    6:09 Very true. A bad air to fuel ratio from the pilot adjustment screw will cause issues at any throttle. My idle was fine, my mid range was fine, but my engine would bog at full throttle. I leaned out my my pilot screw and fixed the problem.

    well done Steve, I've seen many many videos to understand how it works in a carburetor, the logic and the use of each part. Some were good some were less, but none were as complete and clear as your video. Your team prepared it well, and you explained it as well. My mechanic takes care of my ATV and I only hunt, but I had to understand the hows and whys, and this video DID IT . thanks.

    Couple things I've run into recently trying to fix the unfixable 2007 YZ450f lean bog/popping/hard starting..... - 1, make sure valve clearance is within spec. -2, someone had replaced the accelerator pump linkage with some shiny piece, long story short it was not the oem black plastic piece you do the "oring mod" to, so it was too short, accelerator pump did not work. Ordered a new kit, put it on, works fine ever since.
    Also, wont run without choke, check pilot jet/passage.

      You need to check the fuel valve on your fuel tank to see if its clogged. some valves you can rebuild some you cant. but if you pull the fuel supply line off the carburetor and the fuel valve turned on and no fuel flows then that is the issue.

    Hello Steve, amazing video and great detail. I have 1 question for you though. Have you heard about rejetting pilot jets to be richer for bikes that operate 7000' and above before? Apparently the idea is that natural loss of vacuum on an engine due to high elevations can cause harder starting conditions. A richer pilot jet to help compensate for the lack of vacuum to help aid in a richer condition and adjusting the main jet accordingly to elevation.

    • @stvnmoto
      @stvnmoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct and incorrect. Yes you loose air volume as you get higher in elevation which will both cause a richer condition, but the lose of air volume will effect it. The very reason that the pilot screw/fuel screw/air mixture screw or whatever you want to call it is there for adjustment along with the idle screw. Barometric pressure, and humidity also effect it causing a lean or rich condition. If you were to look at it on a chart, the lower elevation you the changes in jet size are less dramatic in running conditions than it would be at higher elevation because of less air. You can over rich or lean one circuit and try to compensate for the lack of correct adjustment of another circuit to a certain degree. But its not accurate and your engine will never run the best it can without adjusting everything properly.

    • @garonburwell9008
      @garonburwell9008 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you got it backwards. higher elevation is less air. so less fuel at higher elevation. see?
      for what it's worth i've seen the tendency for some folks to think that at higher altitude you need to add fuel and i can't understand why some people think this.

    Liked your video. I have a KTM 450 EXC, with a Keihin FCR-MX carb and the bike won't start with the E-start until it's warmed up a bit and then I usually need to give It just the tiniest bit of throttle. When cold, it starts easily with the kick start, but again, it needs a tiny bit of throttle. Once warm, the bike seems to run correctly and be responsive. I've also had the carb apart a couple of times and can't find anything that looks wrong (everything looks clean, including the pilot jet). I got the Tusk fuel screw and did some adjusting of the fuel mix and idle but it didn't fix my starting issue.
    It would be great if I could get a couple ideas on what to try next.

      stvnmoto, your suggestion was exactly correct. I happened to adjust the valves a couple of weeks ago just hoping it would help and I noticed that one of the intake valves had no clearance. After putting everything back together it started easily with the e-start and no throttle. My subsequent rides were great. Thanks!

    • @Bournefort
      @Bournefort ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are running too rich and have already maxed out your adjustment screw, you need to get a smaller pilot jet to reduce fuel flow even more. Vise versa. If you have already backed your adjustemt screw all the way off, and are still running lean, then you need to get a bigger pilot jet to let more fuel in.

    • @Bournefort
      @Bournefort ปีที่แล้ว

      I just rebuilt the carburetor on my atv and it was running super rich. Black spark plug, wouldn't run well after it warmed up, and would bog at full throttle. I had to fully close my pilot adjustment screw. Luckily mine works when fully screwed in so I don't have to replace the pilot jet.

