Another beauty Mike, thank you. I have to say, up to now, I have enjoyed watching this video the most. Due, in large part, to the enjoyment you were getting out of making it 🙂 Especially the singing finial. I had to smile listening to it but then laughed out loud when you commented and kept going back to it lol Looking forward to watching another episode tomorrow. Take care and have a great evening 🤗
The box looks terrific. Very well done. I loved the singing finial. Looks very good, but it has sung its last note, sad to say. That burl was kicking your proverbial turning butt. This made me think of a song by a US folk singer/songwriter Dar Williams (female) who wrote a song "Teenagers Kick Our Butts". Not a surprise the glove was needed due to the heat of the shavings. You did good getting the milliput into the narrow cracks. Glad the cracks did not weaken the wood. Getting the lid to fit is a lot of tweaking. I have not turned lidded boxes, but I have done a lot of pepper and salt mills where I wanted the top to be a nice fit in the body. Now and again I take "just one more light cut" and then "Murphy" pays a visit and the fit is too loose. Some nice grain in the oak.
That burl was nasty, I keep buying this interesting wood that has problems but you do tend to get the best pieces from them. I've never heard of Dar Williams or the song but it's certainly poignant on this occasion. The milliput worked great, you can push it into all the nooks easily. I know what you mean about the just one more cut lol. Thanks as always for your comments, talk soon. Mike
@@MikeHolton I’ve been tasked with doing one for our October completion in the novice section so I’m going to use wenge and maybe oak or another of the British Timbers I brought back to Oz with me after my holiday. I saw the one you did with the ebony and other Timbers and think I’lll give that a go. Thanks for all your help. I even learn from your mishaps.
Interesting, it never really occurred to me to leave it as it was, that style of finial is traditionally black. I have a new pot video out on boxing day which does not have a black finial 😀
Hi Mike, all good I hope. Lovely wee box mate, 1rst class 👍. One of your older videos but I'm getting through them. On the lid, ( now, please remember that I'm really green & new at turning) could you not use a short worm screw to hold it whilst turning it & then use the screw hole to take a tenon on the finial ? Keep well & stay safe.
Is your finial your own design? Or is it a replica of something that you have seen? It’s gorgeous the whole project turned out beautifully…btw, love the happy accidents…lol……👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love it! If I had to name this bowl, it would be the Singing Finial!
Haha thanks, and thanks for the pictures
Very nice Burl bowl with lid. Thanks for sharing this video. Jerry D. U.S.A..
Thanks and thanks for watching Jerry ☺️
Enjoying all your videos. Nothing wrong with the old ones. Lots to learn and enjoy. ❤❤
Thanks John, I loved making this one, I gave it to my mother as a present.
Wonderful lidded vessel tutorial. Plenty of flexibility . Thank you, Mike.
Glad you enjoyed it Bob, I've not made one of these for ages, I must do another 😀

@@MikeHolton good morning Mike
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL !!!! Thanks for this tutorial, Mike. I've made tiny parts but never had the need to make a finial.
Glad it was helpful Bill, finials are fun 😀
Mike love the box, the singing finial was amazing great job.
Thanks Shirley, I spent ages playing with that finial, I'm just a big kid at heart lol 😂
Gorgeous. I love the style you created with the finial, and I could stare into that burl grain for hours.
Thank you, yeah it's a bit nice 😀
You are a great problem solver, the box is beautifl.
😊 thank you James
Beautiful bowl. the finish on the finial looks like antique brass.
Thanks Carl, you're right it does. I gave this to my Mum 😀
Beautiful result! I really like the tip about undercutting the inside of the lid to get a clean fit.
Thanks Ted, yes it really helps closing the gap between the lid and the base.
I really enjoyed watching how you got everything to fit together!
Thanks' James 😀
I don't have a lathe yet but I still like watching your videos.
Nothing wrong wit that 😀
Once again very nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent work Mike! Writing this while I’m watching you work! Can already tell it will be another beauty 👍👍👍
Thanks Richard, look out for the singing finial 😂
@@MikeHolton I heard it 🤣🤣👍

Very nice work Mike, learned a lot about box making
Great to hear! they are a lot of fun as long as you do it in the right order 😂

I also done a few lidded bowls or boxes and love the end results. Whats the putty like for food safe items bud.
When it’s dry it’s fine 😁
Another great demo mike only one observation wish you hadn't put the black on the finial

I'm still catching up on your videos, so maybe you already use alcohol inks to colour wood? I just love this box, the finial makes it perfect :)
Hi, don't do much with colour just spirit inks so far. Thanks, I gave this box to my mum 🙂

Hi Jim, you could but you are at risk of it coming off given how deep it would be, it's better and safer doing it this way. All the best, MIke
