Yeah,I completely agree,checking the float height is vital,my bike has a 20000 rpm so I think float height is vital,it is a 1987 Suzuki GSXR 4 cylinder,thanks.
Fantastic instructions very clear to someone like me who can struggle to understand things sometimes as people go too quick. This a patient good clear instructions 👌👌👌
Thanks for this video - it has been a nightmare to find some knowledge how to adjust the floats of my 1974 Yamaha RD 125 finished resto. It's almost impossible to find any motorcycle service in Helsinki, who can do/ or even know something of adjusting old 2-strokers carburetors.
How does float height affect the mixture? I thought the jets and adjustment screws control that. I had always assumed the float height is just about keeping the chamber filled so the jets are submerged during rocking of the bike.
I would be happy to receive your help on a problem I have with the carburetor as soon as I start the motorcycle I have a leak from the excess pipe I did a test and all the signs indicated a problem with the float or the valve after countless attempts that failed to solve the problem I decided to replace the carburetor and after the replacement the carburetor was on another motorcycle And it was normal. But my motorcycle again had leaks from the excess pipe, do you have an idea or a solution to the problem
@@krookedENT No, it didn't help. I now assume the float level is off. Which way do I bend the metal tab to reduce/stop gas from flowing out the overflow?
Hey friend, I have a VM 22 clone carburetor on my sons mini bike. The brass tube on the inside of the bowl that makes it drip if it’s too high, that brass tube is level with the gasket. I set my float so it is 25 mm below the little brass tube, so when I check The gas level with the tube it sits 25 mm below the seem or the gasket , I hope that is correct. It calls for 25 mm. Please let me know thank you
I adjusted my float bowl and now the manual choke won't work on cold start I have to give it gas to fire up also the plunger has no spring/ nakuru carb 50cc fuel only carb/ idle and fuel air mix screws
Love your vids brother. I took the carbs off of this v twin. I made sure diaphragms, jets, gaskets, needles, and all were good. Put them back on and still dies upon throttle. After checking everything numerous times, and replaced all lines, it still dies upon throttle but only revs up if I spray the carbs. Could a float out of adjustment cause bike to die upon throttle but still idle? Only revs if I spray the carbs. Any help appreciated. Thanks for the vids.
My guess is it could. If the float is set too low it's not getting enough gas in the bowl to handle throttle but could handle idle. My problem on my KLR I'm thinking is the it's set too high and it floods the carb which makes gas go out the overflow.
Do you have a pwk 38 carb? I’ve been having the same trouble got a full rebuild kit on eBay but I didn’t get a new float just needle valve. What are you having trouble with?
Please my motorcycle atv sound like the airflow is blocked but as I move for sometime then the speed come back to normal and speed well but If I lowered the acceleration and raised the speed again the same problem come back again please help me
My bike idles low and then stops when I rest it on the kick stand. It sputters a little in the hills an won't idle on steep inclines. But it runs like a train on flat ground. New carburetor. Could it be the float height?
It could, but it is more likely that your needle and seat are damaged and leaking and instead of going through the overflow the gas might be going into the cylinders and draining through the rings into the crankcase.
You dont have to have all that to set float height. Length of see through Tygon tubing placed on drain nipple on float bowl. Never fails, spot on. Finally a video that's shows the correct way.
All you need is a length of Tygon tubing you can see through. Place it on bowl drain nipple, hold hose up beside fuel bowl, open drain screw, the fuel level in the hose will be the same as level in bowl. Make sure there are no air bubbles in the hose. You can move the hose up and down, does not matter, level remains the same. Simple physics. I like my fuel level just at or under where the bowl meets the carb housing. You dont need any fancy tools or gauges. You do have to have a fuel bottle that you can hang up above the carb. I clamp my carbs in a table vise. This way you can leave carb sitting with fuel loaded against the float needle all day to check for leaks and test the float needle to see that its holding and not seeping fuel, flooding. I do carbs almost daily for years, this is the best way and easiest to bench test float level. The more fuel you have in your test bottle the better.
It can, but it's more likely to have something else going wrong. Make sure the you have good compression and spark and the right spark plug. As long as those are good, verify the float height is correct, then work on your jetting. (make sure the air filter is clean and in good condition.) -Charles
Ooh, I forgot , the kits usually came with a cardboard gauge to measure the float height also ..not no more though ..its made by corperate, and they could care less about customers , they already got your money ..

I really enjoyed this thorough explanation . Also helpful that you showed 3 different ways to measure and adjust float height

X2
It’s more so if it creates a lean condition. If the bowl isn’t filling, it runs lean.
Less fuel in the bowl = less fuel agitation = less excess fuel up to the venturi.
gravity, column height, bar.
Well done.. Thank you... but I'm a little thrown about the float height affecting the mixture... how so ?
Nice video. Settles the confusion
My only question is with the tube test how would you go about adjusting it? If the fuel is way under the line would you set floats higher?

I hope this helps prevent gas from leaking out the overflow tube. I've cleaned and replaced parts that hadn't helped.

Very educational big thanks for sharing this imformation great video btw 👍
I got an 84 cb650sc and the floats and where they attach to the needle valve is completely plastic. How would I adjust those?
There’s a small metal tab that rests against the needle. To adjust the level, simply bend the tab and then check the float level.

Do anyone have service manuals for Keihin PWK38? I can't find it anywhere, and my bike service manual contains only engine repairs.
What causes the gas to spill out the over flow constantly? Too high or too low float?
If the float level is set too high, that could cause fuel to come out of the overflow.
@@rmatvmc thanks
Great video except I dint see the float height on the chart. Riding at 5-10k feet. I just set mine at 8mm. Thanks

ANYBODY know what the correct height for a 2004 Polaris predator 500 cause I swear its impossible to find online
The float height for your model should be 13-14mm (0.51-0.55")
If it’s set way off will it prevent the motor from running, or cause it too crank and then go dead after a second or two?
Perfect. What I was looking for at 5:00. Thanks!
Very informative. Thank you

Have you looked at your jets inside the carb? Sometimes those can get partially clogged and exhibit some of the symptoms you're experiencing.
I wanted to watch a video on how to put it back together cuz I just took it apart and cleaned everything so thanks for your video
If the float height is off will that make it spill gas Into the breather box
I think so. That happened to me

yep. set float to shut off sooner
Could this cause gas to leak into your oil I’m having that problem and can’t figure it out for the life of me
It could, but it is more likely that your needle and seat are damaged and leaking and instead of going through the overflow the gas might be going into the cylinders and draining through the rings into the crankcase.

You saved the day!
What if i have a plastic tang on my float instead of a metal on?
If your float is completely plastic it cannot be adjusted and a new float would be needed.

What's the name of that tool you used at 7mm to verify float height?
That's the K&L Digital Caliper. You can click the first link in the description to check it out and the other tools used in this video.
Its just a vernier caliper, but a digital one. U can get them at any parts or hardware store like a home depot, napa etc. 15bucks
