I found the same rod in the back of a truck stop in 1973 when I was 15...still have it,spent my entire life tricking it out...thanks for this...mine is sooo similar... Jeff Toronto,Cda.
What a great car! This car is probably closer to what kids originally did with the Mercury than the shiny don't touch-mobiles on show circuits. Love that it has the original flat-head and wish we coulda heard it.
Rumors, stories, and hints exist as to its exact whereabouts of the original Merc. Some say its rusting in the back lot of a repair shop on the New York, New Jersey border. While recently Bo Hopkins heard its in the process of being restored on the west coast in a Los Angeles body shop. One things for sure, uncertainty and lack of knowledge add to the mystery and legend of this classic film car.
Re: Brian Setzer owns Mercury. This is such old news. Saying Brian Setzer owns the car is like saying Jimmy Carter is still president. The fact is, Brian Setzer owned the Mercury very briefly after it was on display at Universal Studios. He sold it almost as quickly as he'd bought it. There are so many rumors (see my comment above). We are so lucky to have someone like Glen who has provided us with something as close to the original movie car as anything we will ever see. Enjoy!!
When I spoke with your dad at the event he spoke of you fondly. Yes, this is an awesome reproduction of the car that was customized to look good on camera only. Your dad showed me some funny pix of he and his friends customizing this car. They had beer IVs in their arms. Nice to hear from you. -Mark
It sounds a awful lot like the Blues Brothers old time rhythm and blues review performing in the background we saw them at Universal Studios Orlando and they were awesome. This Pharaoh's Mercury replica is awesome also kudos on a job well done.
Nice work, love the fact that you relicated the exposed weld and the one piece uncut rear glass. Did you know the original '51 (which as most people know was owned by Brian Setzer from the Stray Cats and got re-lettered and pinstriped by Ed Roth in the 1980s) was bought bone stock from the parking lot of a stock car track?
I have an old Street Rodder magazine from 1977 with the Graffiti Merc in it. I remember reading another article about how the Merc was 'slapped' together for the movie in a rush, and how the chop job was really butchered compare to other chop jobs.
@Eliaures Yeah, most guys would want to put a GD 350 Chevy in it. DYK that the '49-'51 Merc body shell was supposed to be the '49 FORD, but Henry Ford II and the brass at Ford felt it was "too fat" to be a Ford, so it got bumped up to a Mercury. The original '49 Merc became the '49-'51 Lincoln. The new '49-'51 Ford that they designed set the stage for just about all 1950s "slab-side" styling. Ford did it again. Screw Harley Earl and his bulbous, bloated GM designs.
