BILL EVANS (It's not easy being green) Jazz History #58

- Despite a life beset by personal struggles and tragedy, Bill Evans created music that altered trajectories and set new standards, and which sounds as fresh and rich today as it did in the mid-20th century. Sharply intellectual, virtuosic and introspective, with his head bowed close to the keyboard, Bill Evans embodied the music that flowed from his fingers. Jazz would not be the same without his magnificent contributions to the idiom.
ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course in jazz history. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s. You’ll find a lot more videos like this one in the JAZZ HISTORY playlist on this channel.
Here's the runaway favorite, ironically about one of the least well known artists in the whole series, which I subtitled 'The greatest pianist you never heard'.

Thank You for this wonderful tribute to Mr. Bill Evans 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing this. I don't know much about jazz history, I only know when I hear something special.
Having only the lowest understanding of music theory, that clip at the end where he's trying to explain the progression during the taping is anxiety inducing.
I still don't understand what he was getting at, but the drummer's playing clearly shows something clicked. Breath taking.
Don't feel too bad. Not many of us would have wanted to be in Alex Riel's (drummer) shoes on that taping. If you are new to jazz history, there are 65 episodes here for you to explore. You are bound hear some other special things!
@chasesanborn Man, he really put him on the spot. Thanks!
These are some of my favorite TH-cam videos ever! Please keep it up!
Thanks for saying so!
Finally getting into Part 2. Thank you. This is top notch. Well done and thank you again. I'm a jazz neophyte but I feel smarter watching these. The Jazz effect.
I'm glad you are enjoying the episodes and I appreciate you saying so!
It's like being back on the third floor at U of T watching this and hearing your voice Chase!! Love it!!
So much for the idea that I hired Morgan Freeman to do the voiceover...:)
Thank you for these 2 videos about Bill Evans. Can't wait to watch those about Coltrane, too 🍻
Glad you enjoyed them. There are lots more to explore!
Excellent 2-part documentary. As a big fan of Bill, this is arguably the best one.
Thanks for that--I'm glad you think so.
I find Evans to have had an enormously romantic streak (which I adore) Emily (a marvelous song to begin with) is a clear example. So lovely. This is, personaly, my favorite trio ensemble. What voicings!
Indeed.
These are excellent documentaries. Thank you!
Thanks for saying so!
Yes indeed -- they stand apart. I think it's because they're made by a career musician who is also a dedicated educator and excellent communicator. The 'subject' is always the main focus ( not the writer / narrator / story teller), and the music is allowed to speak for itself. Really top flight work!
I appreciate that from both of you. I get the occasional comment taking issue with the narrator's style or perceived bias, but such is the nature of social media. When dissenting viewpoints are posted respectfully, I'm happy to engage in the same spirit. When they are caustic or accusatory, the poster is banned. It's nice that TH-cam provides that opportunity.
Thanks so much
You're welcome!
Great channel! Never saw the film from 8:25... thanks!
Thanks for that!
This Channel is awesome!
Thanks for that!
"Bill was always a prolific composer". How many tunes/songs did Bill Evans compose? How does this compare with the number of tunes/songs that Monk composed? Or Ellington?
Perhaps we can just say that Bill Evans wrote some great tunes.
Nothing really special here...if you're a fan of Mr. Evans, all this footage can be found in it's entirety on various TH-cam videos.
That's pretty much true for all the videos in this series. I curate the clips and and add contextual information about the artist. Because I do not own the copyrights to the clips, any revenue from this series goes to the copyright holders, as it should. It costs a viewer nothing to watch and I get nothing in return except the satisfaction of sharing music I love.
Downvoted his unnecessary comment and upvoted your gracious response.
I appreciate that.
Nothing special?? You could say the same about your comment, as all the words can be found in a dictionary. This kind of attitude is atrocious.
