English philosopher Roger Scruton would agree with you Oli - his whole academic career had been devoted to the philosophy of beauty and the human need for beauty. He is known for advocating for beauty as a human need in architectural design and a arch critic of the loss of beauty in modern urban planning and articulated well that with the rise of dull utilitarian design there is a correlating rise in chronic illnesses. 🤔

@@dr.susanchaudoir8576 thank you so much for your comment. I remember reading some Roger Scruton a few years ago and thank you for the reminder I shall read some more. I wholeheartedly agree. I remember sitting next to a philosopher once at a Ruskin Society meal in London and they said for our schools we should build palaces to inspire the mind not the bland boxes we see so much of nowadays. I wish we would.

Oliver so wonderfully captures the details of the architecture with his careful photography, making sense of what we're seeing, educating our eye, without being pedantic, and Stephanie is us, we are with her as she experiences the architecture for the first time. I felt this so deeply, since, like her, I have not been a fan of art nouveau, but completely agree with her, that the Catalonian interpretation imparts an exuberance, a joyousness, that breathes life into the style. I’ve always thought that the crux of the art nouveau is the exuberance, celebration of craftsmanship and imagination and whimsy in the enduring examples. I think of Art Nouveau illustrators like Maxfield Parish, or Mucha as well as buildings from the time and I feel that they’re incredibly whimsical and joyful. That’s why I’ve always been drawn to the style. This building is such a find. I think I could spend all day in there.

As a Nurse for 35 years, I myself have always wondered and lamented that the children's wards were the most colourful and decorated and thoughtfully designed spaces in any of the hospitals I have ever worked in. Mostly because I worked in ICU and Recovery, these areas, visited very briefly by patients, and usually while unconscious or semi-conscious, are very much utilitarian in design and I would have loved to have worked in spaces designed like that!!

    Oliver, WOW!!! ❤
This was one outstanding video. The artwork breathtaking. Loved to hear about the history..
Now I understand why you made Barcelona your home!! You have your inspiration, right there, close at hand., and seeing this city and your beautiful home, I understand why you bought there ..
I'm so glad you & Stephanie are able to share with each others viewer's to look beyond, even if it's only in their armchair having a cup of tea, they are able to travel, but to step outside their local regions to see history, if possible to travel, meet with friends and or family to make memorable moments, and smell and partake the great food of the local regions.
Life is short - Live your lives without regrets!!
Bravo to you both on your first of many travel vlogs .. 👏
    Can't wait for the next .. 😊

Olly, Thank you for introducing this amazingly gorgeous building. I somehow missed it on my numerous short trips to Barcelona to study Moderniste architecture years ago. It’s on my list now for my next visit! I wish you would recognize Moderniste architecture in its own right rather than likening it to Art Nouveau or British architecture. It is clear that Moderniste architects were seeking to express the Catalan national spirit and identity through these new forms, which were substantially influenced by Ibero-Arabic architectural traditions and forms. Sorry, if I don’t see anything in the literature indicating otherwise and who’s to say the reverse isn’t true? After all, the ancient architectural traditions existed for millennia throughout the Mediterranean.

THank you so much for taking us with on this breathtaking tour. My grandparents toured extensively and shared their memories with us. My oupa would LOVE the theatre building and hospital. His dream was to be able to sit for a day, just looking at one side. Then a day looking at the other side. The hospital totally blew my socks off. Such beauty for a a utalitarian building.

WE so enjoyed joining you both on this wonderful and very interesting (sometimes moving in the hospital!) day in Barcelona. The fountain in the park was magnificent with Gaudi being involved in it and others and I really liked it Ollie when you said it was inspired by the Trevi Fountain in Rome (which I have seen a number of times)because it was commissioned by one of my Italian (side of my family's ancestors - Pope Clement XII in 1730 to replace a previous fountain that had stood in the same location since the 15th century. The design for the new fountain was the result of a competition that was won by Nicola Salvi, who was then a relatively unknown architect!) So many congratulations on the exciting beginning to your travels and we look forward to seeing ,many more on your new Channel. Best wishes Christina and Nick, Crediton, Devon UK.🙂👋

I'm so late to this exciting premiere party after a hectic day and it's now 2 a.m. so unfortunately I've only just begun to soak up the magic of this amazing journey and will continue viewing tomorrow. It's already clear that after eighteen minutes of the video I will be watching it over and over again to try and take in all the incredible beauty that is Barcelona. Thank you both.

WOW WOW WOW. I have waited for this channel with bated breath but my breath has been taken away. What an amazing tour. I cannot choose which one was my favourite building or water feature but Stephanie chasing bubbles will stay with me. Thank you Oliver for all your information, it was amazing. I also really like the subtitles written on the screen for you to see, that way you can pause it and look it up and learn about it yourself. I am truly amazed and cannot wait for the next one! Love from Oz. xxx

Having been in Barcelona for a Creativity Workshop some time ago, of course I saw Gaudi's wonderful creations. But now I have to wonder why we were not steered in the direction of the fantastic Lluis Domenech Montaner! What amazing architecture he created! I am wondering why that was not kept as a hospital. I have long thought that hospitals need healing artistic work, and have wondered why they don't seem to understand that. Thank you for taking us along on this wonderful tour in Barcelona! (I just looked up more info and now understand why the buildings could not be used for a modern hospital.)

Thank you both so much; Stephanie - when you first mentioned this collaboration,I must admit I wanted them straight away. Through my eye the melding of Neo Gothic , Islamic , as well as naturalism of Gaudi’s contemporary architect is truly amazing ,inspiring and emotional on many levels. Oliver , ever thought of doing podcast’s to educate us with your joy. With gratitude,Dyrek.

That concert hall! Why have I never heard of this architect?! It is an amazing and wonderful building! A lot of the buildings, especially those at and around 26:17, look quite Indian-Moghul to my untutored eye! Wonderful! I would love Barcelona! Thank you so much for another video! Your subscriber count was under 900 when I signed up. Over ten times that now! Brilliant! Stephanie, perhaps you could create a Barcelona-style ceiling somewhere at Lalande? Maybe commissioning it from a favourite artisit? Thank you for the video!
