamina. A few rotations later, bye bye Moder.
Easiest. Boss. Ever... 🤣
Edit: of course, I’ll be doing it a few more times, just for trophies and tears. Tears of sadness...
Had a moment like this where I spent quite a bit prepping for the Bonemass fight. Then he spawned in a tree I had to build up to.
AI is quite broken, the last challenging boss was Eikthyr, and only because I was inexperienced
he's not easier than eikhyr, you had to do all that stupid prep work to fight him and he has like 5 times more HP than Eikthyr, with Eikthyr you can just kill him with no armor, just after spawning with a club
Not easier than Eikthyr, but still easier than it should have been. Moder kept getting stuck and glitching out on terrain when it landed - allowing me to get many melee hits in before even considering blocking or dodging. I really hope the devs fix this encounter - it's mostly broken.

Thank you! I never thought to raise the ground to hide from the flying breath attacks; I used to try walls, but she smashes them instead. That made the fight a whole lot easier. Without having to worry about that big attack, the rest was easy.
Ground walls can protect your base from troll raids too.

I enjoyed watching the different options, it actually inspires me to try Moder more than once, not something I can easily say for Bonemass hehe.

I accidently spawned 2 bone masses the first I fought him😭
Poison resistance mead, iron mace and iron tower shield make bonemass so easy, just walk loops around the skull when you run out of stamina

Serpent Shield > silver shield: its cheaper to make if there aren't many silver nodes in your mountain. Less degraded movement than the iron tower shield, additional resistance to pierce, and higher block armor than silver shield. I got mine when I was in the swamps and kept it all the way until I replaced it with the black metal shield in plains. For weapons, iron mace was fine with Draugr Fang and fire/poison arrows.

@@Daemon1995_sure it is. I do it all the time solo, nearly have 2 stacks of scales now. I do recommend the longship, it’s not as maneuverable as the karve but has a lot more health. Make sure to mark serpent spawn locations on the map, they will respawn there. Scout the coastline near spawn areas, look for any rivers, small ponds or even a swamp, then mark them on the map. You’ll use these rivers/ponds/swamp to trick the serpent into thinking it’s back in the ocean once you drag it on land, as it heads for the nearest body of water once released or if the line breaks. For convenience, set up a portal near the coast of an area you know has serpents. Either leave the ship there, or bring the materials through the portal to build one. Bring 10 wood to throw up a workbench for repairing the ship. For armor, whatever the strongest armor you got. Iron or wolf armor is perfect. For food, all 3 slots high stamina. I use eyescream, turnip stew and onion soup, but whatever your highest stamina foods are, use them. For weapons, serpents are weak to frost damage, so using frostner or frost arrows works best, but a good sword or dagger works just fine. You’ll also need the harpoon, obviously. Bring some stamina mead as well, medium stamina mead is best, but whatever you have.
Wait till just before nightfall, then head out sailing. Some say zig zag, but I find sailing straight through works just fine. When one spawns, get it’s attention, then start sailing to one of those lure spots. If you’re not close to a lure spot, the nearest shore will do. Wait to harpoon it until you’re about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way to shore, you save stamina this way and the serpent will follow most of the way on its own. You don’t have to go full speed as you’re more likely to lose the serpent, plus the longship can take a beating, so a few bites from the serpent is fine. When you’re at the 1/2-3/4 mark, harpoon it. Sit back down at the rudder and aim for shore. When close, stand up and get ready to hop out. Let the ship beach itself if you want. Once you’re on shore, start dragging the serpent out, keeping an eye on your stamina. If it starts getting low, pop that stamina mead. If you can get it to one of those rivers/ponds/swamp then perfect, let it loose and it’ll get itself stuck in the river. If not near a lure spot, try to get some trees or rocks between the serpent and the water, this’ll slow down the path finding and give you time to attack. Don’t worry about any nearby monsters, unless it’s a troll or abomination, focus all your effort on the serpent. A few good hits later and you’ll be picking up your hard earned serpent loot.
It’s super slow hunting, you’re unlikely to get more than 1 serpent a night and it’s multiple in game days before they respawn. Sounds complicated, but it’s pretty easy. Look up solo serpent hunting on TH-cam for visual aid if you want, and practice makes perfect. There’s been a few times where I’ve lost one due to an unfortunate troll or abomination spawn, but it’s rare.

I'm not actually having a hard time with moder, but the constant appearing of wolves like every 15 to 20 seconds they keep respawning on random places.

Yesterday I decided to take on her. There was a well structure nearby (like with stairs and a chest on the bottom) where I placed my "get-da-fuck-out" portal to my main base.
The fight didn't go according to plan and I had to run to this well for shelter. Somehow she reached me there and I jumped into the portal. All good right? But here is a catch: I had an active mod that teleports your enemies together with you. So this is how I brought her from the mountain RIGHT IN THE HEART OF MY MOST IMPORTANT BASE. All the loot, workshops, portals to other bases were there! I shouldn't bother describing how I felt when I saw her flying over there. I panicked but then decided to quickly lure her out of the base into the wild. I barely managed to do so because the night came, it became dark, greydwarfs started chasing me together with Moder, I was falling into trenches and almost drowned in one of the canals. Man, that was some wild shit.
Luckily I still had enough of healing potions and arrows, which allowed me to finally kill her.
Moral of this story: be aware of mods, bois!

Could you combine the barbecue pit *and* the trap? I'm not sure how far down you can dig, but if you could make a barbecue roaster *under* the trap floor, that'd be fun.
Good point, if you dig down another four metres, set a fire and a floor she would roast whilst trapped on the 'second floor'... I may try this just out of curiosity

do you know what you levels were at the time when fighting moder with melee and bow? because my shield skill is only level 17 and i just wanna be sure that ill be able to block the bosses attacks

You can use a iron sledge to find silver fairly easy
I used Stagbreaker.
I had a maxed out silver shield with 40ish armor and I could not block Moders attacks, even with Serpent stew, sausages and eyescream
You also need to max out your armor (the armor is even more important than the shield) AND you have to have good blocking skills.
I did this fight recently with the Crystal Battleaxe. My block was high enough that I was still able to parry all of Moder's melee attacks and the breath weapon that Moder uses when she's on the ground. My buddy also used flesh rippers. So idk what this guy is talking about when he says not to use these weapons.
I hear ya, but keep in mind he was doing this SOLO, it's a heck of a lot easier to take on a Boss with help. His point was the silver sword is better and he's correct.
@mmouse648 you know, I have a solo world too and also did the Moder fight with a Crystal battleaxe I beat that boss without even dying.

They really need to make it more difficult. Faster attacks, harder hits. Moder is definitely a downgrade from the Elder as well as Bonemass.
Eikthyr was amazing as a new player

One method I used was digging a semi long trench from the base of her stone , building roofs adding 2 smaller pillars and a workbench.
The fight was depressing

No it’s def Modder sounded out like Mo-Der. It’s a semi common boss name cuz Arkham survival evolved has a boss name modder to and so does another 1 I can’t think of off hand
