@Michael Zhu Actually I once saw Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock duet and it was in a large auditorium and I could hardly hear anything.
@Michael Zhu I would have heard his brilliance had I been there; even at a lower volume. There’s a live recording on TH-cam of Bill Evans Trio on ‘I Loves You Porgy’ that is still amazing, despite background noise, chattering crowd. There are other better recordings of that, but this one’s worth hearing for the trio synergy, despite a small distracting group among the fans.
Most likely the reason Chick Corea was not paying attention to Bill Evans, the first time he heard Bill, and was paying attention to drummer Jimmy Cobb, (as Chick mentions) was the fact that Chick started out as a drummer. Eventually, he morphed into a piano player. Chick's syncopated and percussive piano style hugely reflected his roots as a drummer.
That's because Chick was already playing out and was building a career already and starting to move on up in the scene. He had better things to think about than to ogle and admire a fellow jazz pianist, who, btw had a huge fucking monkey on his back. I guess Chick wasn't feeling that shit either. Everyone knew... In any case, Chick was there to listen to the horn players only and not give a shyte about pianists. I totally, 100% get this vibe. The ones who slam his Chick 'comment' (if you can call it that), probably don't play and don't understand what's up with this. I woulda done the same thing. Just listen to the horn players and later for the pianist especially if I'm not feeling him.
As a piano player you would imagine Chick would at least check out Bill’s solos! Madness. Maybe the acoustics were bad

It's amazing that Bill Evans gets so little attention. He was my father's favorite. It took me many years, but I figured it all out eventually. He also liked Hampton Hawes, another underappreciated pianist.

He gets backlash for some reason, with other jazz musicians calling his style fake, or just classical music mixed with jazz. What I like about Bill is that he didn't had a lot of talent for jazz, but he worked hard to earn his skills, much like Ryo Fukui
@@TaichiStraightlife I wish that was true, but the first names that come up in any conversation about piano jazz are always guys like Oscar, Art, Chick, etc. All great players, no doubt. Bill was kind of under the radar except for the people in the know. Oh well, it is what it is. Whenever anybody asks me who my favorite jazz pianist is, there's only three, and Bill is one of them.
I think people are a bit confused here about whether Chick liked or respected Bill, or not. In Chick´s very well known video of jazz piano history, made about 30Y ago and on youtube, in the Bill Evans segment he says "probably the most influential pianist of the 60s" and is deeply complimentary about him.
I’ve got a couple kids and they aren't into jazz. But I played Evans for them, and they say, 'Jesus, that's pretty good.' So I think it's interesting that people are just rediscovering Bill Evans, and I want people to rediscover Bill Evans. I think he's a great American artist, and I think more people should listen to him and respect the beauty that he was able to create.

Excellent story of how our brain is affected by our prejudices. Reminds me of how awful I though Bill Bruford (different genre) was because he had a ringing in his snare drum sound. My music teacher taught us to tune or muffle the ringing out of the snare (proper, so I thought). Years later Bruford became my favorite drummer and I couldn't get enough of his ringy snare drum sound! We live, learn and hopefully grow.
I have a very vivid memory of not only not noticing but actually never attending a performance by John Coltrane...

I think Chick was about to go on and speak of the NEXT time he heard Evans. I mean let's face it, if you're sitting in front of Coltrane and Miles and Cannonball in 1959 (super-humans, as described by Evans years later), piano solos, on what was probably an underwhelming, undermic-ed piano, might seem like an afterthought, especially if it was someone who played as different sounding (at the time) as Evans did. This video is incomplete, and in no way do I think Chick was dissing Bill Evans, someone he clearly revered. Please post the rest of what he had to say!

Saw Chick 7 times. Couldn't get enough. The last time, he walked in the small crowd , he shook our hands. I loved his playing because of Evans. No, they didn't play alike , but both were sublime. I do miss the excitement of going to see such a gifted individual play. The first time I saw him was 76.

However the electric bands, man i love concert vid where you're in a 90s microsoft like shirt and pattitucci is in purple scrubs! There music is out of this world! Chick played in St Rose drum and bugle corps from Chelsea MA. I've never heard what he played.

Chick is wrongly accused here. at no time did he say "i have a great Bill Evans story to tell you." Chick Corea has more important things to do than label youtube videos.
i wish there had been more, but it's still interesting to realize that a great artist like Chick expressed the same wonderment that i felt when first seeing Miles & Co.

interesting to hear that WYnton Kelly was one of his heroes - Kelly is a most amazing piano player - one of my favourites and his work on Freddie Freeloader (the only song he does on kind of blue) is the best thing on the album

