With next-gen consoles come new hardware standards. For the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, one of the new features is HDMI 2.1 support. But what exactly makes HDMI 2.1 different, and is it worth buying a new TV for?
In this video, Jean-Luc Seipke breaks down everything you need to know about HDMI 2.1, such as the improvements to color and HDR it offers. Most significant to gaming will be the ability to output 4K at 120fps, and we touch on some of the titles that have been confirmed to support it for next-gen.
If you’re interested in buying a TV with HDMI 2.1, check out our roundup of the best 4K TVs for PS5 and Xbox Series X. And if you’re just as excited for new consoles as we are, then check out our weekly show Generation Next, where every Friday our PS5 and Xbox Series X/S experts breakdown the latest news and everything you need to know about the new consoles.

If you’ve got a relatively new tv there’s not necessarily a reason need to upgrade. HDMI 2.0 already supports 120fps up to 1440p if your tv is 120hertz. In reality games are unlikely to run that high a framerate at a resolution higher than that anyway unless the graphics are fairly basic in which case you’re unlikely to get much of a benefit from full 4K anyway.

As a pc gamer this is true i constantly feel frustrated by how most games wont go past 60 fps not to mention that 2k gaming over 60 fps puts a strain in the video card 120 fps is not really suggested since it could over heat atleast this is the case in rtx 2060 high settings

Exactly ... Honestly there won't be a lot of games that will run in 4k 120hz on next gen games , especially how demanding a game engine can be ... Even top end pc cards have an issue handling this , so imagine what would it be like for consoles , but hey I'm excited about the games for next gen consoles, still going to be an awesome experience

I have a question. 2.1 Cable is to handle 4K, 120hz & HDR (or 8K, 60HZ & HDR). Why does a PS5 or Series X need a 2.1 cable when the consoles can’t produce all 3 at one? They can do 4K & 120Hz or 4K & HDR or 120Hz & HDR. So surely you only need a 2.0 Cable. What am I missing lol.

I've read that if you have a receiver like the Yamaha RX-V6A that has HDMI 2.1 ports, you can attach multiple devices like a PS5, Xbox Series X, & a high-end PC, and you would still be able to take advantage of the HDMI 2.1 spec features as it passes through your receiver and into your tv. Also, I've read that Sony's X900H will update HDMI ports 3 & 4 to the 2.1 spec with a firmware update.

Your video is really gonna confuse people here. All those 120fps games you listed are 120fps at 1080p on ps5 and xbox series X so you dont need hdmi 2.1. In fact I doubt any AAA game will ever do 120fps 4K on the ps5 or xbox series X, even higher specced PCs have trouble doing 4K 120FPS. HDMI 2.0 will support up to 120fps up to 1440p. It seems like your trying to push those kickback links for TVs here on your article by making gamers worried they are going to be missing out. Saying "if you dont care about 120FPS I wouldn't worry about HDMI 2.1" though is real devious here and downright bending the truth.

Not to mention that if a game DOES manage to hold 120 fps at 4K, it will no doubt involve visual effects compromises (such as no ray tracing). Personally I'd rather have 60 fps 4K with better visual effects than 120 fps 4K, especially since the difference between 60 fps and 120 fps is not worth the quality tradeoff.

2.1 is just future proofing at this point. Unless you are rich you probably aren't going to spend 1000's on a TV that even supports 2.1
2.0 will be fine for several years, hardly any devs will even utilize 2.1 for years to come.
No rush to upgrade, 2.1 benefits will show up midway to late generation.

Oof. A lot of misinformation here. A lot of underselling HDMI 2.0b. Your existing HDMI cable can already carry 4k 60fps, with extra features like hdr, very, and cec. It can also do the same at 120fps at resolutions up to 1440p. The ONLY reason to update to an HDMI 2.1 cable is to display in 8k, or to display in 4k at frame rates above 60fps. Your PS5 and XSX WILL NOT BE POWERFUL ENOUGH to render games in 8k, or in 4k at high frame rates. The only reason I see to plug a next-gen console in using an. HDMI 2.1 cable is to play 8k video content if you have an 8k TV. At least until the next gen, HDMI 2.1 will only really be useful for running games at 4k 120fps from a high-end PC to your TV.

  • @GBeastyB
    @GBeastyB 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Ive always gamed on Monitors! They are going to be so expensive once 2.1hdmi monitors release and lets be honest, we wont have many games on the next gen consoles that will run 4k 120fps. If a game says it will run at 120fps it will probably be at 1440p or 1080p and I will happily take that playing mulitplayer games. 4k 60 isnt even the standard yet. You'll definitly be ok with a tv or monitor with 2.0 hdmi for years to come

I’m seeing that the Nanocell 85 comes with HDMI 2.1 and it cost just $600.

Is there a way to tell which HDMI I have just by looking at it ?

I have an interesting question. I just upgraded my older Samsung tv to an Asus monitor with pretty good specs. Its 43 inches and has a 4k 144hz display with DSC, 10bit color, G-sync and adaptive sync (Free-sync), VRR, HDR1000 with 90% DCI-P3 color gamut. It has 2 HDMI 2.0 ports. However, it does also have 2 high bandwidth display ports 1.4. My question is since next gen consoles dont have display ports, would I be able to benefit from those features if I ran a high bandwidth HDMI to DP cable from Series X into the display port of my monitor? 4k at 144hz with DSC is only possible through display port on this monitor.

@@bxdcardz1166 Yes, lol! It wouldn't work. For that amount of bandwidth, both ends have to be display port. Thankfully, Asus released an upgraded version of the same monitor with HDMI 2.1 which supports a maximum of 4k at 120. I ended up just swapping monitors.

@@NewYorkMetalShows wait so hdmi 2.1 is the only cable you can get 120 hz for hdmi

@@bxdcardz1166 HDMI 2.0 port is limited to 18Gbps which caps 4k at 60hz/fps or 1440p at 120. You can still achieve 1440p 120hz/fps through Hdmi 2.0 on supported displays. Just have to adjust your console settings. HDMI 2.1 port has a limit of 48Gbps which supports 4k at 120 and up to 8k/60. An ultra high speed Hdmi cable is also required.

If you're just playing on a 1440p 144 hz gaming monitor on the xbox series X.. do you really need to upgrade to a monitor that supports 2.1 or no?
