    It turns out that the story about TD buying their MOOG IIIP* from The Stones is a total myth (although it was used by Doug McKechnie at the Altamont festival in 1969 - you can see it in the documentary GIMME SHELTER). He had borrowed it from his friend Bruce Hatch - who bought it in 1967 and then customised it. In 1972 Bruce needed money, so the IIIP was returned to him and he eventually sold to Hansa studio in Germany and it was here that TD (Chris Franke) first saw it. The original Moog IIIP was the 4th model produced (Perhaps 1004?). Chris replaced many of original customised modules as newer and more stable modules were produced and supplied by Bob Moog. The promo photo is an infamous fake - it's actually a photomontage using different elements: Chris and Edgar and the equipment comes from Feb 1975, but the photo of Peter comes from 1974 - he has been glued over Michael Hoenig. The Moog shot (with a slightly different angle) is doubled at the foot of photo is doubled. *I'm just completing a list of Tangerine Dream's stage and studio equipment (1968-2023) - it currently has 550 pages, c/w module by module breakdowns

      So the provenance of the IIIP is correct from Hansa studios to TD. The Stones never owned it.
      Bruce Hatch did. It appeared in Gimme Shelter, so it was attributed to the Stones?
      Interesting. Also, I'd be very interested in a copy of your work on the TD gear (even at this stage). Please let me know how we can make that happen. thx - O.Z.

      @@ozhalljr yep 100% the same IIIP as the customized interval switches and inputs and outputs are totally unique (the 914 module always jumps out as looking weird for example). I think wires were crossed and TD were just told it came from The Stones (nothing like the one Jagger used). Doug McKechnie corrected the story, but it was only when I got high res photos of TD's Moog from 1974 that I could confirm that every customization was identical. My PDF will be available next year - should have about 520 photos and be around 119,000 words

    Really informative and inspirational. Just recently started experimenting with modular myself after a lifetime of midi. It’s a different world and a different mind set. I experienced some ‘inner resistance’ at first lol! But I’m glad I stuck with it. I found your video inspirational. Thank you for explaining each component’s role. 👍

      I find myself just at the halfway point. I love the sonic possibilities of modular, but I haven’t (yet?) found a good way to use sequencers like the 960 in a musical way that vibes with me.

    • @ozhalljr
      @ozhalljr  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martinforstner3075 The Berlin School sound is pretty specific. I really like the energy of the sound. If that's not what you're into, perhaps you don't need the gear. I've been working with a Hydrasynth lately which has a great arpeggiator section (the best I've encountered). It allows a great deal of flexibility in the chord changes, but requires a bit of timing accuracy technique.
      Check out some of my live performances with my duo MUAD for some ideas on applying sequencers:

    Excellent video, as always. Thanks for explaining in greater detail the s-trig vs v-trig difference. Also I was wanting to learn more about the sequential switch module.
    Now I need to find someone who has actually tuned the oscillators via the screws on the back of the 921 B's - since I cant seem to get mine tuned to work on all the octaves and/or settings with my korg nts-2 oscilloscope.

    • @ozhalljr
      @ozhalljr  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Josh, I had to recalibrate one or two 921Bs after doing some normalized wiring on the PCBs of an oscillator bank (921A & three 921Bs). There's a very specific process that's outlined in the service manual for the '70s Moog systems. Here's a link to archive.org for this manual:
      archive.org/details/Moog_Modular_System_Service_Manual_1
      Take a look at that and get back with me if this does not do the trick.

    Great video!
    I recently acquired a System 35 with the double Sequencer. I am getting to know the synthesizer part but was intimidated by the sequencer. The concepts you explain should apply to the System 35 sequencer right?

    • @ozhalljr
      @ozhalljr  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats on the System 35. Yes, these principles apply to the System 35. The sequencing modules ( 960, 961, 962 ) are the same in Sys 15, 35, 55.

    Very interesting. For transposition, how do you add CV ? Do you need a dedicated module like the precision adder from Doepfer ? Tx....

    • @ozhalljr

      Yes you must sum the two CVs. The CP3A-O OSCILLATOR CONTROLLERis perfect for this.

    Thank you for your series on the system 55. I appreciate it. I own one now, and I would like to know how you would go about creating a 32 step sequence using two sequencers, and two sequential switches. I suspect this would be possible. Thank you.

    • @ozhalljr
      @ozhalljr  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @PspirallifeTutorials The easiest way to do this would be to add a Doepfer A-151 Quad Sequential switch to your System 55. Take any 4 CV outputs from the 6 CV outputs that you have in the two sequencers. Route the 4 CVs into the sequential switch and trigger it with the Step One gate output from the first sequencer. Use the Sequencer 1 clock out to clock the second sequencer.
      i have some other 960 sequencer videos in my System 55 playlist that may be helpful:

    • @ozhalljr
      @ozhalljr  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The A-151 is just 4hp. If you have the space to devote to it, the Behringer 1040 Mix/Sequencer can be used as a sequential switch (and much more). The 1050 price is about the same ($79 USD) as the A-151, but it is 24 hp. The 1050 Mix Sequencer and the 1047 Multimode Filters were the "jewels" of the ARP 2500, IMHO.

    • @PspiralifeTutorials
      @PspiralifeTutorials 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ozhalljr Ok thanks for the tip. I was trying to envision a way to use a 2nd one of the Behringer 3 channel seq switch, by sending the fourth channel of cv from the second sequencer, into the 2nd seq switch, and then linking the 1st seq switch to the 2nd seq switch, in a way that creates a potential 6 steps of sequential sequencing.
      Steps 1,2 & 3 on the 1st SS, with a trigger from the 1st SS starting the 1st step on the 2nd SS.
      I.e sending the 3rd trigger output into the trigger input of the 2nd SS.
      Creating a loop between the two. Is that possible, or am I over looking something?
      It could also be just a harder, more convoluted way of achieving what I want. But still id like to know. I like the problem solving aspect of modular synthesis haha.
      Having said that, I will take a close look at he dopefer A-151, and the 1050 Mix/Sequencer.
      Thanks for your help.

      @@PspiralifeTutorials I also love the puzzle/debugging aspect of patching a modular. I'll continue to mull this problem over. I have the same instinct that we're just around the corner from some way to use two of the sequential switches to switch 4 or 5 ( or 6?) signals.

    • @ozhalljr

      NO! You need a 962 Sequential Switch to switch from the row 1 output to the row 2 output then the row 3 output. currently $29

      @@ozhalljr But then the 2nd row and third row are tied up just for pitch of 24 steps?? That sounds boring. Wouldn't the second 960 allow me 16 steps pitched, PLUS, I can use each of the two "extra" rows for modulation?

    • @ozhalljr
      @ozhalljr  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I hate that you were disapointed. The video was more about the technical aspects of the Sequencer Complement B than the sound of the voice. The sequencers don't really have any sound in and of themselves. That's why I spent no time at all discussing the details of the voice patches. If it's any consolation, the lead voice in the music bed in the first 5 minutes or so was a 1976 original MInimoog.
      BTW, love the Synthetic Leaves track on your Channel page!