    • @stvnmoto
      @stvnmoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the Hot Start lever adjustment. But for the most part your bike needs to be tuned to you elevation and riding conditions by a good mechanic. The other issue that might be going on is your intake valve clearance adjustment is tight causing the intake valves to not seal correctly causing compression to push back into the carburetor that will not allow the fuel and air to be sucking into the combustion chamber for internal combustion to happen.

    Thank you

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Could be. Sounds like the main jet might be too big. You can verify by trying to rev with the choke on, stays the same or worse=smaller main, better=bigger main. Then with choke off and air box lid off, rev it again, better=smaller main, worse=bigger main. This is assuming you've checked all the basics (fresh fuel, clean air filter etc.). For reference, our QA Parts carbs that fit your ATV come with a 120 main and a 45 pilot. If you can't get the carb you have ironed out, I'd try the QA Parts carb and be done with it. -Charles

    Hi Steve. I'm your new subscriber from KSA. I got small bike the Honda TMX 155. My plug reading was fine so far having a light tan color which means i got a desired mixture. My issue is that, i can't start my bike with a single kick after overnight parking. It takes 3 - 5 kicks to start w/o choke. And sometimes, takes more kicks if I choked it. Around 8 - 10 kicks if parked over a week. Some owner's and mechanics of this bike said that it is normal for several kicks but i'm not convinced. The average morning temperature in my place was 30 "C. Can you give me some hints to check as I want a single kick every cold start?

    • @stvnmoto
      @stvnmoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeaven. It can be normal to kick it a bunch of times, especially if its cold. If it were mine I would adjust the low speed fuel screw and turn it out 1/4-1/2 turn to richen up that circuit. There might be a tamper proof plug installed in the way of the screw that may need to be drilled out so you can adjust it, but that's the solution to your issue.

    • @stvnmoto
      @stvnmoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure you can call that uncorked. If you are wanting more air flow you can do that and yes you most likely need to go a bigger size in pilot jet. First I would adjust for elevation in your jetting, that might make all the difference in running conditions that you are originally seeking for.

    Was wondering if you can help me with my carburetor problem. Have a 98 yamaha big bear 350 4x4. Someone totally demolished the carb. All jets, pilot screws were cross threaded and ruined the carb. I got a new one, cleaned it from top to bottom and the only way it will idle is with the mixture screw all the way out to where it's almost falling out. I can get it to Rev up only if I slowly feather the throttle. If I punch it, it immediately boggs and dies. Sometimes it's fine on half choke. I've put smaller and larger main jets and the only thing that changes is full and half choke work properly. Still have to have the mixture screw all the way out and it boggs on quick throttle. I'm at wits end trying to figure this out. Ove cleaned this carb probably 10-15 times. Can anyone help? Thank you

      as far as I know, it is used when you start the bike. at that point you need only fuel to get through and so you "close" the air stream. after the engine has started, you let again the air mixed with the fuel. I hope I'm getting that right...:)

    As I was looking at the schematic for the 2001 Honda 400EX carburetor I see a jet that nobody speaks about. Everybody talks about the choke the float bowl the pilot Jets the main Jets the needle and then settings but nobody speaks of number 38 in the schematic for the 400EX I'm pretty sure it's the same carb as the 300EX maybe the 450 number 38 in the schematic JET, SLOW AIR (#110) what's that about?

    Which way do I bend the float needle to shut of more fuel. I have a Honda rancher that I think is getting too much in the bowl. Exhaust smells like fuel and crankcase getting fuel

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll want to bend the tang up towards the needle, which will in turn allow your float level to be set lower. Unfortunately, we don't have a video on setting float level but there are some great videos on TH-cam showing the process.

    How to fix back firing through my 1990 Harley Davidson carb do I increase or decrease my timing

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Backfiring can have a few causes but if you've isolated it to timing you can try advancing it and see if that helps. Also check your fuel pump and filter are both working correctly.

    • @stvnmoto
      @stvnmoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its not timing, its carbonation being incorrect. or you have a exhaust gasket leak.

    What should the idle speed be on a hot Honda 125 engine?

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will depend on your exact engine but the idle speed will generally be around 1,100 to 1,500 RPM.

      @randallbeasley7322 3 ปีที่แล้ว