Not much of a memory Chick , you said nothing interesting about Bill here. In contrast to that bland reference to the great Bill Evans, who has since his death been recognised as an icon of cool piano playing, I have a short story here for the viewers of this piece.
In 1969 I was working as a guitarist in bands around the centre of London, and after gigs on Saturday nights, would usually walk along to Ronnie Scotts club, to see who was playing, and on this particular night, the gig was cancelled, so my friend an alto player , and myself went into Ronnies for the whole show which began at 9.00pm. Ronnie was a great player, and treated fello musicians with great courtesy, and on that night he put us on the table which was about six feet behind and to one side of the piano stool. He then introduced Marty Mardell , Eddie Gomez, and Bill Evans, and we sat for six hours which was three sets of one hour each listening to the trio, and at times joining in the conversation between them, for example: Bill went into an intro, without telling the band that he was going to play " Someday My Prince " and after the piece had been played with solos from all three musicians, an lady in the audience shouted out to Bill: " What was that tune ?" and bill told her, which led to a discussion between ourselves, Bill, the band, about the Disney Movie which featured to song, Snow White and the seven Dwarves . What a night that was, we saw everything that Bill do do, and he occasionally turned round to me and my alto playing friends to half smile whilst he was in mid solo, with Ronnie cracking jokes here and there, the night , one of hundreds of nights in Scotts for us, was unforgettable. Eddie Gomez's playing inspired me to ditch the guitar, and take up contrabass, which changed my life in music forever. Gone but never forgotten, BIll Evans could be one of the most important icons from that era.

My father saw that quintet a little before in 58 I think at a place in Hollywood called Jazz City. My father and a guy named Cy Johnson who became Mingus' arranger later on, were equally disappointed that Rollins was not there and this guy named Coltrane was in his place. Wynton was there along with Philly Joe, and Chambers. They parked themselves upfront every night like Chick for what I think was a week long residency. No cover and a 2 drink minimum. Can you imagine seeing what is considered the best quintet in jazz history for just buying a couple drinks? I wish I could post some of the photographs that Cy took.

So now I know not to send this to someone I know who's still in denial about Bill Evans's greatness. I can understand Chick's initial expectation, but he didn't add how he might have changed upon first hearing Bill Evans.
Exactly. The way he described Bill and didn't even call him by name seemed a little bitter especially since he named everyone else.
He recorded a tribute album to Bill Evans. His story is clearly recounting a time when he didn't know who Bill Evans was, hence not mentioning his name. Chick Corea was influenced by Bill Evans. He has been very open about this.

I was a bass player and in 1974 or so went to see Dave Holland with Pat Metheny. Dave didn't show and there was a substitute no one had heard of. Damn. What a disappointment.

Chick Corea has lauded Bill Evans throughout his career, spoken of his influence and even recorded a tribute album of sorts, recording many of BE's compositions. There is nothing to see here.

@@DZ-ky1fe hey. When I wrote this comment I was kinda mad hahah but I've read quite the handful of articles criticizing his swing feel and melodic language. You also notice that many of the greats don't mention him a lot. There's this awful interview with Metheny and Mehldau where they're compared to Evans and Hall and Mehldau basically shits on people comparing him to Evans. He refers to him as "that guy" -- very deliberately disrespectful. The moment that hurt the most, though, was listening to Barry Harris blabbering on about Bill: "I don't even wanna hear Bill Evans' name. I know a cat [...], everything in his was car Bill Evans. Bill Evans, Bill Evans, Bill Evans... I said: 'Lord, have mercy. Jesus, save me.' Get outta here! I don't know why [...] all of a sudden he's the greatest thing. That's bull! If you listen to Bud Powell, you can see it. Bill Evans ain't got nothing to do with it." It was funny, but sad. I wasn't expecting it.
@@MrCaiomedeiros Barry Harris said Kind of Blue wasn't jazz, you've got to take comments from other people in the world, even great people in a field you're into, with context. Barry was dogmatic about bebop. Which you could definitely argue, is the greatest art movement within jazz's history. But of course, follow your bliss, find the music that draws you toward a love of life the most. Evans was a genius of music without a doubt.

Faulty memory, Chick, RIP. You didn't see Bill Evans with the Miles Davis Sextet in 1959. Bill Evans left the Miles Davis Sextet in November, 1958. He went to Florida to see his parents, and he went to Louisiana to visit his brother Harry. He was pretty burned out, as this was the beginning of his heroin use. He also didn't have the strong will to ignore the racism that he received from the band's black followers in clubs, who were angered that Miles would replace Red Garland, a charismatic pianist popular with the crowd, with a white pianist. Miles referred to this situation as "Crow Jim". Miles was always pretty creative. Yes, Bill Evans returned for the recording of Kind of Blue; how could Miles dream of such an album without Evans, whose playing was so integral to the modal sound that Miles was exploring.
He backtracked in the middle of the clip and said he saw them at storyville while he was in high school (so at least before 1959)

When you've lived 79 of them yourself like Chick did, you might recall a range within a year or two or more of an event that happened 60+ years ago. But Paul, you are propagating or inflating the racism part. Listen to Ross Porter's interview with Bill. Yes, at times it wasn't easy for Bill, but he is steadfastly upbeat about his tenure with what he called the best band of all time.

What kind of lame-ass story is this? Besides your bumbling around, stops/starts, etc., Evans was one of the greatest, most influential jazz pianists of his time and certainly one of my favourites along with so many others who'v posted here.
