LAKE GARDA - ITALIAN DREAM on the shores of LAKE GARDA - the amazing VILLA CALICANTUS!

  • Today’s vlog is a story of following your passion and your dreams.
A few years ago Daniele Delaini was working in a bank. But he gave up finance to lead a different type of life. With his wife Chiara he went back to his ancestral home and vineyard which was in a rundown state. Times were tough at the beginning but step by step they are creating their dream and building up an outstanding organic and biodynamic winery in the heart of Bardolino. This is not a typical vineyard - together they are creating a slice of Italian heaven. Our visit was like stepping into a classic Italian film - with great wine, great food, great conversation and a celebration of being alive.
To experience the wonderful Villa Calicantus or see their shop go to

I was moved to tears literally when he shared the 2011 vintage wine with you and his passionate discussion of what it means to him moved me in such a way that I cannot fully describe in words.
The story about how he brought the family home/ winery back to life and his descriptions of how the vines are grown, the description on the paper with the bottles was educational to me too.
This man exudes character, life, passion, and he followed his heart and dream to give up a banking job for a far better life in this beautiful part of Italy.
Thank you Stephanie and Oliver for taking us with you to this magnificent winery. It was a joy to listen to this man talk with much passion and joy. Breathtaking!!!

Congratulations to Daniele and his wife Chiara for having the courage to go after his dream of creating special wines on his family's property. Not only is he realizing his dreams but honoring the land by restoring it to a vital working vineyard that his family once worked. I wish he and his wife continued success in all their business endeavors. I hope that I can visit this place one day when I tour Italy. Thanks for sharing this beautiful place with us Ollie and Stephanie.

Thank you Stephanie and Ollie for once again taking us on such a wonderful, magical episode to Northern Italy and the simply gorgeous Villa Calicantus on the shores of Lake Garda and introducing us to the owner Daniele Delani, who told us his very moving story of how he had given up working in a bank in France to return to his ancestral home and vineyard, and how, gradually he and his wife are re-establishing and re-creating an exceptional Organic and biodynamic winery in the heart of the Bardolino, Veneto, region. It was so interesting to learn from Daniele about the viniculture and terroir in his vineyards and about the different ages and fermentations in the French oak barrels as well as his explanation of the fermentation in the concrete tanks and steel tanks. In his presentation of the tasting of the Villa Calicantus Bardolino Superiore to Stephanie and Ollie his passion of his wines was tangible and you felt you were also participating! We also appreciate, like yourselves and many people, good wines, and I used to have a wine business called Top Cellars, exclusively marketing and importing Johann Kattus GmBH Hochreigl-Sekt from the only winery in Vienna which was the only one to have been appointed by royal warrant to the Court of Hapsburg. A family member had a winery and vineyard near Certaldo in Tuscany, with the renowned wine ‘Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG. So Viniculture is in my family history too! We therefore agree with you both that you should definitely start a ‘cave’ at LaLande with wine tastings of Daniele’s fabulous wines you purchased, which we feel sure would be a great success with your guests! We look forward to your next episodes and to you returning before long to Villa Calicantus. Love and best wishes Christina and Nick, Crediton, Devon, UK.🙂🍷🍷🥰

The sensibility of Northern Italians is quite a contrast to the south, which are my roots. Fortunately, my appreciation extends to both. Some additional bits to fill in about the ‘biodynamic’ agriculture is that this type of farming was an inspiration of Rudolf Steiner in his quest to come to the true essence of every experience of the 12 senses whether it be in growing foods according to the soil, stars, position of the moon, what the soil needs to help with the ripening of the foods, grapes, ie. The harvest. True food preservation is an art without the artificial ingredients. Steiner made his mark on every aspect of life: architecture, education (Waldorf Schools all around the world), healthy Anthroposophical remedies (like homeopathic remedies), movement and dance, drawing and study of color/art (utilizing lazuring technique for applying color to plastered walls), speech, singing, playing instruments, creating handworks, creating of and use of hand tools, the flow of water (flowforms which cleanse the water without additions)…endless areas. The masterpieces of his works held in Dornach, if you ever care to visit that amazing place, the home of Anthroposophy (the study of man).

Such passion in his continuation of wine making as well as renovating his family home.
I really like the natural way is the best way to grow the grapes, treat the land and produce what are obviously exquisite wines. I doubt anyone would want to return to the cheaper mass produced types, which I find cause me to wheeze, they’re not particularly pleasant and even when drinking only a small glass I always feel slightly ‘poisoned’ later.
I’ve screen shot the name of these wines and wonder if they’re available in the U.K.?
The colour of the building in the sun was dreamy and sets for a slower more relaxed life. This certainly isn’t just a job! I love your videos so much!! Thanks guys 👍🏻🥰🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️

We have a few grape vines and do get grapes in the Fall of year in the Noth east, but I put the grape in my mouth and "Pop it" after putting it in my mouth, Cannot explain just what I mean, but 'pop it' open, inside my month. I think it is more delicious and I can tell, more about if it is ready or not. I am not sure if anyone else does this or not? Have no idea where that idea came from me, but I just feel it helps alot. My grandfather came from Italy and did have grapevines, he had them in Italy and over here. I live in same area as grandpa and grandma did. But to "Pop" it in your mouth, was not taught by grandpa. But I do it anyway, perhaps others do? It really does make it taste so sweet, I feel and if not, it is not ready or too much ready, you can tell.
Very interesting and did learn so much more!! So wonderful to be able to live in same home as your ancestors! Such a great feeling it is to have a home like the one you do and knowing your family was born in the home and grew up there as well.
Oliver and Staphanie are so much fun! Enjoyed this very much! Thank you!
